A grapple device is secured to a mill to allow relative rotation between them. The grapple has an outward bias to allow it to grip the packer bore or an extension from the packer. The mandrel has a wedge adjacent its lower end and torque fingers that fit between grapple segments when relative longitudinal movement occurs between the mandrel and the grapple assembly. The grapple assembly has a left hand thread so that it comes out of the packer if the mandrel engages the grapple assembly in a manner for tandem rotation. The torque fingers on the wedge on the mandrel support the grapple fingers over their length as rotation to the right removes the grapple assembly from the packer bore. Reverse circulation takes away the cuttings into the mill bore where they are separated from the reverse circulating fluid.

The debris collection device operates on an eductor principle with motive fluid delivered from the surface into an eductor housing inlet. The eductor outlet goes into a surrounding annular space and splits with some flow going to the mill below to direct cuttings into the passage in the housing. The cuttings remain in the housing and the flow continues through a screen in the housing passage before reaching the eductor inlet. An auxiliary inlet is normally closed and opened with a reduced flow entering through the mill. The opening of the auxiliary inlet drops the surface pressure delivered to the eductor to act as a surface signal that a plugged or low debris laden inlet flow exists.

Multiple section mills are run in a single trip with an intervening mill preferably a watermelon mill to grind up any cuttings that get past the first mill in a direction toward the second mill below it. The blades of the second mill are held by the innermost tubular until the location of the initial cut is reached at which point the longer arms of the second mill can be extended and its body centralizes due to the flexibility of the connection between the mills.

An anchor system including a housing having a radial opening therein. A piston disposed within the housing and translatable therein. A slip in operable communication with the piston such that translation of the piston axially of the housing causes movement of the slip radially of the housing. The slip having a contact face that is nonparallel to an axis of the housing and nonparallel to a surface against which the slip is configured to be set. A method for anchoring a tool is included.

A disconnect device comprises a tubular member having a window for receiving an engagement member, and a sleeve having connected and disconnected positions. The engagement member engages with a component of a downhole string to connect the disconnect device to the rest of the string such as through a helically-shaped thread disposed on the engagement member and on the component. The window can comprise at least one wall that is outwardly tapered so as to prevent the engagement member from passing through the window when the tubular member is disconnected from the component of the string. The engagement member is maintained within the window by the sleeve when in its connected position to maintain the connection between the tubular member and the component. When moved to its disconnected position, the engagement member disengages the component by moving inwardly into the bore of the tubular member.

Disconnect devices for downhole strings

A debris removal device features structural support from an exterior housing that allows more space for debris collection. The debris enters the collection volume from the top to eliminate debris from having to go through a valve. The screen in the device is disposed internally to protect it during handling and running. A variety of external flow diverters are used to direct debris laden fluid into the tool and to keep debris out of an annular space around the tool that could interfere with its removal. The diverters can be actuated by relative movement in the tool or applied pressure to a piston which can inflate a sleeve or orient or misalign paths through brushes for selective bypassing of fluid exterior to the tool.

Downhole material retention apparatus

A debris catcher uses induced circulation from a venturi to urge debris laden flow into the lower end of a housing. An inlet tube maintains velocity so as to keep the debris moving with the fluid stream as it goes up the inlet tube. A screen fits over the open end of the inlet tube and runs down around the inlet tube toward the entrance of the debris laden fluid into the lower end of the housing. There is a clearance around the cylindrical portion of the screen so some flow can exit that way. There is also an open exit through the top of the screen that can be reached after the fluid stream makes two hairpin turns. Many modules can be stacked. Each module has a large screen area for flow to exit and progressive modules can have smaller screen openings in an uphole flow direction.

A jet bushing for a wellbore cleanup tool features a jet looking uphole to reduce turbulence at the outlet ports that look downhole to accommodate the recirculation flow around the tool that captures the cuttings. The uphole oriented port keeps the pumped fluid downhole from having to make a u-turn to get back uphole and reduces turbulence to allow a higher recirculation flow at the tool to pick up and capture cuttings within the tool.

A debris catching device for downhole milling features modular debris receptacles that are held in the housing in a manner that facilitates stacking and a generally undulating flow path to facilitate dropping of the debris into the receptacles as the remaining fluid travels up the tool for ultimate screening before the fluid exits the tool to flow up to the surface or in a reverse circulation pattern back to the mill below the debris catcher. The modules can also be aligned with flapper valves at the top of each module to prevent debris in the tool from falling to the mill if circulation is turned off. The mill is configured to have an off-center return path preferably as large as the passage through the mill body to aid circulation and cutting performance.

Milling in casing that is over 4&#xbd; inches is done with coiled tubing that is anchored against torque reaction. An improved debris catcher is part of the bottom hole assembly to capture cuttings from the milling. A thruster can be used to maintain weight on the mill during the milling. The coiled tubing supports a mud motor to drive the mill. Return fluid is separated from the cuttings and returned to the surface.

A flow sensor is incorporated into a junk basket to sense a flow stoppage due to a plugged screen or plugged cuttings ports in a mill. The sensor triggers a signal to the surface to warn personnel that a problem exists before the equipment is damaged. The sensor signal to the surface can take a variety of forms including mud pulses, a detectable pressure buildup at the surface, electromagnetic energy, electrical signal on hard wire or radio signals in a wifi system to name a few options. Surface personnel can interrupt the signal to take corrective action that generally involves pulling out of the hole or reverse circulating to try to clear the screen or mill cuttings inlets. Other variables can be measured such as the volume or weight or rate of change of either and a signal can be sent to the surface corresponding to one of those variables to allow them to be detected at the surface in near real time.

A one trip system for expanding a tubular that is solid or perforated or a screen comprises a downhole assembly that features a hydraulic anchor that can be set, released and repositioned to repeat the process. The anchor is small enough to go through the tubular or screen after initial expansion. The anchor's maximum extension is designed to avoid overstressing the already expanded tubular or screen. An expansion tool is hydraulically driven with the initial portion of the stroke delivering an enhanced force. The expansion tool initially supports the tubular or liner but subsequently releases during the first stroke, after the tubular or screen is fully supported.

Method and apparatus for one trip tubular expansion

A ball release mechanism is mounted near the intended seat. The ball or balls are kept out of the circulating stream. High circulation rates followed by curtailment of circulation places an outlet port in position to allow the ball or balls to be pushed out by a spring. The spring or one of the balls prevents the return of an ejected ball back into the protected pocket. The ball is delivered to the seat without circulation.

Downhole ball dropping apparatus

A method of streamlining expansion of long lengths of tubulars or screen is disclosed. In one embodiment, the expansion assembly is coupled with a length of pipe that acts as a weight and has a length longer than the anticipated section to be expanded. There is a stinger that fits into the pipe above the anchor and a seal to maintain sealing contact despite the downhole advance of the expansion assembly following each stroke of the expansion device and advance of a swage. By sequentially applying and removing pressure, the desired length is expanded downhole. Alternatively, coiled tubing is connected to the expansion assembly and weights that are above it and is paid out into the well as the expansion assembly descends after each stroke.
