A system for multiplexing multiple independent signals includes a transmitter, interconnecting medium, and a receiver. The transmitter encodes a waveform with first and second pieces of information for transmission across the interconnecting medium. The receiver determines the first and second pieces of information using the duty cycle and frequency of the waveform.

System for multiplexing independent signals

A removable vehicle entertainment system is provided. The system includes a video display screen for displaying entertainment to an occupant of the vehicle. The system can be removed from the docking bracket in the vehicle, and attached to an external docking station such that the system can be used independently of the power supply and speakers of the vehicle. Further, the system can be used as a self-contained personal entertainment system. The system includes mechanical and/or electrical componentry that determines the orientation of the video display screen, and allows the electronics of the system to display an image on the screen in an appropriate orientation, thus avoiding upside-down images in the various uses of the system.

Removable vehicle entertainment system

An automotive multimedia entertainment system includes an integrated rear seat entertainment module in which audio signals coordinated with video entertainment devices in the rear seat can be reproduced using the vehicle's audio system. Multiplex control signals between an audio main control unit, rear seat entertainment module, and CD disc jockey allows free selection of sources for single and dual play modes. By sharing an external audio input of the main control unit, between the rear seat entertainment module and the CD disc jockey, a single version of the main control unit can be used in vehicles either with or without rear seat entertainment modules or CD disc jockeys.

A method and apparatus for determining the connection status of a communication system speaker connection to the amplifier includes digital signal processing (DSP) circuitry contained in the system receiving a clip detect feedback loop from the amplifier in response to a tone signal delivered to the amplifier from the DSP microprocessor. Preferably, the diagnosis is initiated by actuation of a predetermined plurality of controllers on a face control unit, each of which is otherwise actuated individually to control portions of the communication system. Preferably, a tone signal generated for diagnosis is generally inaudible to the human ear but the front control unit includes a display screen for illustrating the condition of the speaker-to-amplifier connection after the diagnostic function has been completed.
