Disclosed herein are techniques for measuring a reference beam and a corresponding returned beam from a target in a measurement system using a single sensor array. The system is configured such that the location of the reference beam is space apart from the location of the returned beam on the sensor array. A first set of sensor elements on the sensor array corresponding to the reference beam is dynamically activated based on a laser beam scanning control signal. The detection signal from the first set of sensor elements is used to determine a location and/or a pattern of the reference beam, which are then used to estimate a location and/or a pattern of the corresponding returned beam on the same sensor array and dynamically select and activate a second set of sensor elements on the sensor array based on the estimated location and/or pattern of the corresponding returned beam.

System and method for measuring reference and returned light beams in an optical system

Disclosed herein are techniques for affecting the resolution of an optical scanning system. More specifically, a receiver of the optical scanning system includes a set of photodetectors and an optical beam directing subsystem. The optical beam directing subsystem is configured to, in each scan step of a plurality of scan steps, receive light reflected from a target region illuminated by a scanning beam and including a plurality of areas, and direct light reflected from each area of the plurality of areas to a corresponding photodetector in the set of photodetectors. Each photodetector of the set of photodetectors receives light reflected from a corresponding area of the plurality of areas to generate a detection signal.

Resolution enhancement for scanning LIDAR/LADAR

Disclosed herein are techniques for light beam scanning in a light detection and ranging (LIDAR) system. The LIDAR system includes a beam shaping subsystem configured to generate an illumination pattern elongated in a first direction, and a scanning subsystem configured to direct the elongated illumination pattern towards a plurality of positions along a second direction different from the first direction. The LIDAR system further includes a sensor configured to generate a detection signal in response to detecting light reflected by a target object illuminated by the elongated illumination pattern, and a processor configured to determine a characteristic of the target object based on the detection signal.

Hybrid scanning lidar systems

Disclosed herein are techniques for dynamically forming an optical component that automatically aligns with and changes positions with a scanning light beam to modify the wave front of the scanning light beam, such as collimating the scanning light beam. More specifically, a patterning beam that aligns with the scanning light beam may be scanned together with the scanning light beam to form the self-aligning and travelling optical component in an electro-optic material layer that is connected in serial with a photoconductive material layer to a voltage source, where the patterning beam optically modulates the impedance of the photoconductive material layer and therefore an electric field within the electro-optic material layer, the modulated electric field causing localized changes of refractive index in the electro-optic material layer to form the self-aligning and travelling optical component.

Example methods, systems, computer-readable media, and apparatuses for on-screen optical fingerprint capture for user authentication are presented. These allow for the authentication of a fingerprint where the fingerprint image is propagated in a glass layer before being captured by a camera. In some examples, such propagation can result in multiple fingerprint images resulting from total internal reflection within the glass layer. Feature information can then be determined from the captured image of the fingerprint, which can include multiple fingerprint images. The amount of feature information can then be reduced. A histogram associated with the captured image based on the reduced number of features can be generated, and a user can be authenticated based on the histogram.

On-screen optical fingerprint capture for user authentication

Methods, systems, computer-readable media, and apparatuses for cover-glass optical isolation for optical touch and fingerprint sensing are presented. One disclosed display assembly includes a cover glass layer; a low refractive index (LRI) layer coupled to a surface of the cover glass layer; a display layer coupled to the LRI layer; a prism structure; and a camera comprising an image sensor optically coupled to the prism structure to capture an image of a fingerprint based on light reflected from a fingertip and propagated within the cover glass layer and directed towards the camera using the prism structure, wherein the cover glass layer defines an overhang region that extends beyond the LRI layer and the display layer, and wherein the prism structure is coupled to the surface of the cover glass layer on the overhang region.

This disclosure provides systems, methods and apparatus related to biometric authentication of a user of an electronic device. An electronic display has a display cover glass with a front surface that includes a viewing area, and a fingerprint reading area within the viewing area. At least one photosensing element is configured to detect received scattered light, the received scattered light resulting from interaction of light with an object in at least partial optical contact with the front surface within the fingerprint reading area and to output, to a processor, fingerprint image data.

