A method for producing a diffusion cooling hole extending between a wall having a first wall surface and a second wall surface includes forming a cooling hole inlet at the first wall surface, forming a cooling hole outlet at the second wall surface, forming a metering section downstream from the inlet and forming a multi-lobed diffusing section between the metering section and the outlet. The inlet, outlet, metering section and multi-lobed diffusing section are formed by laser drilling, particle beam machining, fluid jet guided laser machining, mechanical machining, masking and combinations thereof.

Manufacturing methods for multi-lobed cooling holes

A system includes a laser-line imaging subsystem to measure a feature. The laser-line imaging subsystem includes a laser to project a laser-line, and a digital video camera mounted at an angle with respect to an axis of said laser to obtain an optical image of the laser-line. A control subsystem is operable to compute three-dimensional coordinate points via triangulation of an intersection between the laser-line and the optical image of the laser-line, the three-dimensional coordinate points data used by the control subsystem to calculate predictive airflow through the workpiece with respect to the volume of the machined holes.

An exemplary component manufacturing method includes scanning a first surface of a component to determine a location of pocket surfaces of the first surface. The method machines apertures in the component from a second, opposite surface of the component. The apertures each have a cooling air inlet within one of the pocket surfaces and a cooling air outlet within the first surface.

Turbomachine component machining method

A system comprises a working laser beam, a sensing laser beam, first and second optical elements, an optical sensor, an aperture and a controller. The first optical element generates a coaxial beam from the working laser beam and the sensing laser beam. The second optical element focuses the coaxial beam onto a workpiece, such that the working laser beam machines the workpiece and the sensing laser beam reflects from the workpiece. The optical sensor senses an intensity of the reflected sensing beam. The aperture determines a focus position by translating along the reflected sensing beam, such that the reflected intensity is maximized. The controller determining a machining parameter of the working laser beam, based on the focus position.
