A patient ventilation system and a computing device-implemented method determine oxygen consumption in a mechanically ventilated subject includes receiving a signal representing a total flow at an inspiratory outlet of a ventilator, calculating a transport delay time between inspiratory and expiratory gas sample points in a patient ventilation circuitry, transmitting a signal to an inlet selector valve to selectively open a fluid path between the inspiratory gas sample point and an oxygen sensor or between the expiratory gas sample point and the oxygen sensor, receiving data representing oxygen content and carbon dioxide content over a period of time, calculating oxygen consumption data over the period of time from the data representing the total flow, oxygen content and carbon dioxide content and from the transport delay time, and displaying the oxygen consumption data over the period of time.

Methods and apparatus for cleaning a central venous catheter port are disclosed. An apparatus includes a body, a coupling configured to connect the body to the hub, a cleaning cap coupled to the body, and an actuator disposed within the body for rotating and translating the cap relative to the hub. The cleaning cap includes a cap body defining a cavity and a cleaning member disposed within the cavity, the cleaning member having threads that engage with the threads on the hub.

Apparatuses for cleaning catheter ports

The inventors have developed tools for quantifying the mitochondrial redox state of in vivo, in situ tissue using resonance Raman spectroscopy. The tissue is illuminated with an excitation beam that causes the tissue to scatter Raman-shifted light, which is collected and analyzed to produce coefficients representing the relative concentrations of different chromophores in the tissue. These relative concentrations indicate the redox state of whole mitochondria, hemoglobin oxygen saturation, myoglobin oxygen saturation, and/or redox state of individual cytochrome complexes in mitochondria of the in vivo, in situ tissue. Quantifiable information about these states and/or saturations can be used to assess tissue health, including organ (dys)function before, during, and after surgery. For example, this information can be used to predict impending cardiac failure, to guide surgical interventions, to monitor organ health after transplantation, or to guide post-operative care.

Gas-filled stabilized particles and methods of use

Formulations containing a carrier and microbubbles encapsulating oxygen gas, and methods for making and using the formulations are described herein. The formulations are manufactured by a process which includes high shear homogenization. The resulting microbubble suspension may be centrifuged to further concentrate the microbubbles. The resulting concentrated LOM suspension preferably has an oxygen content ranging from 50 to 99% (vol). Prior to administration to a patient, the viscosity of the LOM suspension may be reduced to the desired viscosity, preferably similar to the viscosity of the patient's blood. The resulting LOM formulation typically has an oxygen concentration ranging from 65 to 80% (vol). The microbubbles are formed from one or more lipids, preferably one or more phospholipids, most preferably DSPC, and preferably also contain one or more stabilizing agents/excipients, preferably cholesterol.

Process for forming microbubbles with high oxygen content and uses thereof

Compositions containing a carrier and microbubbles encapsulating one or more gases, preferably oxygen, and methods for making and using the compositions are described herein. The microbubbles contain a lipid envelope. The compositions may be administered to a patient to quickly deliver large amounts of oxygen to the patient's blood supply or directly to a tissue in need of oxygen. The compositions may be administered via injection or as a continuous infusion. The compositions contain a concentrated microbubble suspension, where the suspension contains at least 40 mL oxygen/dL suspension. The microbubbles are preferably less than 20 microns in diameter, more preferably less than 15 microns in diameter. The microbubbles described herein may be administered to a patient in an effective amount to increase in oxygen concentration in the patient's blood, and/or one or more tissues or organs.
