An internal dipole bowtie/meander antenna for a mobile terminal is capable of operating in two distinct RF bands. The antenna includes a resonating element and a ground element positioned on opposite sides of a dielectric material. The dielectric material is positioned generally perpendicular to a ground plane of the antenna. Tuning elements may be added to vary the coupling of the antenna elements to the ground plane.

Dual band bowtie/meander antenna

An antenna assembly has a shaft element with first and second ends. The antenna assembly also has a tube-like element disposed about the first end of the shaft element which tube-like element acts as a matching structure for the antenna assembly and strengthens and rigidifies the antenna assembly to resist bending of the shaft element proximate to the first end thereof. The antenna assembly further has a dielectric material disposed between the tube-like element and the shaft element at the first end. Moreover, the antenna assembly may be combined with a housing to form a radio-communication assembly, the housing having a surface with an edge, the tube-like element acting as a matching structure and strengthening and rigidifying the antenna assembly to resist bending of the shaft element at a fulcrum defined by the edge. Furthermore, a method reconfiguring an antenna on a radio-communication assembly is provided.

Radio frequency antenna

Radiotelephones having retractable antenna systems include an antenna, a housing with a transceiver and user interface disposed therein and a non-radiating antenna feed coupled to both the antenna and the transceiver. The non-radiating feed is movably mounted within and extendible from the housing so as to have an extended position and a retracted position. In one embodiment, the antenna is physically supported by the non-radiating feed and is thus mounted in an extended state when the non-radiating feed is in an extended position. and is mounted in a retracted state when the non-radiating feed is in the retracted position. Preferably, the antenna exhibits approximately the same electrical length in both the extended and retracted states, and the antenna is substantially isolated from the housing of the radiotelephone when the antenna is in the extended state.

A thin flexible antenna has radiating elements made of thin nickel-titanium, a highly flexible and rigid alloy. The radiating elements are covered with silicone elastomer dielectric layers that have suitable elongation properties to withstand extreme bending stresses outer jackets cover the antenna. The outer jackets have a textured exterior surface that evenly distributes the bending stresses across the antenna.

A termination contact for an antenna that has a Ni--Ti radiating element is formed by a layer of electrically conductive carbon filler disposed on the Ni--Ti radiating element. A conductive element is positioned on the layer of conductive carbon filler to provide electrical interface between the Ni--Ti radiating element and external RF circuitry. In to prevent contamination, a protective layer of silicon elastomer covers the conductive layer and the Ni--Ti radiating element such that a portion of the conductive element is exposed to provide a RF feed point.

A planar diversity antenna for communications devices, such as radiotelephones, has two radiating elements secured to opposite sides of a dielectric substrate. One radiating element is parasitically coupled to a fed radiating element to resonate at respective adjacent frequency bands. Each radiating element has a meandering electrically conductive path. The planar diversity antenna is maintained in spaced apart, generally parallel relationship with a ground plane within a radiotelephone.

The present invention provides an internal antenna for mobile terminals that provides performance comparable with externally mounted antennas. The antenna is of a looped dipole configuration wherein the resonating elements of the antenna are integrated within or located on an inside or outside surface of the terminal's housing. The looped-shaped resonating elements may be placed around other components of the phone without significantly infringing on precious, physical space. For example, the loop elements may be placed around the keypad, around the display, around any portion or outline of the housing, and in a flip portion hingeably engaging a main section of the housing. Preferably, the antenna is a two-sided, half-wave antenna having two rectangular-shaped loop dipole elements.

Flexible diversity antennas having gain and bandwidth capabilities suitable for use within small communications devices such as radiotelephones are provided. A core of flexible material has an electrical conductor embedded therewithin in a meandering pattern and is surrounded by a first layer of flexible dielectric material. At one end of the antenna, the first layer of dielectric material is surrounded by flexible conductive material. The flexible conductive material is surrounded by a second layer of flexible dielectric material. The portion of the antenna surrounded by conductive material serves as a tuning element, and the portion of the antenna not surrounded by conductive material serves as a radiating element. A flexible signal feed is integral with the antenna and extends outwardly from the flexible core.

Flexible diversity antenna

Antennas configured to be enclosed within a flip cover of a radiotelephone and to resonate in three frequency bands include a dielectric substrate having opposite first and second faces, and opposite first and second ends. A first radiating element is disposed on the first face adjacent the first end, and a second radiating element is disposed on the dielectric substrate second face adjacent the second end. Each radiating element tapers from a respective end of the substrate to a medial portion of a respective face. Each radiating element also includes a respective meandering electrically conductive path.
