A magneto-resistive (MR) device for reading at least one of a legacy data and a present data magnetically recorded on at least one legacy track and a least one present track, respectively, is provided. The device comprises first and second MR elements, and first, second, and third permanent magnets. The first MR read element is positioned between the first and the second permanent magnets to stabilize the first MR read element while reading the legacy data from the media. The second MR element is positioned adjacent to the second permanent magnet and configured to read the present data from the media. The third permanent magnet is positioned adjacent to the second MR element and opposite to the second permanent magnet. The second and the third permanent magnets cooperate with each other to stabilize the second MR read element while reading the present data from the media.

A method is disclosed for controlling spacing between the transducer and a magnetic storage tape by heating the transducer head to cause thermal expansion and reduce pole tip recession.

A method is provided for inhibiting corrosion in a layer of Cu or other material in a GMR sensor, wherein the GMR sensor may be used in a magnetic data storage system such as a tape drive system to substantially improve read head sensitivity. The GMR sensor comprises stacked layers of ferromagnetic and non-magnetic materials. In one useful embodiment, a layer of Cu material is positioned between first and second layers of a specified ferromagnetic material, such as CoFe. Respective end surfaces of the Cu layer and first and second CoFe layers are initially located in substantially co-planar relationship with one another, in a common plane. The method further comprises etching the Cu layer to remove an amount of material therefrom. A new end surface is thus formed in the Cu layer, wherein the new end surface is selectively spaced apart from the common plane. A protective coating is then applied to the new end surface of the Cu layer, to inhibit corrosion of such layer. Usefully, a pole tip recession is formed at the ends of the first and second CoFe layers.

A magnetic head for writing data to and reading data from a magnetic recording medium includes an inductive-type writer, an anisotropic magneto-resistive (AMR) reader, and a giant magneto-resistive (GMR) reader. The AMR reader is used to read data from 'high magnetic flux' recording mediums which have been recorded for use with AMR sensors. The GMR reader is used to read data from 'low magnetic flux' recording mediums which have been recorded for use with GMR sensors. As such, the magnetic head provides for backward compatibility between the previously prevalent &#x201c;high magnetic flux&#x201d; recording mediums and the expected future prevalent &#x201c;low magnetic flux&#x201d; recording mediums. The magnetic head may be configured such that the writer and the AMR and GMR readers share sensor shields in various configurations in order to carry out their writing and reading functions.

A heat-assisted magnetic recorder for magnetically recording information onto a recording medium having a given recording coercive field includes an electron beam generator and a magnetic recording head. The electron beam generator directs an electron beam onto the recording medium in order to locally heat a portion of the recording medium such that the heated recording medium portion has a recording coercive field lower than the given recording coercive field. The magnetic recording head generates a magnetic recording field having an intensity greater than the recording coercive field of the heated recording medium portion in order to magnetically record information onto the heated recording medium portion. The electron beam generator includes a plurality of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) embedded in nanoholes of an anodic alumina template for generating the electron beam. A heat-assisted magnetic recording method is associated with the heat-assisted magnetic recorder.