An interactive display, including a cover glass having a front surface that includes a viewing area provides an input/output (I/O) interface for a user of an electronic device. An arrangement includes a processor, a light source, and a camera disposed outside the periphery of the viewing area coplanar with or behind the cover glass. The camera receives scattered light resulting from interaction, with an object, of light outputted from the interactive display, the outputted light being received by the cover glass from the object and directed toward the camera. The processor determines, from image data output by the camera, an azimuthal angle of the object with respect to an optical axis of the camera and/or a distance of the object from the camera.

Methods, systems, computer-readable media, and apparatuses for outputting light are presented. A method includes outputting, via a propagation wave source and toward a field of view (FOV), at least one propagated wave at a first power, receiving, via a sensor, a reflection of the at least one propagated wave at the first power reflected off one or more objects within the FOV, classifying, via a processor, one or more areas within the FOV into safe areas and unsafe areas based at least in part on the received reflection of the propagated wave at the first power, wherein the safe areas are deemed to be safe to receive at least one propagated wave at a second power, and outputting, via the propagation wave source and toward the safe area, the at least one propagated wave at the second power. The first power may be a lower power than the second power.

System and method for multi-area LIDAR ranging

This disclosure relates to an interactive display, having a front surface including a viewing area, and providing an input/output interface for a user of an electronic device. A planar light guide (PLG) disposed substantially parallel to the front surface, has a periphery at least coextensive with the viewing area. A light-emitting source (LES), disposed outside the periphery of the PLG, is optically coupled with a PLG input. The PLG outputs reflected light, in a direction substantially orthogonal to the front surface, by reflecting light received from the LES. A light collecting device (LCD) collects scattered light that results from interaction of the reflected light with a user-controlled object. The LCD redirects the collected scattered light toward one or more light sensors. A processor recognizes, from outputs of the light sensors, an instance of a user gesture, and controls the interactive display and/or electronic device, responsive to the user gesture.

This disclosure provides systems, methods and apparatus related to touch and gesture recognition with an electronic interactive display. The interactive display has a front surface that includes a viewing area, a planar light guide disposed proximate to and behind the front surface, a light source, and at least one photo sensing element coupled with the first planar light guide. The planar light guide is configured to receive scattered light, the received scattered light resulting from interaction between light emitted by the light source and an object in optical contact with the front surface. The photo sensing element is configured to detect at least some of the received scattered light and to output, to a processor, image data. The processor is configured to recognize, from the image data, one or both of a contact pressure and a rotational orientation of the object.

Pressure, rotation and stylus functionality for interactive display screens

This disclosure provides systems, methods and apparatus for touch and gesture recognition, using a field sequential color display. The display includes a processor, a lighting system, and an arrangement for spatial light modulation that includes an array of light modulators. Each light modulator is switchable between an open position that permits transmittance of light from the lighting system through a respective aperture and a shut position that blocks light transmission through the respective aperture. The processor switches the light modulators in accordance with a first modulation scheme to render an image and in accordance with a second modulation scheme to selectively pass object illuminating light through at least one of the respective apertures. A light sensor receives light resulting from interaction of the object illuminating with an object and outputs a signal to the processor. The processor recognizes, from the output of the light sensor, a characteristic of the object.

Integration of a light collection light-guide with a field sequential color display

A touch and hover-sensitive sensor system is provided. The system may include a planar light guide that has a plurality of light sources located along a first edge of the light guide and a plurality of light sensors located along a second edge of the light guide orthogonal to the first edge. The light guide may include light-turning arrangements that are configured to redirect light passing through a first side of the light guide from/along orthogonal directions within the light guide. A controller may illuminate proper subsets of the light sources; light that is emitted from the first side and that encounters an object, e.g., a fingertip, may be reflected back into the first side and then redirected to the light sensors. Depending on the light sensors that detect the highest redirected reflected light intensity and the active light sources, the controller may determine the XY/XYZ location of the object.
