A method of securing an optical fiber to a ferrule includes: heating an adhesive composition that is disposed within the ferrule to melt the adhesive composition; inserting the optical fiber into a fiber-receiving passage defining an inner surface of the ferrule and into contact with the melted adhesive composition; and cooling the melted adhesive composition. The adhesive composition is a solid material disposed within the fiber-receiving passage of the ferrule and in contact with the inner surface of the ferrule prior to the heating step. Additionally, the adhesive composition comprises a partially cross-linked resin and a coupling agent that covalently bonds the partially cross-linked resin to respective inorganic surfaces of the optical fiber and the ferrule following the cooling step.

Methods for securing an optical fiber to a ferrule and optical connectors formed by such methods

An optical connector for terminating an optical fiber includes a ferrule, an optical fiber, and an adhesive composition disposed within a fiber-receiving passage of the ferrule. The adhesive composition, which is in contact with the inner surface of the ferrule and the optical fiber, includes a partially cross-linked resin that is a polymer and a coupling agent that chemically bonds the partially cross-linked resin to an inorganic surface of at least one of the optical fiber and the ferrule.

A method for fabricating an EDLC includes (a) coating a porous activated carbon material onto current collector sheets to form carbon-based electrodes, (b) drying the carbon-based electrodes, (c) winding or stacking carbon-based electrodes interleaved with separator sheets to fabricate a jelly roll or prismatic electrode assembly, (d) inserting the electrode assembly into a package and forming electrical connections between the electrode assembly and package terminals, (e) filling the package with a liquid electrolyte, and (f) sealing the package. Steps (a)-(f) are performed in an atmosphere having a low moisture content. The atmosphere may be vacuum or purged with dry gas.

The adhesive composition may include between about 1 to about 85 parts by weight of the thermoset resin per 100 parts by weight of the partially cross-linked resin.

The resin master batch can include ethylene propylene diene with a polymethylene backbone, mineral spirits, fillers, a de-tackifier, a curative, an activator component, and a metal dryer. The process can include adding the mineral spirits to: the ethylene propylene diene, a plasticizer, and the de-tackifier, and blending to form a solution. The process can include adding the fillers, a light stabilizer, a rheology modifier, and a pigment to the solution, forming a first mixture. The process can include adding another rheology modifier, another light stabilizer, an antioxidant, and a curative to the first mixture, forming a second mixture. The process can include mixing the second mixture to homogenously disperse each ingredient while maintaining a temperature of 60 degrees Celsius to prevent the mineral spirits from flashing.

An optical connector for terminating an optical fiber may include a ferrule, an optical fiber, and an adhesive composition. The ferrule may include a fiber-receiving passage defining an inner surface and the adhesive composition may be disposed within the ferrule and in contact with the inner surface of the ferrule and the optical fiber. The adhesive composition may include a partially cross-linked resin, where at least about 5% by weight of the partially cross-linked resin is cross-linked and at least about 5% by weight is not.
