A method for containing potentially infectious devices. The potentially infectious devices are deposited is a container to which is added an MDI-based urethane prepolymer-containing composition to at least partially envelope the potentially infectious devices. The prepolymer containing composition is caused to harden through polymerization to immobilize the devices, and to act as a sterilizing or disinfectant agent due in large part to the exothermic nature of the reaction.

Point-of-use infectious waste disposal system

A method of and apparatus for crushing cans, such as aluminum cans, for facilitated further handling. The apparatus is adapted for crushing the can longitudinally to a partially crushed configuration defined by a collapsed cylindrical sidewall, a bottom wall extending substantially perpendicularly to the axis of the sidewall, and a top wall extending at an acute angle to the axis. The apparatus is further arranged to permit manipulating the partially crushed can to a different disposition wherein the partially crushed can is crushed to a final configuration defined by a further collapsed cylindrical sidewall thereof, a bottom wall extending substantially perpendicularly to the axis of the further collapsed sidewall, and a top wall reversely repositioned at a displacement angle to the original acute angle of the partially crushed can. In the illustrated embodiment, the displacement angle is at least equal to the acute angle so that the top wall is reversely repositioned from the original acute angle of the partially crushed can to at least a disposition perpendicular to the axis. In the illustrated embodiment, the apparatus includes a base and a lever pivotally interconnected for manipulation of a handle portion of the lever in effecting the above described crushing operation. The base is provided with a recess for effectively retaining the can during the partial crushing operation. The lever is provided with an annular recess for effective engagement with the top wall of the can in effecting the partial crushing operation.

Can crushing apparatus

A method for determining the precise position of the drill bit, in three dimensions, in the earth during a drilling operation, with a minimum of effort and interruption to the drilling process. It provides placing a motion sensor on the drilling apparatus and a plurality of vibration sensors or geophones, positioned in a two-dimension array on the surface of the earth, above the expected position of the drill bit. To make a measurement from which can be determined the position of the bit, the drill stem is raised a selected distance and suddenly released, so that it will fall in the borehole, and the bit will strike the bottom of the hole. This impact will cause an elastic wave to be generated at the bottom of the borehole. The elastic wave will be transmitted through the earth and will be detected by the geophones. The sensor provides information from which can be determined the time when the bit strikes the bottom of the drill hole. This determines the initiation time of the elastic wave. The arrival times at the geophones of the elastic wave can be measured and the position at which the elastic wave originated can be determined. Alternative embodiments involve the use of jars in the drill string which generate secondary elastic waves. Also when the pipe is lifted and the bit is lifted off bottom, an expansion elastic wave will be initiated.

Continuous bit positioning system

A method for determining the precise position of the drill bit on the bottom of a long drill string in a deep borehole in the earth during a drilling operation, with a minimum of effort and interruption of the drilling process. It provides placing a plurality of geophones in an array on the surface of the earth above the expected position of the drill bit. A frangible object is inserted into the drill pipe near the surface whereby the mud stream will carry it down through the pipe to the bit where it will close off the mud flow through the bit. The mud pressure above the object will increase and when it reaches a high enough value the object will shatter and there will be a sudden flow of mud through the openings of the bit in the form of a shock wave, which will generate a seismic wave in the earth at the location of the bit. The expanding seismic wave will be detected by the geophones at the surface from which the times of arrival at the various geophones can be determined. The time of initiation of the shock wave can be determined from which the travel times of the seismic wave can be determined and, therefore, the position of the bit with respect to the geophones can be determined.

Seismic method for determining the position of the bit on a drill stem

A method and apparatus for determining the position of the bottom end of a long pipe in a deep water-filled borehole, comprising generating a shock wave in the water at the surface end of the pipe, timing the travel of the shock wave down the pipe to the bottom end thereof, where the shock wave will pass into the liquid in the borehole, generating an expanding seismic wave in the earth. Setting out a plurality of geophones on the earth at the surface to detect the arrival of the seismic wave. Recording the geophone signals and determining the arrival times of the seismic wave. Determining the travel times of the seismic wave to each geophone and determining the position of the end of the pipe.

Seismic method for determining the position of the bottom of a long pipe

Method and apparatus for logging the position of a deep borehole filled with liquid in the earth, comprising a long, continuous small diameter pipe adapted to be reeled up on a drum mounted on a vehicle, and means to insert the end of the pipe into the mouth of a borehole and to lower it to any desired depth in the earth. A plurality of geophones are positioned on the surface of the earth in the vicinity of the borehole with conventional amplifying and recording means connected thereto. Means are provided on the vehicle for compressing a liquid or gas, and injecting it into the pipe. On the bottom end of the pipe is a chamber in which this pressurized fluid can be stored. Fast acting valve means are provided which on signal can suddenly open and permit the stored fluid in the chamber to explosively expand into the liquid in the annulus of the borehole. Such explosive injection of the fluid from the chamber into the well will cause a seismic wave to be generated which will expand until it reaches the surface and is detected and recorded by the geophones. Electrical control wires may be carried in the pipe means by which the valve can be timed and controlled, so that the travel times of the seismic wave from the chamber to the geophones can be determined, from which the position of the borehole at the depth of the chamber can be determined.
