A fuel system for an engine has a cylinder with an inlet air port, an air box surrounding the inlet air port, and a gaseous fuel injector positioned in the air box and having a nozzle located at the inlet air port. The fuel system also has a gaseous fuel control valve, a fuel supply line fluidly extending from the gaseous fuel control valve to the gaseous fuel injector, a purge valve, and a purge fluid supply line fluidly extending from the purge valve to at least one of the fuel supply line and the gaseous fuel injector. The fuel system also has a return valve and a return line fluidly extending from at least one of the fuel supply line and the gaseous fuel injector.

Purge system for a dual-fuel engine

An engine system is disclosed. The engine system may have an engine including at least one cylinder. Further, the engine system may have a nozzle configured to selectively inject gaseous fuel into the at least one cylinder of the engine. The engine system may also have an intake port configured to direct air for combustion to the at least one cylinder. In addition, the engine system may have exhaust valves associated with the at least one cylinder. The exhaust valves may be configured to direct exhaust from the cylinder to an atmosphere. The exhaust valves may also be configured to close at different times.

The inner rim surface includes a chamfer sloping from about 9&#xb0; to about 11&#xb0;, such that a profile of the rim is relieved to limit deflection by the piston of the directly injected fuel toward a cylinder wall.

Piston, engine and operating method for reduced production of particulate matter

A piston for an internal combustion engine includes a piston body having an outer cylindrical surface defining a longitudinal piston axis, a combustion face defining a compound combustion bowl, and a compound rim extending radially outward from the compound combustion bowl to the outer cylindrical surface. The compound combustion bowl includes a convex inner bowl surface defining a conical projection and a concave outer bowl surface. The compound rim includes a flat outer rim surface adjoining the outer cylindrical surface, and a convex inner rim surface adjoining the compound combustion bowl. The convex inner bowl surface transitions smoothly to the concave outer bowl surface, and the convex inner rim surface transitions abruptly to the concave outer bowl surface at an edge of the compound combustion bowl.

Piston having combustion bowl shaped to balance combustion efficiency and emission properties

A piston for a compression ignition internal combustion engine includes a piston body having a combustion face defining a combustion bowl, and the combustion face including a compound bowl surface and a compound rim surface. The combustion face is profiled to balance a combustion efficiency property of the piston with emissions properties of the piston, and includes a profile of rotation defining a convex curve segment bisected by the longitudinal axis, and a plurality of concave curve segments outboard of the convex curve segment. The profile of rotation further includes a compound rim profile defining a plurality of convex curve segments corresponding to an inner rim surface. The convex curve segment of the compound bowl profile defines a relatively small radius of curvature, and the plurality of convex curve segments corresponding to the inner rim surface define a relatively large radius of curvature. The combustion face includes an abrupt transition from the compound bowl surface to the compound rim surface.

An exhaust system for a use with a combustion engine is provided. The exhaust system may have a first exhaust manifold configured to receive exhaust from the engine, and a first turbocharger driven by exhaust from the first exhaust manifold. The exhaust system may also have a second exhaust manifold configured to receive exhaust from the engine in parallel with the first exhaust manifold, and a second turbocharger driven by exhaust from the second exhaust manifold and having a different flow capacity than the first turbocharger. The exhaust system may further have an exhaust gas recirculation circuit in fluid communication with the second exhaust manifold.

An exhaust system for a use with a combustion engine is provided. The exhaust system may have a first exhaust manifold, a second exhaust manifold, and an exhaust gas recirculation circuit. The exhaust system may also have a fixed geometry turbocharger with a first volute configured to receive exhaust from the first exhaust manifold, and a second volute configured to receive exhaust from the second exhaust manifold. The exhaust system may also have a recirculation control valve in fluid communication with the first exhaust manifold, the second exhaust manifold and the exhaust gas recirculation circuit. The recirculation control valve may have a valve element movable to selectively adjust a flow of exhaust in the exhaust gas recirculation circuit, the first volute, and the second volute.

An exhaust system for a use with a combustion engine is provided. The exhaust system may have a first exhaust manifold configured to receive exhaust from the engine, a second exhaust manifold configured to receive exhaust from the engine in parallel with the first exhaust manifold, and an exhaust gas recirculation circuit in fluid communication with only the first exhaust manifold. The exhaust system may also have a first turbocharger having dual volutes configured to simultaneously receive exhaust from the first exhaust manifold and the second exhaust manifold, and a second turbocharger configured to receive exhaust from the first turbocharger and compress air directed into the engine.

An exhaust system for a use with a combustion engine is provided. The exhaust system may have a first exhaust manifold configured to receive exhaust from the engine, and at least one turbocharger driven by exhaust from the first exhaust manifold. The exhaust system may also have a second exhaust manifold configured to receive exhaust from the engine in parallel with the first exhaust manifold, and at least two turbochargers driven by exhaust from the second exhaust manifold. The exhaust manifold may further have an exhaust gas recirculation circuit in fluid communication with only the first exhaust manifold. A number of turbochargers that receives exhaust from the first exhaust manifold may be less than a number of turbochargers that receives exhaust from the second exhaust manifold.

An exhaust treatment system of a power source includes a filter having a housing with an inlet and an outlet, and a regeneration device disposed outside of the housing of the filter. The regeneration device is fluidly connected to the inlet of the housing. The exhaust treatment system also includes an exhaust line configured to assist in directing a portion of a filtered flow of exhaust from the filter outlet to the power source.

Methods for operating a fuel injection system of an engine. A first number of the fuel injectors is operated in a first mode during a first engine cycle. The first mode has a first set of fuel delivery characteristics, including at least one fuel shot per fuel injector per engine cycle. A second number of the fuel injectors is operated in a second mode during the first engine cycle. The second mode has a second set of fuel delivery characteristics, including at least one fuel shot per fuel injector per engine cycle.

A method and system may be provided to perform a process for controlling power provided by an engine in a machine. In an embodiment of the present invention, a process for controlling power provided by an engine operating in a machine is provided. The process may include determining a first power value reflecting a predetermined first power to be provided by the engine to a component operating in the machine and determining, during machine operations, at least one of a parasitic load power value and an intermittent power load value. A second power value may then be determined that reflects a second power provided by the engine based on the parasitic power value, the intermittent power value, and the net power value. The second power value is adjusted such that the engine substantially provides the predetermined net power to the component.

System for dynamically controlling power provided by an engine

An apparatus and method for varying the current levels of a fuel injection signal used in connection with an electronically controlled hydraulic actuator unit injector fuel system is disclosed. The apparatus and method varies the current level of the fuel injection signal delivered to the unit injector based on sensed engine parameters, which preferably include a sensed pressure of hydraulic actuating fluid and a sensed temperature of the engine.
