In order to control the transfer of packets of information among a plurality of stations, the instant communications system, station and protocol contemplate first and second oppositely directed signal paths. At least two stations are coupled to both the first and the second signal paths. A station reads one signal from a path and writes another signal on the path. The one signal is read by an arrangement which electrically precedes the arrangement for writing the other signal. Packets are transmitted in a regular, cyclic sequence. A head station on a forward path writes a start cycle code for enabling each station to transmit one or more packets. If a station has a packet to transmit, it can read the bus field of a packet on the forward path. Responsive thereto, a logical interpretation may be made as to whether the forward path is busy or is not busy. If the path is not busy, the packet may be written on the path by overwriting any signal thereon including the busy field. If the path is busy, the station may defer the writing until the path is detected as not busy. In order to accommodate different types of traffic, the head station may write different start cycle codes. For example, a start-of-voice code may enable stations to transmit voice packets; a start-of-data code may enable stations to transmit data packets, etc. for the different types of traffic. Further, the start cycle codes may be written in a regular, e.g., periodic, fashion to mitigate deleterious effects, such as speech clipping. Still further, the last station on the forward path may write end cycle codes in packets on a reverse path for communicating control information to the head station. Responsive to the control information, the head station may modify the cycle to permit the respective stations to, for example, transmit more than one packet per cycle or to vary the number of packet time slots, which are allocated to each of the different types of traffic.

Here the two paths are coupled to form two ring structures so the packets flow down the path to a destination station. Eventually all packets will be transmitted and the busy control field loops around to a station which is designated as a control station. The control station, responsive to detecting that all packets have been transmitted on one of the paths, may transmit a start cycle packet on the one path, responsive to which event a new cycle may be started by initializing each station on the one path and by permitting each initialized station to transmit. In the event of an electrical open, the system, station and protocol are adapted to reconfigure the system so that the station electrically preceding the open functions as an end station while the station electrically succeeding the open functions as a head station.

Eventually all packets will be transmitted and the busy control field may be detected at an end station for indicating the event that all packets have been transmitted. The end station on one path acts as the head station on the other oppositely directed path. Hence, responsive to detecting that all packets have been transmitted, the head station on the other path may transmit an end cycle packet, responsive to which event a new cycle may be started by initializing each station on the one path and by permitting each initialized station to transmit.

Collision avoiding system and protocol for a two path multiple access

With the advent of digital communications, it is common to transfer packets of information among a plurality of stations, e.g., digital computers. In order to control the transfer of the packets, various protocols have been introduced. However, the efficiency related to known multiples access digital communications system protocols tends to decrease as the digital signal rate increases. To overcome such problems, the instant communications system and protocol contemplate a communications loop having first and second oppositely directed signal paths. At least two stations are coupled to both the first and the second signal paths. A station includes an arrangement for writing a first signal on the first path and an arrangement for reading a second signal from the second path. In addition, the station includes an arrangement for reading a third signal from the first path. The third signal is coupled from the first path to the station by an arrangement which electrically precedes the arrangement for writing the first signal on the first path. If the station has a packet to transmit, it can overwrite a busy control field of the third signal packet on the first path. Having read the third signal on the first path, a logical interpretation may be made within the station as to whether the first path is busy or not busy. If the first path is not busy, the packet may be written on the first path by overwriting the third signal thereon. If the first path is busy, the station may overwrite a request control field of the third signal for indicating that the station was unable to transmit the packet. The packets flow around the loop and are monitored on the second path. Eventually all packets will be transmitted and the request control field may be detected at the receive side of a head station for indicating the event that all packets have been transmitted, in which event a new cycle may be started by initializing each station on the loop and by permitting each station to transmit.

