Hybrid turbine airfoil components containing a ceramic material, in which detailed features of the components are formed of materials other than ceramic materials. The components include a first component formed of a ceramic-based material and a second component formed of a metallic material. The first component comprises an airfoil portion and a nub, and the second component is separately formed and attached to the first component by casting the metallic material around the nub of the first component. The second component includes a platform portion between the airfoil portion and the nub of the first component and a dovetail portion on the nub of the first component. Each of the platform and dovetail portions has at least one off-axis geometric feature that results in the second component having a more complex geometry than the first component.

Turbine airfoil components containing ceramic-based materials and processes therefor

A ceramic shroud assembly includes a tip shroud having an outer platform supporting at least one seal tooth, a shroud cap less brittle than the outer platform and including a shroud cap base on the outer platform, and clockwise and counter-clockwise facing clockwise and counter-clockwise contact surfaces located at clockwise and counter-clockwise distal ends respectively of the base. A rotor assembly may include a circumferential row of turbine blades made of a ceramic material and extending radially outwardly from a disk of a turbine rotor. The turbine blades include airfoils having the airfoil tip shrouds and the shroud caps at blade tips. The clockwise and counter-clockwise contact surfaces of circumferentially adjacent ones of the shroud caps contact each other. The shroud and the platform may be made of a ceramic or ceramic matrix composite material and the shroud cap may be made of a metallic material.

Hybrid components containing a ceramic material, in which detailed features of the components are formed of materials other than ceramic materials, yet result in a robust mechanical attachment of the ceramic and non-ceramic portions of the components. The components includes a first subcomponent formed of a ceramic-based material and a second subcomponent formed of a metallic material. The first subcomponent has a nub and the second subcomponent is separately formed and attached to the first subcomponent by casting the metallic material around the nub of the first subcomponent. The second subcomponent is attached to the first subcomponent by a compression fit and encapsulation of the second subcomponent on the nub of the first subcomponent. The nub has a compliant coating system that provides thermal expansion compliance between the metallic material of the second subcomponent and the ceramic-based material of the first subcomponent.

Components containing ceramic-based materials and coatings therefor

A hybrid turbine airfoil component containing a ceramic material, in which detailed features of the component are formed of materials other than ceramic materials, yet result in a robust mechanical attachment of the ceramic and non-ceramic portions of the component. Such a process entails producing the component to include a first subcomponent and at least a second subcomponent having at least one off-axis geometric feature that results in the second subcomponent having a more complex geometry than the first subcomponent. The first subcomponent is formed of a ceramic-based material, and the second subcomponent and its off-axis geometric feature are separately formed of a metallic material and attached to the first subcomponent to yield a robust mechanical attachment. The component may be, for example, a gas turbine airfoil component.

Processes for producing components containing ceramic-based and metallic materials

A method for orienting cooling holes of a nozzle singlet for a turbine engine is provided. The method includes providing a nozzle singlet having an inner band, an outer band, and at least one airfoil extending therebetween. The method also includes orienting at least one first row of cooling holes an angle with respect to at least one second row of cooling holes. The orientation of the at least one first row and the at least one second row provides a cooling hole pattern that accommodates a change in the airfoil angle without reorienting the cooling hole pattern.

Method and apparatus for fabricating a nozzle segment for use with turbine engines

A method for fabricating a rotor blade is provided. The method includes providing a rotor blade that includes a tip shroud having a portion of increased cross-sectional thickness relative to adjacent portions of the tip shroud. The increased cross-sectional thickness section extends across substantially an entire circumferential width of the tip shroud. The increased cross-sectional thickness section defines a pair of opposite interlock surfaces that each form a portion of a respective side of the pair of opposite tip shroud sides used for interlocking the tip shrouds of two adjacent rotor blades on the rotor. The method also includes removing a portion of the increased cross-sectional thickness section between the pair of opposite tip shroud sides to facilitate enhancing the efficiency of the rotor blade.

