A convertible shoe having a shoe body and a shoe sole. An air channel formed in said shoe sole including pressurized air inlet and air exhaust. An elongated pocket or multiple individual pockets in the bottom of the shoe sole and along said air channel. A flexible wall portion between said air channel and pocket that expands into the pocket(s) upon pressurization of said air channel. A protrusion affixed to said flexible wall portion and which extends out of said pocket and into engagement with a support surface when said air channel is pressurized.

Convertible traction shoes

A tire in which a tire manufacturer has determined the tractive capacity at numerous levels of tread wear, the tire having at least one visual warning indicator located at a tread depth corresponding to a percentage loss of tractive capacity. Also, a method of making the tire and a method improving traffic safety through use of such a tire combined with educating the consumer as to proper use of the tire.

Method of making tire having wear indicators

A process for producing a tire having an expandable chamber utilized for extending and retracting studs provided in the periphery of the tire. In one embodiment, a non-stick film is strategically positioned between the casing and the tread prior to curing the tread onto the casing. The interface at either side of the film forms the sides of an expandable chamber. The tread side of the chamber is inset and studs are affixed thereto. Expansion of the chamber extends the studs out of the inset and into engagement with a road surface. Alternative processes provide a channel in the tread and the expansion chamber formed in the channel.

Process for creating expandable tire chamber

A four step process for removing vehicles from the public roadways having worn tires including (a) establishing a standard for end of life tire conditions, (b) converting the standard to relate correspondingly to tread wear, (c) providing a visual indication of end of life tread wear and (d) providing for inspection and vehicle disqualification where end of life tire wear is indicated.

Traction device for vehicle wheels

A tire as provided with a circumferential portion for contacting a road surface. Edge segments thereof include studs and an inflatable chamber at the edge segment is inflated and deflated to extend and withdraw the edge segments for engagement and disengagement with the road surface.

A traction device for vehicle wheels has an expandable and contractible member mounted next to the vehicle wheel. The traction device has a tire with extending studs that is expandable by air pressure to increase the diameter of the tire. The tire is contracted by releasing the pressurized air within. The tire is expanded to a diameter just larger than the vehicle wheels so that the studs will engage the roadway to provide traction. The tire may be inflated manually from a pressurized air source and deflated manually. A pressure source and control valves may be provided to control the inflation and deflation of the tire remotely.

A traction device for vehicle wheels has tread segments that are expandable and contractible by secondary inflatable chambers to place studs either in engagement or out of engagement with a road surface. Alternatively, stud bearing tread segments are removably mounted between segments of conventional tread.