Collision avoiding system and protocol for a multiple access digital

A communications path having at least two stations coupled thereto. During time intervals when no station on the path has a packet to transmit, start-of-cycle packets for timing and synchronizing the stations are routinely transmitted between respective ends of the path. When a station has a packet of information to transmit, the station monitors the path for detecting whether or not the path is busy. On the one hand, if the path is not busy, a predetermined delay is introduced before the station is permitted to transmit a packet. The delay is related to the electrical distance between the station, which has the packet to transmit, and a station, which priorly transmitted a packet including a start-of-cycle packet. Also, the delay begins when the priorly transmitted packet is received by the station. On the other hand, if the path is busy, the station monitors the path until the path becomes not busy at which point the predetermined delay is introduced, the delay being related to the electrical distance between the station and that station which caused the path to be busy. On either hand, at the expiration of the delay and if the path has remained not busy during all of the predetermined delay, the station then transmits its packet; otherwise the station does not transmit its packet until a subsequent cycle. Thereby collisions are avoided and variable length packets are transmitted and received.

Collision avoiding system, apparatus and protocol for a multiple access

The luminance and two chrominance signals generated in a color video system are all translated into pulse code modulation signals by a plurality of analog-to-digital encoders. The luminance signal is then differentially encoded into variable length digital words and applied to a buffer. The encoded differences of the luminance signal are between the values of successive picture elements along horizontal scan lines. At least one of the chrominance signals is encoded using differences between corresponding picture element values in alternate horizontal scan lines. When the differences are large, the value of the corresponding picture element of the intermediate horizontal scan line is classified. If half the difference between the large transition of alternate picture element values does not correspond to the value of the intermediate picture element, another code word indicative of both intermediate picture element and alternate picture element is used. This improves the coding accuracy of large transitions in the chrominance signal which is also applied to the buffer. The output of the buffer is then transmitted over a channel to receiver. The receiver decodes each signal component to produce an analog replica. The chrominance signal is decoded using an interpolation technique that is also responsive to the code words indicative of both intermediate and alternate picture element values. Accordingly, the analog replica of the chrominance signal is produced which faithfully reproduces sharp color edges in the video scene.

Temporal changes in an object are detected by focusing light from preselected spatial locations of the object on associated first and second regions of a light sensitive target at first and second times, respectively, and by comparing the light intensity focused on the regions. The focusing apparatus includes a Ronchi grating located at an image plane between the object and a light sensitive target. At the first time, light from the object passes through the clear portions of the grating to illuminate alternate parallel stripes on the target, while at the second time, the light passing through the clear portions is shifted to illuminate the regions between the first parallel stripes. The target is then scanned, and information from associated stripes is compared to detect changes. In one embodiment, the shaft can be brought about by the use of a birefringent crystal and polarized light; alternatively, a beam splitter and a shutter arrangement can be used.

Method and apparatus for detecting temporal changes in an object

Apparatus is disclosed for selecting video frames indicative of still pictures from successive video frames, a portion of which are indicative of moving objects and the remaining frames are indicative of still objects. The input and output video signal paths of a frame memory are completed through switches. A speed measurement circuit utilizes the signals at the input and output of the frame memory as the video signal is applied thereto to identify frames indicative of still objects. A logic circuit that operates the switches responds to the output of the speed measurement circuit by changing the position of the switches to retain the content of the frame memory and apply same to the output signal path. Timing circuits are also advantageously utilized to slow down the selection rate of frames indicative of still objects and force the selection of a more recent video frame when the speed of movement fails to fall below a predetermined value.

Video conferencing, wherein the outputs of a plurality of television cameras at one location are transmitted to a second location so that parties at the first location are perceived as present by parties at the second location, has received some attention directed toward bandwidth reduction. The subject invention relates to an improved video conferencing system for reducing bandwidth by advantageously applying temporal resolution and spatial reduction to a video picture provided by each camera. The temporal resolution of a picture from one or more of the cameras can be automatically adapted to a control signal, for example, to a speech level control signal so as to advantageously interleave and to give priority to a picture from one camera over a picture from other television cameras. The spatial reduction of each picture obtains by transmitting and displaying less than the total picture, illustratively the middle two-thirds of the picture from each camera.

Video conferencing system using spatial reduction and temporal resolution

Alternate lines of a 526 line video signal are time-stretched and transmitted over a transmission channel of limited bandwidth. At the receiver, the lines are compressed back to their original duration and displayed in an interlaced manner on a conventional receiver by blanking alternate lines in each field. In another embodiment of the invention, adjacent transmitted lines of the video signal are averaged at the receiver and the resultant signals are substituted for the non-transmitted lines of the video signal.
