A valve assembly comprises a rotatable valve, an electrically operated actuator, and an overstroke device. The actuator comprises a component configured to move in a direction to an actuator position so as to cause corresponding rotation of the valve to a valve position in response to electrical operation of the actuator. The overstroke device is configured to enable the component to move in the direction beyond the actuator position to an overstroke position while the valve remains in the valve position in response to electrical operation of the actuator.

A powertrain control system is provided that includes an engine having multiple cylinders. A controller selectively activates the cylinders to provide a cylinder combination having a desired power displacement. In one example powertrain control system, the controller selectively activates the cylinders between a V-8 and V-4 mode. An exhaust system having a valve and an electrical actuator selectively electrically actuates the valve in response to the controller between multiple positions. The electrical actuator moves the valve from an open position in V-8 mode to a partially closed position in V-4 mode to increase back pressure and reduce NVH issues in V-4 mode. A muffler includes a housing having an exhaust passage. The valve is supported by the housing and arranged in the exhaust passage. The valve is moveable between multiple positions for tuning the muffler. The electrical actuator is supported by the housing to actuate the valve between the multiple positions.

The present invention involves thermal management of an integrated emission reduction system for the removal of particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) from diesel engine exhaust streams. The inventive integrated emission reduction system may include a diesel particulate filter (DPF), a heat source for adjusting the temperature of the exhaust stream entering the DPF, at least one selective catalytic reducer of NOx, a heat exchanger for adjusting the temperature of the exhaust stream entering the NOx reducer, and a computing device for monitoring the temperature and/or pressure of the exhaust stream entering the DPF and the NOx reducer, and for controlling the operation of the heat exchanger and heat source, thereby improving the efficiency of the DPF and the NOx reducer.

A heat transfer system for transferring heat for use onboard a vehicle includes a conductor arranged to conduct exhaust gas discharged from an engine of the vehicle along a serpentine path to generate back pressure for transmission to the engine so that heat of exhaust gas flowing along the serpentine path is maximized. The heat transfer system includes a tube arranged to conduct fluid so that heat is transferred from the exhaust gas to the fluid.
