An electrical connector and termination tool are disclosed for making crimped, insulation-piercing terminations with insulation covered conductors. The connector includes a dielectric insert, a plurality of electrical contacts mounted in the insert and an access passage for insertion of a termination tool to effect the crimp-pierce termination in situ. The termination tool has a bifurcated termination head including separate insertion and crimping members which are used sequentially to first press the conductor into the terminal portion of the contact and then to crimp the contact over the conductor to complete the termination.

An insulated conductor is terminated in an insulation-opening portion of an electrical contact and the contact jaws are crimped over the conductor to secure the conductor therein. A tool includes a pair of cutting edges and crimping surfaces for cutting and folding over sections of the contact jaws as the tool presses an insulated conductor into an insulation-opening notch formed by the contact jaws. The tool includes a forward end having a surface for engaging and pressing the conductor into the notch, the surface acting against the conductor as a stop to limit the depth of cut of the cutting edges. The tool may also be used after conductor insertion by other techniques to perform the crimping operation. The side surfaces of the tool slidingly engage the cut edges of the contact jaws and prevent an inward movement of the jaws during cutting and crimping. The resulting electrical connection is mechanically secure in that a normally open conductor-receiving channel is closed by the peeled over sections of the contact jaws there by preventing outward movement of the conductor. The contact structure is of particular advantage where stranded wire is used in that the clamping action of the peeled over sections prevents relaxation distortions of the conductor which has become distorted during insertion and thus prevents pressure drop at the contact jaws which can result from relaxation distortion.

An apparatus is disclosed for simultaneously terminating a plurality of insulated metallic conductors in the insulation-piercing contact members of a multi-contact connector. The apparatus includes a base which supports the connector in conductor-receiving position and a carriage which carries a reciprocating insertion tool. The carriage is pivotally attached to the base and moves between an open position and an operating position wherein the insertion tool is aligned with the connector. Locating means are mounted on the carriage in fixed spatial relation to the insertion tool to align the connector for the termination operation as the carriage moves to the operating position. Self-actuated latch means retains the carriage in the operating position and includes a release means which may be actuated while returning the carriage to the open position, all in a single operation.

Conductor terminating apparatus

A field termination tool for electrical connectors includes a connector support which is positioned between a pair of rotatably mounted insertion arms. Each of the insertion arms includes a multiblade insertion rod for engaging and pressing insulated conductors into respective insulation-piercing contact portions carried by a supported electrical connector. The connector support is constructed as a one-piece comb structure, preferably molded from glass-filled thermoplastic material with metal conductor cutting strips molded in, which is releasably engageable with the frame of the termination tool, and likewise releasably engageable with a bench-mounted support so that electrical connectors can be positioned in the comb structure and have the insulated conductors aligned with respective insulation-piercing contact portions at a point remote from the insertion tool. An insertion control mechanism takes two forms. A first form includes the provision of a ratchet on one insertion arm and a pawl on the other insertion arm which engages the ratchet and is prevented from disengagement therefrom until the arms have been moved toward each other to positions which constitute complete insertion of the conductors. A second form of control mechanism utilizes a pair of torque handles mounted on respective arms and each operable to generate a mechanical vibration or signal, e.g. an audible click, upon the application of a predetermined torque to each rotatable insertion arm. The attainment of the predetermined torque corresponds to complete conductor insertion.

Field termination tool having a removable connector mounting mechanism

An apparatus is disclosed for simultaneously terminating a plurality of insulated metallic conductors in the insulation-piercing contact members of a multi-contact connector. The apparatus includes a base which supports the connector in conductor-receiving position and a carriage which carries a reciprocating insertion tool. The carriage is pivotally attached to the base and moves between an open position and an operating position wherein the insertion tool is aligned with the connector. Locating means are mounted on the carriage in fixed spatial relation to the insertion tool to align the connector for the termination operation as the carriage moves to the operating position. An electrical connector assembly including a tubular electrical interference filter mounted coaxially about an electrical conductor in a dielectric insert having means for flexibly engaging and mounting the filter in the dielectric insert. In particular, the dielectric insert includes a plurality of longitudinally extending ribs protruding into the passageway of the dielectric insert to flexibly engage and support the tubular filter therein and thereby isolate the filter from radial stress commonly occurring during the telescopic engagement of the electrical connector assembly by a complementary connector assembly.

