A media player is provided. The media player comprises a communications interface, a memory store containing a plurality of personalized advertisements, and a media playback component. The targeted advertisements are refreshed by receiving updates from the communications interface during some of the intervals when the media player is connected to a network. The targeted advertisements are indexed by a plurality of characteristics, the first characteristic being a creation date of the targeted advertisements. The media playback component is configured to play a media content, wherein the media content is stored separately from the targeted advertisements, and to play one of the targeted advertisements in the memory store selected based on the characteristics of the one of the targeted advertisements.

A multi-mode mobile station includes a first interface for communicating with a first wireless network, such as a wireless wide area network (WWAN), and a second interface for communicating with a second wireless network, such as a wireless local area network (WLAN). While the multi-mode mobile station has a first connection with the first wireless network, the multi-mode mobile station establishes a second connection with the second wireless network. When the second connection is established, the second wireless network transmits an acknowledgement signal to the multi-mode mobile station. In response to the acknowledgment signal, the multi-mode mobile station disables the first connection with the first wireless network and powers down the first interface.

A processor-implemented method of accessing content is provided comprising a server composing a first list of broadcast content, wherein each entry in the first list comprises a link to access a broadcast content associated with the entry. The method also comprises the server composing a second list of stored content, wherein each entry in the second list comprises a link to access a stored content associated with the entry, and the server dynamically aggregating entries from the first list and the second list to compose a content guide. The method further comprises presenting at least a portion of the content guide on a display, wherein at least one entry from the first list and at least one entry from the second list are present at the same time on the display, and presenting content on the display based on selecting an entry from the guide.

A method is provided for blending device-based recommendations. A request is received from a device to recommend a group activity for a plurality of individuals. A plurality of device user profiles is accessed, each device user profile associated with one of the individuals. At least one group activity is recommended based on applying a plurality of rules to the device user profiles. The at least one recommended group activity is output to the device.

Blending device-based recommendations

A wireless device includes a self-activation client that allows a user to activate a communication service for that wireless device and for one or more other wireless devices. The communication service may use a long-range type of wireless communication, such as 1&#xd7;RTT CDMA, EV-DO, GSM, or IEEE 802.16 (WiMAX) communication. During the activation process, the wireless device communicates with a device management server using the long-range type of wireless communication but communicates with the one or more other wireless devices using a short-range type of wireless communication, such as IEEE 802.11 (WiFi), Bluetooth, or infrared communication. After the communication service has been activated, the wireless device may subsequently communicate with the device management server in order to manage the communication service for itself and/or for one or more other wireless devices (e.g., to receive updates or to make changes).

Method and system for managing wireless devices using short-range wireless communication

A portable electronic device is provided comprising a processor, a memory, a display, and an application stored in the memory that, when executed by the processor, initiates a plurality of user agents that each indicate a different communication point. The portable electronic device also transmits a request for a content from each of the user agents to a content source, the requests being transmitted substantially concurrently. The portable electronic device also receives a plurality of contents, each content associated with one of the user agents and each content formatted differently than the remaining contents. The portable electronic also presents one of the contents on the display, wherein the portable electronic device promotes concurrent downloading of a content in multiple formats from the content source.

An application repository is provided. The application repository comprises a first computer having a processor and a memory, a data store, a plurality of applications stored in the data store, and a billing apportionment module stored in the memory. Each application contains an instruction to invoke a run-time license tracking application programming interface (API), the plurality of applications comprising a first application. The billing apportionment module, when executed by the processor, receives a first run-time license tracking report generated by invocation of the run-time license tracking application programming interface by the first application executing on one of a second computer and a mobile electronic device, determines a first application usage fee to bill to an account associated with a user of the first application, bills the first application usage fee to the account associated with a user of the first application, determines a first usage fee share based in part on the first application usage fee and on the first run-time tracking report, and transfers the first usage fee share to an account associated with the first application.

A communications device dynamic interface system is provided. The system comprises an at least one communications device and a dynamic interface application, that when executed on the at least one communications device, arranges a plurality of selectable, viewable panes in a virtual carousel format. The system also displays at least one of data and interactive content within the panes, the data and interactive content received from external sources. The system also changes the viewing sequence of the panes on demand and places less frequently viewed panes in a background area of the interface. The system also archives panes not viewed for a predetermined period of time and deletes panes not viewed for a predetermined period of time.

A wireless access system comprises a base station and a control system. The base station wirelessly broadcasts a pilot signal including a network access provider identifier that identifies a wireless video service. The base station wirelessly receives a wireless video uplink request from a wireless video device in response to the pilot signal. The control system processes reservation data for the base station to determine if the wireless video device has a current wireless video uplink reservation and directs the base station to provide a wireless video uplink to the wireless video device if the wireless video device has the current wireless video uplink reservation. The base station wirelessly receives video data from the wireless video device over the wireless video uplink as directed by the control system.

The method comprises a mobile electronic device establishing a data connection to a content source, a gateway creating a record comprising information related to the data connection and providing the record to a server, and the server charging the content source for the data connection and providing at least a part of the record to the content source.

Content provider sponsored data services system and methods

A multi-mode mobile station includes a first interface for wireless communication with a wireless local area network (WLAN) and a second interface for wireless communication with a wireless wide area network (WWAN). A call control system routes all calls to and from the multi-mode mobile station through a media gateway that serves as an anchor point for handoffs between the WLAN and WWAN. For example, while involved in a call that has a WLAN call leg from the media gateway, the multi-mode mobile transmits a handoff request. The call control system then establishes a WWAN call leg from the media gateway, and the multi-mode mobile station stores in a buffer any media received via the WWAN call leg. The call control system subsequently transmits a handoff instruction to the multi-mode mobile station. In response, the multi-mode mobile station plays out the stored media and drops the WLAN call leg.

Methods and products for providing an item of content to a mobile device in a prepaid context by way of a wireless telecommunications network are provided. One embodiment of a method includes receiving an indication that the item of content is desired to be communicated to a mobile device (which is associated with a certain customer); determining that the customer obtains wireless-telecommunications services by way of either a piecemeal plan or a recurring-fees plan; when the customer is associated with the piecemeal plan, determining that a remaining amount of the prepaid balance is insufficient to pay for the desired content (and thereby triggering a first follow-up process); and when the customer is associated with the recurring plan, determining that an immediate-payment option does not exist (and thereby triggering a second follow-up process).

Providing an item of content to a mobile device in a prepaid context

A method and system for providing connections from a wireless access point. The wireless access point has multiple VPN tunnels. The access point detects a wireless-network identifier (such as a service set identifier (SSID)) provided by a terminal via an air interface, and the access point uses the wireless-network identifier as a basis to select one of the VPN tunnels. The access point then sends communication from the terminal via the selected VPN tunnel.

The number of items is displayed based on the numerical position on a list selected for display. A system is provided for widget to widget communication. The system includes a first device, a second device, and a communication server. The first device and/or the second device are a mobile device. The communication server provides a first widget to the first device and provides a second widget to the second device, wherein the first widget and the second widget are portable code that is installed and executed in a corresponding runtime environment without additional compilation. The first widget, when executed by the first device, communicates information that identifies content associated with the first widget and a state of the content via the first device to the communication server. The communication server communicates the information and the state to the second device. The second widget, when executed by the second device, presents at least some of the content based on the information and the state in coordination with the first widget presenting the content.
