There is provided a gap sub-assembly for electrically isolating an upstream portion of a drill string from a downstream portion of the drill string. The gap sub-assembly includes a first sub; a second sub; and a non-conductive isolation between the first sub and the second sub, the non-conductive isolation being interposed between respective shoulders of the first sub and the second sub and being interposed between respective threads of a male end of the first sub and a female end of the second sub, the non-conductive isolation comprising an insulative wrapping between at least the respective threads of the first and second subs, wherein connecting the female end of the second sub to the male end of the first sub over the insulative wrapping electrically isolates the respective threads of the first and second subs. A method for assembling such a gap sub-assembly is also provided.

Gap sub assembly for a downhole telemetry system

A system and method are provided for operating a dual telemetry measurement while drilling (MWD) system. The method includes sending a downlink command to a downhole system to switch between a first telemetry mode and a second telemetry mode, one of the first and second telemetry modes comprising mud pulse telemetry, and the other of the first and second telemetry modes comprising electromagnetic (EM) telemetry.

System and method for controlling a dual telemetry measurement while drilling (MWD) tool

A receiver for a dual telemetry measurement while drilling (MWD) system and method for operating same are provided. The receiver includes a mud pulse receiver module for receiving a first signal sent using mud pulse telemetry via a pressure transducer configured to detect mud pulses transmitted through a mud column in a drill string; an electromagnetic (EM) receiver module for receiving a second signal sent using EM telemetry via the drill string and a formation; and a processer for obtaining the first signal when operating in a mud pulse mode and the second signal when operating in an EM mode and having MWD data displayed at a surface system.

Dual telemetry receiver for a measurement while drilling (MWD) system

A system and method are provided for determining borehole azimuth. The method comprises receiving a first set of data from a first sensor module, the first sensor module comprising a first plurality of accelerometers; receiving a second set of data from a second sensor module, the second sensor module comprising a second plurality of accelerometers, the second sensor module being positioned further downhole than the first sensor module; determining a first set of gravity components using the first set of data and a second set of gravity components using the second set of data; determining a bend angle and a tilt angle using the first and second sets of gravity components; determining a change in azimuth using the bend and tilt angles; and providing an output indicative of the change in azimuth. The system and method may also use a crustal gravity vector to correct the computed azimuth.

System and method for determining a borehole azimuth using gravity in-field referencing

A system and method are provided for providing electromagnetic (EM) measurement-while-drilling (MWD) telemetry capabilities using an existing mud-pulse MWD tool. An EM tool intercepts the output from the mud-pulse tool and generates an EM signal that mimics a mud-pulse pressure signal. The EM signal is intercepted at the surface by a receiver module that conditions the signal and inputs the signal into the existing pulse tool receiver. Since the EM signal mimics a mud-pulse signal, the pulse tool receiver does not require software or hardware modifications in order to process an EM telemetry mode. The EM tool can be adapted to also provide dual telemetry by incorporating a conventional pressure pulser that would normally be used with the pulse tool.

System and method for downhole telemetry

An adjustable housing assembly is provided, which includes a splined housing and an adjusting ring which contain a splined mandrel. The splined mandrel is moveable axially within the housing assembly when disengaged from upstream and downstream portions of a drill string to disengage the mandrel from the splined housing. The splined mandrel is rotatable with the adjusting ring to alter angled interfaces between the components to change the bend angle in the housing.