A support structure is disclosed for mounting a mobile antenna to a support plate and for connecting the antenna to a coaxial cable. The structure includes an electrically conductive nut adapted for mounting on the support plate, a dielectric cap to receive and house the nut and clamping means disposed between the nut and cap. The nut, cap and clamping means each has a central bore or passage to accommodate the cable. The clamping means is also constructed such that its frictional engagement with the cap is less than its frictional engagement with the nut, such that as the cap is threaded over the clamping means and nut, the clamping means remains generally stationary relative to the nut.

A field termination tool for electrical connectors includes laterally floating combs having edges which engage respective longitudinal slots on each side of an electrical connector to define a reference plane, the connector being urged toward the reference plane by a wave or blade spring carried on the connector support. The insertion tool is constructed to force insulated conductors into respective insulation piercing portions of connector contacts equally well for different connector widths by apparatus for positioning one of a pair of oppositely directed rotatable insertion arms with respect to the other and to the connector support and by providing a floating support structure to equalize forces across a connector. The comb slots each have a cutting edge which is cooperable in a scissor action with the cutting edges of the insertion blades carried on the insertion arms to cut the conductors immediately prior to insertion. The insertion arms are forced perpendicular to their planes of rotation to prevent parting of the cutting edges during the cutting operation.

A termination apparatus for electrical connectors, which includes an improved apparatus for applying operating forces from an apparatus operator to rotatable insertion arms, is provided for use in inserting a plurality of insulated conductors into respective insulation piercing contact portions of an electrical connector. The disclosed apparatus includes a frame, a removable support structure for a connector, which aligns the insulated conductors adjacent respective insulation-piercing contact portions of the connector, a pair of oppositely disposed insertion tools that are rotatably mounted on the frame for movement toward and away from each other and that carry insertion tools for inserting the insulated conductors into the connector, and an assembly that more effectively applies and distributes operating forces to the insertion arms during a termination cycle. The disclosed assembly for applying and distributing operating forces includes a removable and independently positionable handle structure that is releasably secured to and imparts rotational motion to a rotatable camming shaft carried by the frame. A spiral groove is provided in the rotatably camming shaft which engages and defines a predetermined path of travel for camming rollers carried by each of the insertion arms.

Termination apparatus for electrical connectors

A pi pin filter employs a tubular ferrite which receives a pin contact therein. The ferrite tube is metalized over at least a portion of its inner surface, at least two portions of its outer surface, and about its ends and receives the pin contact therein for electrical connection to the metalization by means of a spring contact, solder bonding or fusing. A plurality of dielectric layers extend radially of the ferrite tube and are bonded together to form an integral structure having metal capacitor plates between the layers. Some of the capacitor plates are interconnected, by a metalization to form the ground plates for connection to the metal shell of an electrical connector, while others of the metal plates located intermediate the first-mentioned metal plates are interconnected in two separate groups by a separate metalizations which, upon assembly, are fused to the respective metalized areas on the outer surface of the ferrite tube. A gap in the metalization between the two areas of the outer surface of the ferrite tube, together with the common connection of the first-mentioned plates provides a pair of capacitances and the ferrite tube constitutes an inductance connected between the two capacitances to form a pi filter.

The following specification describes a connector assembly employing a capacitor assembly having axially spaced radially extending capacitor plates carried by a ceramic or dielectric member. One plurality of plates are connected in common to the connector shell and other radially extending axially spaced plates are connected to respective contacts of the connector to form a filter capacitor for each contact. A conductive elastomer or metal spring engaging one of the common plates under axial pressure ensures a secure electrical ground connection between the plates common to the connector contacts and the shell while a metal spring preassembled to each contact at an axial position coincident with the capacitor assembly exerts a radial outward pressure to ensure an electrical connection to the capacitor plates associated with the respective contact.

Apparatus is disclosed for terminating insulation covered conductors in the individual contacts of a multiple contact connector. The apparatus includes a base or connector-holding jig and an insertion tool. The base includes means for holding the connector in conductor mounting position; stationary and retractable comb elements for aligning the individual conductors with the proper contacts of the connector; and shear means. The tool includes a transverse guide portion and a longitudinal blade which form a generally T-shaped tool head. The tool head is configured to cooperate with slots formed in and by the comb elements to position the tool in proper alignment for the trimming and mounting operations.

A field termination tool for electrical connectors includes a connector support which is positioned between a pair of rotatably mounted insertion arms.
