A turbomachinery component of a gas turbine engine is disclosed having a number of techniques of reducing the effects of a gap flow between an airfoil member of the gas turbine engine and a wall of the gas turbine engine. The airfoil member can be variable and in one form is a variable turbine vane. In one embodiment a brush seal is included between the vane and the wall. In another form a wear surface is disposed between the vane and the wall. In yet another form a moveable member capable of being actuated to change position can be disposed between the vane and the wall to alter the size of a gap between the two.

Gas turbine engine vane end devices

A seal assembly is disclosed for sealing a high pressure fluid cavity from a low pressure fluid cavity. The cavities are at least partially disposed between a rotatable shaft and a sump housing. The seal assembly comprises a circumferential runner and a seal ring. The circumferential runner is carried by the shaft and has a radially outward facing seal surface extending axially along the shaft. The seal ring is sealing engaged with the sump housing and has a radially inward facing seal surface that sealingly engages the radially outward facing seal surface of the runner. The runner and the seal ring are formed from materials having coefficients of thermal expansion that are matched to effect sealing engagement between the runner and the seal ring over a predetermined range of operating temperatures.

Circumferential archbound carbon seal on ceramic runner

An intershaft seal assembly comprises an annular seal ring disposed between a pair of annular runners connected to a hollow outer rotating shaft, and a surface of a co-axial inner rotating shaft. The centrifugal force resulting from rotation of the hollow outer rotating shaft effects engagement of the annular seal ring with the surface of the co-axial inner rotating shaft. The surface may be a radially-inward-facing surface of a retaining arm connected to the co-axial inner rotating shaft.

Intershaft seal assembly

A circumferential seal for a rotating machine having a ceramic runner and support system is provided. The circumferential seal may comprise a sealing runner having a radially inward facing surface and a mounting element. The mounting element may comprise a radial pilot, an axial flange, an isolating element, a spring element to provide an axially clamping force to the runner, and a support ring extending axially along a shaft a distance greater than the radially inward facing surface of the runner.

Ceramic seal runner support system

A flow splitter includes a stepped ring and a flow restriction. The stepped ring includes a first inner wall having a first diameter, a second inner wall having a second diameter less than the first diameter, a radial step that transitions from the first to the second inner wall, and a plurality of apertures circumferentially located along the first inner wall and partially through the radial step. The first flow restriction has at least a portion thereof at a position between the first diameter and the second diameter. Further, the first flow restriction directs a flow of at least one of a gas and a fluid towards the first inner wall, and is configured to split the flow into an exit flow and a secondary flow. The exit flow exits the stepped ring via the plurality of apertures and the secondary flow proceeds downstream directed by the second inner walls.

A seal assembly for use in a gas turbine engine includes a first component, a second component, and a sealing unit. The first component is spaced apart from the second component to form a gap therebetween. The sealing unit is positioned in the gap between the first and second components to block liquids and/or gasses from traveling through the gap.

Seals for a gas turbine engine

A circumferential sealing arrangement is disclosed herein. The circumferential sealing arrangement includes a seal runner operable to be fixed to a structure for concurrent rotation with the structure about an axis. The circumferential sealing arrangement also includes a housing that encircles the seal runner or is encircled by the seal runner. The circumferential sealing arrangement also includes a primary seal element at least partially disposed in the housing. The primary seal element includes a first surface cooperating with a second surface of the seal runner to form a circumferential seal between the primary seal element and the seal runner. The circumferential sealing arrangement also includes a secondary seal element positioned between the housing and the primary seal element on a first side of the primary seal element along the axis of rotation. A second side of the primary seal element along the axis of rotation opposite the first side seals against the housing. The secondary seal element generates a biasing force along the axis of rotation urging the second side against the housing.

Circumferential sealing arrangement

A lubricant scoop is disclosed herein. The lubricant scoop comprises an annular body encircling a central axis. The annular body is operable to rotate about the central axis in a first direction. The lubricant scoop also comprises a plurality of lubricant passageways defined in the annular body. Each of the plurality of passageways extends radially inward toward the central axis from respective entry ports to respective exit ports. The lubricant scoop also comprises an entry plenum defined in the annular body. The entry plenum is upstream of and fluidly communicates with each of the plurality of passageways. The entry plenum has an upstream opening operable to receive lubricant from a lubricant spray nozzle.

Lubricant scoop

A lubrication scavenge system is disclosed herein. The lubrication scavenge system includes a sump housing substantially encircling a structure disposed for rotation about an axis. The sump housing has an inwardly-facing surface extending at least partially about the axis in a spiral path. The spiral path increases in radial distance from the axis in the direction of rotation of the structure, in a plane perpendicular to the axis. The spiral path extends 360&#xb0;.

Lubrication scavenge system

A circumferential sealing arrangement is disclosed herein. The circumferential sealing arrangement includes a structure operable to rotate about an axis and having a first surface facing radially outward. The circumferential sealing arrangement also includes a static housing circumscribing the rotatable structure. The circumferential sealing arrangement also includes at least one seal element connected to the static housing and having a second surface facing radially inward. The circumferential sealing arrangement also includes a seal runner rotatable with the structure and having a third surface facing radially outward. The third surface cooperates with the second surface to form a circumferential seal between the static housing and the rotatable structure. A radial gap is defined between the first surface of the rotatable structure and a fourth surface of the seal runner facing radially inward and opposing the first surface. The circumferential sealing arrangement also includes at least one resilient member disposed in the radial gap and operable to radially compress in response to a change in size of the radial gap to limit hoop stresses being generated in the seal runner.

A method and apparatus for scavenging lubricant is disclosed herein. In the invention, a rotating structure is encircled within a sump housing and subjected to lubrication. The sump housing collects high-momentum lubricant flow and low-momentum lubricant flow. The interior of the sump housing is separated into a plurality of chambers with at least one dynamic seal. The at least one dynamic seal extends between the sump housing and the rotating structure to isolate the high-momentum lubricant flow from the low-momentum lubricant flow.

A sump housing for scavenging lubricant is disclosed herein. The sump housing includes an outer wall defining a chamber. A lubricated structure operable to rotate can be disposed within the sump housing. The sump housing also includes an out-take for lubricant scavenging. The out-take extends across a chordal arc of the chamber. The out-take includes an upstream first portion of the outer wall diverging away from the chordal arc at a first rate. The out-take also includes a downstream second portion of the outer wall opposite the first portion. The second portion diverges away from the chordal arc toward the first portion at a second rate greater than said first rate to define a blunt wall facing the first portion for reducing the likelihood that windage will limit lubricant scavenging.
