A time-domain reflectometer and a distance measurement method for devices sharing a common bus are provided. The time-domain reflectometer determines a time when to transmit a first ranging signal over a cable based at least in part on when a device presents a first impedance on the cable that is lower than a second impedance of the cable. The time-domain reflectometer transmits the first ranging signal over the cable and in response to transmitting the first ranging signal, receives, over the cable, a first response signal having a peak associated with an impedance mismatch present on the cable resulting from the device presenting the first impedance on the cable. The time-domain reflectometer determines, based on the first response signal, a distance between the time-domain reflectometer and the device.

A testing device which includes a testing unit to perform test procedures on network elements of a communication network and a machine-readable code reader to read a machine-readable code associated with a network element of the communication network. The testing device further includes a computer device configured to: (i) determine a component type associated with the machine-readable code data read; (ii) select from a plurality of configuration files a configuration file based on the component type determined; and (iii) configure the test unit for a test procedure using the configuration file selected, and to perform the test procedure on the network element.

A method and a testing device for determining signal-to-noise headroom of a pair of conductors are provided. In the method and testing device, a gain of electric signal transmissions over a pair of conductors is varied to reach a first gain. Prior to reaching the first gain a transition between reception failure and successful reception of the electric signal transmissions does not occur. A first electric signal having the first gain is transmitted over a first end of the pair of conductors and it is determined that the transition between reception failure and successful reception of the first electric signal occurred. A signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) headroom for the pair of conductors is determined based on the first gain at which the transition between reception failure and successful reception occurred.

A power testing device includes a communication port with pins that receive signals from a device under test. First test circuitry is coupled to a first set of pairs of the pins, and second test circuitry is coupled to a second set of pairs of the pins. A memory stores instructions that cause the processor to control operation of the first test circuitry, the second test circuitry, and the switch.

A system and method for generating messages from a cloud-based server relating to cable test device usage. Provided is at least one test device configured to perform one or more cabling test procedures and a cloud-based server configured to couple to the at least one cable test device for transmission of data therewith. The cloud-based server includes a database configured to store test device activity data received from the one or more cable test devices. The cloud-based server includes a processor configured to define messages to be electronically delivered to one or more prescribed recipients contingent upon a defined event being satisfied by the received cable test device activity data and to analysis the cable test device activity data stored in the database to determine when a defined event has been satisfied. A message is electronically transmitted to the prescribed recipients when the defined event is determined satisfied.

An instrument is disclosed that is capable of detecting and graphically displaying channel usage and the number of access points operating on each channel of interest. By using a module that counts the number of elapsed clock cycles, the total cumulative duration of detected frames, and the number of channel in-use cycles, the instrument can determine the percentage of time a channel is in use, the percentage of time of IEEE 802.11 usage on a channel, and the percentage of time of non-IEEE 802.11 usage on a channel. Further, channels are scanned for access point activity using a scanning algorithm that interleaves scanning channels at a first duration longer than the beacon interval and scanning channels at a second shorter duration.
