Systems and methods are provided for facilitating analysis of a communications system through the use of a multi-protocol communications analyzer. A graphical user interface employed in connection with the multi-protocol communications analyzer enables a user to create a new domain, or modify an existing domain, that includes a list of ports selected by the user, where each port is associated with a particular communication link of the communications system. The ports are selected from a list of available ports displayed by the graphical user interface. The ports selected for inclusion in the domain can then be configured, by way of the graphical user interface, as desired. After the domain has been defined, the domain can then be used to analyze one or more of the links associated with the ports included in the domain.

Systems and methods for creation and use of a virtual protocol analyzer

A method is provided for forming an optical waveguide structure upon a substrate in accordance with the steps of: (a) forming a layer of base coat material upon the substrate, (b) forming a layer of cladding material having a predetermined refractive index upon the base coat layer, (c) applying a channel waveguide pattern defining structure to the layer of cladding material, (d) applying a patterning agent to transfer the pattern of the channel waveguide pattern defining structure to a predetermined depth or depths into the cladding material layer to define a waveguide trench pattern, (e) removing any remaining residue of channel waveguide pattern defining structure, (f) forming a thick coat layer of waveguide material having a higher refractive index than the cladding material onto the cladding material and into the waveguide trench pattern, (g) planarizing the waveguide material substantially to the plane of a topmost surface of the cladding material in order to reduce the thickness of the thick coat layer, and (h) forming a layer of additional cladding material to encapsulate the waveguide material in the waveguide trench pattern. An out-of-plane mirror can be used to couple two different layers together optically. A lens element can be used for collimating light reflected by the out-of-plane mirror.

An article suitable for use in the adhesive joining of two optical fibers with low light loss comprises a tubular container an inner surface of which is coated with a release agent and/or is composed of an inherently releasing material, which is larger in cross-section at the ends than at a central region, the smaller central region being where the ends of the fibers are joined.

Optical fiber adhesive joint tube

An optical coupler for withdrawing light from an optical fiber includes first and second movable members on which are mounted a plurality of bending posts offset longitudinally relative to one another. A retaining post, offset longitudinally from the bending posts, has a groove therein so that an optical fiber can be wrapped therearound. Thereafter, the first and second members are moved towards each other such that the bending posts interleaf and bend the optical fiber in a plurality of positions causing light to be emitted from the optical fiber at bent portions thereof, which light is detected by optical detectors located behind the bending posts.

A method and apparatus for determining a dB loss across an optical fiber splice includes the steps of determining a first maximum detected optical signal when the fiber ends are moved relative to each other in a X direction, determining a second maximum optical signal when the fiber ends are moved relative to each other in a Y direction, determining a third optical signal when the fiber ends are optimally substantially aligned, determining a fourth optical signal when subsequent to the fiber ends actually being secured to each other.

Determining splice attenuation

This invention provides an article for storing and dispensing tubes open at two ends and containing materials which are pure or must be protected from the environment or which are present in premeasured amounts. The article of this invention comprises a flexible tape for sealing the ends of the tubes, flexible tape being movable within a case to hold the tubes sealed in the case and discharge the tubes from the case. One embodiment is a cassette for tubes containing adhesive for splicing optical fibers.

Tube storage and delivery device

A method of transmitting light which has a substantial component having a wavelength below 300 nm includes passing said light through an optical fiber which has a core of synthetic fused silica containing between 500 and 1500 ppm water and a cladding of fluorine-doped synthetic fused silica. Apparatus employing such a fiber is also described.
