A method for producing a base oil having a high ratio of weight percent molecules with monocycloparaffinic functionality to weight percent molecules with multicycloparaffinic functionality by hydroisomerization dewaxing a selected Fischer-Tropsch wax under hydroisomerization conditions including a hydrogen to feed ratio from about 712.4 to about 3562 liter H/liter oil.

A process for producing an API Group I base oil, comprising: blending a lower quality base oil that does not meet API Group I specifications with a Fischer-Tropsch derived distillate fraction having defined pour point, viscosity index and Oxidator B, and isolating an API Group I base oil that has improved defined properties. A process for producing an API Group I base oil, consisting essentially of: (a) selecting a lower quality base oil not meeting API Group I specifications, having defined saturates, viscosity index and Oxidator BN; and (b) blending the lower quality base oil with a Group II base oil and a Fischer-Tropsch derived base oil. We provide a base oil comprising hydrocarbons with consecutive numbers of carbon atoms. The base oil has a boiling range from 700 to 925&#xb0; F. (371 to 496&#xb0; C.), a VI from 105 to 119, and either a Noack volatility less than 18 wt % or a CCS VIS at &#x2212;25&#xb0; C. less than 1500 mPa&#xb7;s. The base oil may have a ratio of Noack Volatility to CCS VIS at &#x2212;25&#xb0; C. multiplied by 100 from 0.80 to 1.55.

A base oil slate comprising three or more base oil grades having kinematic viscosities at 100&#xb0; C. between about 1.8 cSt and about 30 cSt prepared from a waxy feed wherein each of the base oil grades is a base oil blend which comprises: (a) between about 0.1 wt. % and about 99.9 wt. % of a distillation fraction prepared in light block mode operation; and (b) between about 0.1 wt. % and about 99.9 wt. % of a distillation fraction prepared in medium block mode operation. An ashless lubricating oil, comprising a base oil having a viscosity index greater than 150, wherein the base oil is made from a blend of petroleum-based wax and Fischer-Tropsch derived wax.

Ashless hydraulic fluid or paper machine oil

A process to make a shock absorber fluid having improved performance properties, the properties including an air release after 1 minute by DIN 51381 of less than 0.8 vol %, a kinematic viscosity at 100&#xb0; C. less than 5 mm/s and an aniline point greater than or equal to 95&#xb0; C., or meeting the specifications for Kayaba 0304-050-0002 or VW TL 731 class A. The shock absorber fluid is made by blending a base oil having less than 10 wt % naphthenic carbon and a high viscosity index with low levels of (or no) viscosity index improver and pour point depressant.

Process for making shock absorber fluid

A method for predicting properties of lubricant base oil blends, comprising the steps of generating an NMR spectrum, HPLC-UV spectrum, and FIMS spectrum of a sample of a blend of at least two lubricant base oils and determining at least one composite structural molecular parameter of the sample from said spectrums. SIMDIST and HPO analyses of the sample are then generated in order to determine a composite boiling point distribution and molecular weight of the sample from such analysis. A composite structural molecular parameter is applied, and the composite boiling point distribution and the composite molecular weight to a trained neural network is trained to correlate with the composite structural molecular parameter composite boiling point distribution and the composite molecular weight so as to predict composite properties of the sample. The properties comprise Kinematic Viscosity at 40 C, Kinematic Viscosity at 100 C, Viscosity Index, Cloud Point, and Oxidation Performance.

Base oil properties expert system

A functional fluid comprising a base oil with a high viscosity index, wherein the functional fluid has a kinematic viscosity at 100&#xb0; C. between 2.5 and 5.0 mm/s, a low Brookfield viscosity, a high aniline point, and excellent air release. Shock absorber fluids with improved performance, comprising a particular base oil, wherein the improved performance includes high viscosity index, low Brookfield viscosity, high aniline point, excellent air release and high flash point.

A process to make a light base oil fraction having a wt % Noack volatility between 0 and 100 and additionally less than a Noack Volatility Factor (NVF), wherein the Noack Volatility Factor is defined by the equation: 900&#xd7;(Kinematic Viscosity at 100&#xb0; C.)&#x2212;15. The process comprises hydroisomerization dewaxing a waxy feed in a series of two or more reactors, and recovering the light base oil fraction having a low wt % Noack volatility.
