A catalyst is prepared by reacting tungsten hexafluoride with water in a molar ratio of 2:1 to 20:1. This catalyst can be used to oligomerize 1-butene to produce synthetic hydrocarbon oils.

Catalyst prepared from tungsten hexafluoride and water

A synthetic hydrocarbon fluid is prepared by oligomerizing an olefin reactant in the presence of a catalyst prepared by reacting tungsten hexafluoride and water at a moderate temperature. For example, 1-butene is oligomerized at a temperature of about 40.degree. C. in the presence of a catalyst obtained by reacting tungsten hexafluoride and water in a four to one mol ratio. The liquid oligomer product is then hydrogenated to remove residual unsaturation.

Synthetic hydrocarbon oligomers

A synthetic hydrocarbon fluid is prepared by oligomerizing an olefin reactant in the presence of a catalyst prepared by reacting tungsten hexafluoride and a branched-chain aliphatic alcohol at a moderate temperature. A synthetic insulating oil for electrical power transformers is prepared by reacting benzene in a 1:1 molar ratio with a tetramerpentamer mixture obtained by the oligomerization of 1-decene.

High fire point alkylaromatic insulating fluid

A diaminophenoxy or a dinitrophenoxybenzene is prepared in good yield from dibromobenzene and an alkali metal salt of meta-aminophenol or meta-nitrophenol under Ullmann ether synthesis conditions at low temperatures of 115.degree. C. to 150.degree. C.

Electrical apparatus containing a novel synthetic oil as an insulating fluid which is prepared by reacting an aromatic compound with the oligomers of four to 12 carbon alpha-olefins containing predominantly at least about 30 carbon atoms up to about 60 carbon atoms. For example, an electrical power transformer is provided containing a synthetic insulating oil prepared by reacting benzene in a 1:1 molar ratio with a tetramer-pentamer mixture obtained by the oligomerization of 1-decene.