A method of assembling a gas turbine engine includes coupling at least one turbine nozzle segment within the gas turbine engine, each turbine nozzle segment includes at least one airfoil vane extending between an inner band and an outer band, wherein the airfoil vane includes a leading edge and a trailing edge, and wherein the outer band includes a front face, a rear face, and an inner surface extending therebetween. The method also includes coupling at least one turbine shroud segment downstream from the at least one turbine nozzle segment, wherein each turbine shroud segment includes a front face, a rear face, and an inner surface extending therebetween, and coupling a cooling fluid source to each turbine nozzle segment such that cooling fluid may be channeled to each turbine nozzle inner surface proximate to one of the leading edge and the trailing edge of each airfoil vane, such that cooling fluid channeled to each turbine nozzle outer band rear face is directed towards the front face of at least one turbine shroud segment.

Methods and apparatus for assembling gas turbine engines

A method enables a gas turbine engine blade to be manufactured to include an airfoil, a platform, a shank, and a dovetail. The platform extends between the airfoil and the shank, the shank extends between the dovetail and the platform, and the dovetail includes at least one tang for securing the blade within the engine. The method comprises defining a cooling cavity in the blade that extends through the airfoil, the platform, the shank, and the dovetail, such that a portion of the cavity defined within the dovetail includes a root passage portion having a first width, and a transition portion extending between the root passage and the portion of the cavity defined within the shank, and wherein the portion of the cavity defined within the shank has a second width that is larger than the root passage first width. The blade is then coated with an environmental resistive coating.

Methods and apparatus for extending gas turbine engine airfoils useful life

A turbine nozzle includes segments of outer and inner bands supporting corresponding vane pairs. The bands adjoin each other at corresponding ends along splitlines, with each band having a forward land, an opposite aft land, and a middle land extending therebetween. The forward lands have a nominal aft-facing step, the aft lands have a nominal forward-facing step and the middle lands are nominally flush.

Turbine airfoil with separately formed tip and method for manufacture and repair thereof

A method is provided for making, from a plurality of members brazed together, an article including an environmental resistant surface coating and a wear resistant surface portion. Prior to brazing, the members are assembled with at least one preform including the wear resistant material in a matrix including a first brazing alloy having a brazing temperature in a brazing temperature range. The assembly of members includes a second brazing alloy having a brazing temperature in the brazing temperature range. The assembly of members and wear resistant preform is heated in the brazing temperature range to provide a brazed article preform. Then the article preform is machined to a selected geometry and can be coated with the environmental coating.

Method of making an environmental resistant brazed assembly including a wear resistant surface portion

A gas turbine engine includes a blade including a leading edge, a trailing edge, a first sidewall extending in radial span between a blade root and blade tip, and a second sidewall connected to the first sidewall at the leading edge and at the trailing edge. The first and second sidewalls each include an outer surface and an inner surface. A cooling cavity is defined by the first sidewall inner surface and the second sidewall inner surface. At least a portion of the cooling cavity is coated with an oxidation resistant environmental coating that has a thickness less than 0.0015 inches.

A gas turbine engine arcuate segment has an arcuate band segment, at least one tab and an arcuate rail segment spaced axially apart from the tab and located along an axial end of the band segment. The tab and the arcuate rail segment extend radially away from the band segment and a space is located between the tab and the rail segment. A tab aperture extends entirely through the tab. The rail segment has a rail aperture entirely therethrough. A leaf seal and a spring are disposed within the space to bias the leaf seal against the aft rail. In an exemplary embodiment, a spring aperture extends entirely through the spring, a seal aperture extends entirely through the leaf seal, and a headless pin is disposed in the apertures such that the leaf seal and the spring are radially restrained by the pin.

A nozzle vane includes a row of trailing edge apertures and cooperating inboard slots joined in flow communication with a mid-chord cavity. An outboard slot is spaced outwardly from a respective last one of the inboard slots, and outboard of a respective last one of the trailing edge apertures. The outboard slot extends behind a braze joint between the vane and a supporting band and is effective for backside cooling thereof.
