A biological fluid sample analysis cartridge is provided. The cartridge includes a housing, a fluid module, and an analysis chamber. The fluid module includes a sample acquisition port and an initial channel, and is connected to the housing. The initial channel is sized to draw fluid sample by capillary force, and is in fluid communication with the acquisition port. The initial channel is fixedly positioned relative to the acquisition port such that at least a portion of a fluid sample disposed within the acquisition port will draw into the initial channel. The analysis chamber is connected to the housing, and is in fluid communication with the initial channel.

Biologic fluid analysis cartridge

A biological fluid sample analysis cartridge is provided that includes a collection port and a body. The body has one or more internal channels in selective fluid communication with the collection port. The collection port includes a collection bowl, and a slide valve assembly operable to be selectively positioned in an open position and a closed position. In the open position, the collection bowl is accessible for sample deposition, and in the closed position the collection bowl is inaccessible for sample deposition.

An apparatus and method for imaging a biologic fluid sample quiescently residing within a chamber is provided. The chamber includes a first panel and a second panel, between which the biologic fluid sample quiescently resides. At least one of the first and second panels is flexible. The chamber has one or more fields that are each defined by a cross-sectional area. The apparatus comprises a field illuminator, a chamber flattener, a positioner, and an image dissector. The field illuminator has an objective lens. The chamber flattener has a platen with a window and a cover plate. The chamber flattener is operable to cause the chamber to assume a substantially uniform Z-axis position for substantially all of the fields within the chamber. The positioner is adapted to position the objective lens and the chamber relative to one another. The image dissector is adapted to image the sample residing within the chamber.

Method and apparatus for securing planar orientation of analysis chamber

A technique for sealing a printhead of an ink jet printer system on startup, opening the seal to print, and opening further on an arbitrary path for service, is provided for by the present invention. The ink jet printhead has an ink drop generator, a catcher located adjacent to the ink drop generator, and a catcher pan located below the catcher. An eyelid seals ink within the printhead on startup of the printer system. An actuator mechanism transmits movement to the eyelid along a predetermined path, having multiple positions for the eyelid. The eyelid is moved between open and closed positions by means of a dc motor. The open position is defined by the actuator means contacting a print position stop. Shifting the position of the print position stop allows the eyelid to open to a service position.

Eyelid with mechanically driven service position override

An eyelid positioning technique is provided for an ink jet printer to precisely position the eyelid relative to the catcher to properly seal the print head. The eyelid seals against the catcher to contain ink within the printhead on startup and shutdown of the printer system. An eyelid actuator assembly moves the eyelid into a sealed position for startup and shutdown and into an open position for print, so that ink jets can exit an array of orifices and pass between the catcher and the eyelid to print on a print media. At least one alignment flexure capability allows for precise positioning of the eyelid relative to the catcher or the drop generator during assembly of the printer system.

Eyelid positioning

A system for flushing ink residue from a fluid system is provided for use with a continuous ink jet print station. Ink is rapidly drained from the fluid system, and the fluid system is refilled with a flush fluid. The flow of flush fluid is directed through all fluid system components which normally contain ink. Subsequently, the flow of flush fluid can be diverted to a waste tank rather than re-circulated into the ink tank.

In an ink jet printer having a printhead and a printhead docking station, an improvement is provided in installation and retention of the printhead in the printhead docking station. Straight line travel of the printhead relative to the printhead docking station is ensured using guide posts or other guiding mechanisms. Non-abrupt actuation, such as a screw drive actuator is used to translate the printhead relative to the docking station. The screw drive actuator is oriented at near right angles to the direction of translation of the printhead relative to the printhead docking station. The printhead and the printhead docking station are then aligned so that electrical and fluid connections can be made concurrently. During the installation, a consistent insertion force, such as a spring loaded toggle mechanism, is applied to the printhead, regardless of part tolerances.

Retaining and installing a printhead in a printhead docking station

A method and self-configuring structure are provided for optimizing state and state sequencing in ink jet printing system operation. A plurality of operating states are defined and assembled into at least one operating sequence. A conditional test is applied to the defined operating state. Execution flow can then be changed based on results of the conditional test. Finally, the defined operating states and assembled sequences are organized into an interpretable document.

State and sequence control in ink jet printing systems

A system and method are provided for cleaning the printhead of a continuous ink jet printing system. A cleaning fluid is introduced and used to flush ink residues and debris from the interior of the drop generator, the exterior of the orifice plate, the charge plate face and the catcher face. This system and method removes dried ink residues and other debris and deposits by providing a cleaning fluid with a low surface tension to dissolve or flush away the unwanted material from the orifices. This is particularly advantageous in that the flushing and rinsing is accomplished without mechanical contact which could abrade or damage the orifices.

The ink jet printhead has an ink drop generator, a catcher located adjacent to the ink drop generator, and a catcher pan located below the catcher. An actuator mechanism transmits movement to the eyelid along a predetermined non-circular path, having multiple positions for the eyelid. A multiple bar linkage system moves the eyelid along the path.

Ink jet printhead with an improved eyelid system

An alignment apparatus and method is provided for attaching and aligning components of an ink jet printhead of a continuous ink jet printer. First and second bonding surfaces are provided on first and second components, respectively, of the ink jet printhead. The first and second components are then aligned and attached. The attaching can be accomplished by applying an adhesive, which may also incorporate a chemical accelerator, or by distributing an adhesive from a central region of the bonding surfaces to create an adhesive bond between the first and second bonding surfaces.
