An apparatus and technique for measuring and coping with interfering signals in a wireless communications system. The apparatus and technique rapidly and regularly measures the signals present in the wireless communication system's band of operation. The apparatus and technique then makes this information available to all the transceivers on the network, so that each transceiver has information the interference other transceivers see, and the system can make intelligent decisions about radio transmission parameters to optimize the network performance.

System and apparatus for detecting interference in radio bands

There is an apparatus and technique for generating a sequence of modulated waveforms of finite duration in which the difference in start time of each waveform is shorter than the waveform's overall duration and each waveform in the sequence has independent data modulation imparted upon it. The apparatus consists of a bank of memory cells arranged in an N&#xd7;M configuration with associated control circuitry, along with an arrangement scheme for the data in the N&#xd7;M memory cells such that the waveforms will be correctly reproduced when the memory cells are addressed by the control circuitry in the prescribed order.

Signal generator and method

An apparatus to facilitate wireless communication where one side of the link is designed for ultra-low power consumption. The apparatus comprises two types of transceivers: a full function transceiver (called the 'Controller') and a reduced function transceiver (called the 'Terminal'), which are normally connected in a &#x201c;star&#x201d; network configuration (i.e. several Terminals communicating with one Controller). The Controller communicates with Terminals directly using chirp signals which contain the modulated data to be transmitted. The Terminal communicates with the Controller by re-transmitting &#x201c;carrier&#x201d; chirp signals which have been sent to it by the Controller. In this way the Terminal does not generate any of its own RF signals, thereby reducing its power consumption. The Terminals may not communicate directly with each other, only indirectly through the Controller.

Wireless communication system

This invention modulates data onto a radio channel in such a way that the deleterious effects of the channel are reduced. This is accomplished in three steps: first, the information signal is modulated using a phase-differential modulation scheme. Second, the modulated signal is spread in both time and frequency by passing it through a dispersive filter, transmitting it through the channel, and removing the spreading using a dispersive filter in the receiver with the opposite characteristics of the filter in the transmitter. The third step, after demodulation, is to pass the signal through a low-pass filter to gather up the signal energy which has been dispersed by the channel. All three of these steps can be implemented with simple functional blocks, making this system very inexpensive to implement. Also included are two methods for enhancing the data throughput of the basic system, making it more bandwidth efficient.
