Aluminum titanate batch compositions and method

An engine exhaust system is disclosed which in operation is capable of substantially reducing the quantities of hydrocarbons emitted to the atmosphere during engine start-up. The system utilizes molecular sieve means, such as a high-silica zeolite, which function to adsorb hydrocarbons emitted during engine start-up, before the catalytic converter has attained its effective operating temperature. The system is designed so that, once the catalytic converter has attained an effective operating temperature, the hydrocarbons can be desorbed from the molecular sieve means and conveyed to the converter for conversion to non-toxic by-products.

This invention relates to the high temperature stabilization of aluminum titanate and aluminum titanate-mullite compositions by the addition of iron oxide. It has been found that iron oxide concentrations greater than 5 weight percent and as high as approxkmately 25 weight percent have a stabilization effect at high temperatures on aluminum titanates. The resultant ceramic body is further enhanced by the addition of from 0.1 to 5 weight percent rare earth oxide.

This invention relates to the high temperature stabilization of aluminum titanate and aluminum titanate-mullite compositions by the addition of iron oxide. It has been found that iron oxide concentrations greater than 5 weight percent and as high as approximately 25 weight percent have a stabilization effect at high temperatures on aluminum titanates. High temperature low thermal expansion ceramic

A monolithic refractory honeycomb filter of zircon or zircon plus an oxide additive is useful to remove impurities from molten metal, particularly from molten steel. The filter has a frontal contact surface containing the openings of a plurality of through-and-through cells for passage of the molten metal. Impurities adhere to the frontal contact surface of the filter and to the cell walls themselves.

Method of filtering molten metals using a monolithic refractory

This invention is directed to the production of sintered ceramic articles wherein aluminum titanate and mullite constitute the predominant crystal phases and wherein the microstructure thereof evidences grain boundary and intracrystalline microcracking. The articles have base compositions encompassed within the area I, J, K, L, M, I of the drawing to which 0.5-5% Fe.sub.2 O.sub.3 and/or 0.5-5% rare earth metal oxide may be added.
