A light source system that generates stable optical power over time and temperature in which a feedback control circuit is operative to receive a temperature signal and a sample signal and in response thereto generate a control signal to a driver circuit to maintain a power level of the light output substantially constant over an operative temperature range defined by Tand T.

High-stability light source system and method

A light source system and method that generates stable optical power over time and temperature for use in laser scanning, turbidity sensing, airborne-particle analysis, fog and visibility monitoring, blood-gas analysis and applications where light source output intensity changes less than one-half percent over a 50&#xb0; C. range. The system includes a miniature semiconductor light emitter that can be powered by two AAA alkaline batteries for more than 100 hours and is about 1 cmin size (TO-5 package). A semiconductor light emitter emits a beam of linearly polarized light through a coated optical element having first and second surfaces that meet at an acute angle, the first surface reflecting a portion of the light to a control system and transmitting the rest through the second surface in a direction normal to it and thereby enabling immunity to light interference in the reflected and transmitted beams and novel, error-canceling properties.

High-stability light source system and method of manufacturing

A probe with antifouling components. The probe includes a sensor for measuring attributes of a fluid such as liquid or gas. The probe includes antifouling components to prevent or inhibit fouling. The antifouling components include material components, antifoulant components such as biocide, scaling inhibitors, etc., and wiper/shutter components that are arranged to collectively prevent or inhibit fouling of the probe or of the sensor included in the probe.

A semiconductor light source with optical feedback includes a vertical member extending upward from an upper horizontal surface of a header parallel to a vertical beam projected from a semiconductor light-emitting element mounted on the horizontal surface of the header wherein the vertical member supports a light-sensing element for receiving light reflected transversely from the vertical beam by a beam splitter supported by the vertical member. The vertical beam passing through the beam splitter passes through a window or filter in a cap mounted on the header and covering the light-emitting element, the light-sensing element, the beam splitter, and the vertical member. Substantially all of the transversely reflected light impinges on the light-sensing element and can be used to control the power to the light-emitting element. A simple lens can by used to collimate the beam. Interior portions of the unit are formed from light absorbing materials such as black ceramic, black plastic, anodized aluminum, etc. The combined effect of the non-reflective interior of the assembly, the orientation of the photo-diode to have an acceptance cone perpendicular to the beam axis, the small entrance pupil, and the optical filter reduces ambient radiation in the unit by as much as &#x2212;75 dB of the level outside the device. This reduces noise and drift in the automatic power control loop to produce constant intensity in the output light beam.

Semiconductor light source with optical feedback

A particle momentum detector has a massive support with a flat surface on which is mounted a piezoelectric member supporting a flat low mass plate resistant to deformation by impinging particles. The low mass plate has a rigidity suppressing multiple mode vibration of the plate. The piezoelectric member generates a damped oscillating electrical signal when a particle impinges upon the plate. A circuit integrates a portion, such as the first half cycle, of the damped oscillating electrical signal to determine momentum of the particle.

Particle momentum sensor

A suspended particle concentration monitor includes near and far detector circuits with near and far elements sensing scattered visible or near infrared radiation projected into a fluid volume in which particle concentration is determined. The spacing and characteristics of the light sensitive elements and the gains of the near and far detector circuits are selected to produce generally equal peak signals at separate particle concentrations. A computer contains three tables each containing particle concentrations in respective portions of the particle concentration range being monitored. Based upon analysis of the near and far detector signals, one of the tables is selected and used to find the particle concentration corresponding to one of the near and far detector signals.

Knee pillow

A sensor for detecting particle flux in a stream has a hollow armored housing enclosing a vibration transducer coupled to the housing for detecting particles impinging on the housing. Also enclosed in the housing is a data logging and control unit for recording particle flux for later retrieval. An ultrasonic acoustic beacon for signalling the condition of the sensor and for indicating the position of the sensor in the event of displacement is also mounted on the sensor. Additionally a brightly colored long buoyant pennant is attached for enabling visual relocation of a displaced sensor.
