Silane compositions having an aromatic functionality and a ethylenically functionality and comprising a latent acid catalyst are deposited in two or more layers on a substrate. Each layer differs in light absorption properties from an adjacent layer. Some layers may have different curing mechanisms. Such a method is useful in forming antireflective coatings.

A calixarene bisphosphite composition for use as a ligand in a transition metal-ligand complex catalyst and in a complex catalyst precursor. The ligand is especially useful in catalysts and catalyst precursors for hydroformylation processes wherein a raffinate stream comprising a mixture of alpha, beta, and iso-olefinic isomers is hydroformylated in the presence of carbon monoxide, hydrogen, and the transition metal-ligand complex catalyst to form a mixture of linear and branched aldehyde products. The complex catalyst selectively converts the alpha and beta olefin reactants more rapidly than the iso-olefin reactant resulting in an improved molar ratio of normal (linear) to branched aldehyde products. The unconverted iso-olefinic isomer is thereafter readily separated from the aldehyde product mixture.

Calixarene bisphosphite ligand for use in hydroformylation processes

Integrated processes of preparing industrial chemicals starting from seed oil feedstock compositions containing one or more unsaturated fatty acids or unsaturated fatty acid esters, which are essentially free of metathesis catalyst poisons, particularly hydroperoxides; metathesis of the feedstock composition with a lower olefin, such as ethylene, to form a reduced chain olefin, preferably, a reduced chain &#x3b1;-olefin, and a reduced chain unsaturated acid or ester, preferably, a reduced chain &#x3b1;,&#x3c9;-unsaturated acid or ester. The reduced chain unsaturated acid or ester may be (trans)esterified to form a polyester polyolefin, which may be epoxidized to form a polyester polyepoxide. The reduced chain unsaturated acid or ester may be hydroformylated with reduction to produce an &#x3b1;,&#x3c9;-hydroxy acid or &#x3b1;,&#x3c9;-hydroxy ester, which may be (trans)esterified with a polyol to form an &#x3b1;,&#x3c9;-polyester polyol. Alternatively, the reduced chain unsaturated acid or ester may be hydroformylated with reductive amination to produce an &#x3b1;,&#x3c9;-amino acid or &#x3b1;,&#x3c9;-amino ester, which may be (trans)esterified to form an &#x3b1;,&#x3c9;-polyester polyamine.

Integrated chemical processes for industrial utilization of seed oils

Processes are disclosed for the oxidation of alkanes such as, for example, propane, to form unsaturated carboxylic aldehydes and acids such as, for example, acrolein and acrylic acid. The processes utilize oxygen and recycle alkanes, e.g. propane, to the aldehyde reactor. The presence of the alkane-to-aldehyde reaction can enhance the efficiency of the processes.

Separation processes

This invention relates in part to processes for producing one or more substituted or unsubstituted epsilon caprolactones and/or hydrates and/or esters thereof which comprise subjecting one or more substituted or unsubstituted penten-1-ols to carbonylation in the presence of a carbonylation catalyst, e.g., a metal-organophosphorus ligand complex catalyst, to produce said one or more substituted or unsubstituted epsilon caprolactones and/or hydrates and/or esters thereof. The substituted and unsubstituted epsilon caprolactones and/or hydrates and/or esters thereof produced by the processes of this invention can undergo further reaction(s) to afford desired derivatives thereof, e.g., epsilon caprolactam. This invention also relates in part to reaction mixtures containing one or more substituted or unsubstituted epsilon caprolactones and/or hydrates and/or esters thereof as principal product(s) of reaction.

Processes for producing epsilon caprolactones and/or hydrates and/or esters thereof

This invention relates to a process for separating one or more products from a reaction product fluid comprising a metal-organophosphorus ligand complex catalyst, optionally free organophosphorus ligand, said one or more products, one or more nonpolar reaction solvents and one or more polar reaction solvents, wherein said process comprises (1) subjecting said reaction product fluid to fractional countercurrent extraction with at least two immiscible extraction solvents, said at least two immiscible extraction solvents comprising at least one nonpolar extraction solvent and at least one polar extraction solvent, to obtain a nonpolar phase comprising said metal-organophosphorus ligand complex catalyst, said optionally free organophosphorus ligand, said one or more nonpolar reaction solvents and said at least one nonpolar extraction solvent and a polar phase comprising said one or more products, said one or more polar reaction solvents and said at least one polar extraction solvent, and (2) recovering said polar phase from said nonpolar phase; wherein (i) the organophosphorus ligand has a partition coefficient Kp1 defined herein between the nonpolar phase and the polar phase of greater than about 5, and (ii) the one or more products have a partition coefficient Kp2 defined herein between the nonpolar phase and the polar phase of less than about 2.0.

The processes utilize oxygen and recycle propane to the acrolein reactor. Process feeds can comprise, propane, propylene or mixtures thereof. The presence of propane in the propylene-to-acrolein reaction can enhance the efficiency of the processes.

This invention relates in part to processes for producing one or more substituted or unsubstituted epsilon caprolactams, e.g., epsilon caprolactam, which comprises: (a) subjecting one or more substituted or unsubstituted alkadienes to hydroxycarbonylation in the presence of a hydroxycarbonylation catalyst, e.g., a metal-organophosphorus ligand complex catalyst, and neutralization with a base to produce one or more substituted or unsubstituted pentenoic acid salts; (b) subjecting said one or more substituted or unsubstituted pentenoic acid salts to hydroformylation in the presence of a hydroformylation catalyst, e.g., a metal-organophosphorus ligand complex catalyst, to produce one or more substituted or unsubstituted formylvaleric acid salts and/or one or more substituted or unsubstituted epsilon caprolactam precursors; and (c) subjecting said one or more substituted or unsubstituted formylvaleric acid salts and/or said one or more substituted or unsubstituted epsilon caprolactam precursors to reductive amination in the presence of a reductive amination catalyst and cyclization optionally in the presence of a cyclization catalyst to produce said one or more substituted or unsubstituted epsilon caprolactams. Processes for producing epsilon caprolactams

The present invention provides a hydroformylation process comprising: (1) forming a reaction mixture containing: (a) an olefinic compound, (b) hydrogen, (c) carbon monoxide, (d) a phosphite in which each phosphorus atom is bonded to three oxygen atoms and at least one such oxygen atom is bonded to a carbon atom of an aromatic ring that is adjacent to another carbon atom of said ring having a pendant monovalent group having a steric hindrance at least as great as the steric hindrance of the isopropyl group, (e) a catalytic amount of rhodium, and (f) a Group VIII metal (other than a rhodium) in an amount sufficient to reduce the rhodium-catalyzed decomposition of the phosphite during the hydroformylation process; and (2) maintaining the reaction mixture under conditions at which the olefinic compound reacts with the hydrogen and carbon monoxide to form an aldehyde.
