An instrument incorporating a refractometer for measuring parameters of a fluid such as a metalworking fluid, avoids impairment of measurement accuracy due to contact of entrained air and oil with a refractometer window by temporarily interrupting the flow of the fluid through a refractometer chamber and orienting the window so that air and oil will readily separate from the window during the interruption of flow. Continued flow of metalworking flow while refractive index measurements are taken can be achieved by the use of by-pass valving arrangements.

Measurement of fluid parameters

In an effort in solving the difficulties with cleaning cationic metal processing fluids and/or emulsions, processes for cleaning a metal processing fluid which is substantially free of fatty acids is provided herein and includes treating the metal processing fluid with dissolved air floatation. Also provided are processes for deforming metals and removing suspended foreign matter from a contaminated metal processing fluid and/or emulsions which are substantially free of fatty acids is provided and include the use of DAF technology. In one embodiment, the process is performed in the absence of a filter. In another embodiment, the process is performed in the absence of a filter which is capable of removing suspended foreign material in the contaminated metal processing fluid.

Dissolved air flotation use with cationic metal processing fluids

A process for recycling aqueous quenching fluids, said process comprising: (a)(1) providing a metal quenching bath tank comprising a used metal aqueous quenching fluid containing contamination with a water insoluble, fire resistant hydraulic fluid; or (a)(2) collecting, in a collection tank in association with a quench barrel or quench ring, used metal aqueous quenching fluid after the fluid has been sprayed onto heated metal, wherein the collected used fluid is contaminated with a water insoluble, fire resistant hydraulic fluid; (b) heating the bath tank (a)(1) or collection tank (a)(2) to a temperature of about 105 to 200 &#xb0; F. with agitation for less than 12 hours; (c) recovering a resulting uncontaminated aqueous quenching phase from a lower portion of the bath tank (a)(1) or collection tank (a)(2); and (d) returning the recovered aqueous quenching phase to a functional quenching bath tank or functional quenching spray tank.

Component recovery from metal quenching bath or spray

Processes for die casting metals are provided, which are more energy efficient and less expensive than the current metal die casting processes. The die casting processes discussed herein utilize a water-soluble die release fluid and hydraulic equipment which uses water-insoluble hydraulic fluid. By doing so, the hydraulic fluid and die release fluid present in the waste collected from the die casting process can be collected via separation techniques. One or both of the collected hydraulic fluid and die release fluid may then be re-used in the same die casting process, another die casting process, or other processes altogether.

Methods for die casting metals using phase separable fluids

The invention provides the combined use of UF and MVR for the treatment of industrial process fluid wastewater that contains recoverable material. The recoverable material desirably has a molecular diameter of less than about 5 to 6 nm and a boiling point of less than about 200 &#xb0; C. In one embodiment, the recoverable material may then be utilized in the preparation of another industrial process fluid. In another embodiment, the recoverable material is isolated and retained for later use. The invention thereby provides aqueous industrial process fluid which contains water; one or more of an emulsifier, oil, amine, biocide, thickener, lubricant, dispersant, antioxidant, corrosion inhibitor, alkaline compound, surfactant, and carrier; and one or more chemical compounds recovered from aqueous industrial process fluid wastewater treated with UF and MVR.

A process (50) is provided that operates to convey a contaminated oil/water emulsion metalworking fluid (2) under pressure through an ultrafilter membrane (12) to separate a substantial amount of oil (14) therefrom that is then emulsified with a predetermined amount of water having an electrical volume resistivity of at least about 3000 ohm-cm to provide a reconditioned oil/water emulsion for use as a metalworking fluid.

Method and apparatus are provided for machining processes involving the generation of frictional heat in which the workpiece is contacted by a coolant whose viscosity progressively increases with decreasing temperature and by a pressurized fluid that, upon expansion while undergoing a reduction in pressure, absorbs heat and cools the coolant and increases its viscosity to provide a consistency that enhances its lubricity to minimize the generation of frictional heat during the machining process while enhancing conductive heat transfer into the machining tool.

Machining and apparatus

Processes are provided for cleaning metal in preparation for painting, coating, welding or other subsequent process. The processes all include rinsing the metal with a solution of deionized water and a water soluble amine having a vapor pressure of at least about 10% of the vapor pressure of water at 20.degree. C. resulting in an essentially residue and water spot free surface promoting welding and bonding of the paint or coating thereto as well as enhancing other subsequent processes that may be scheduled therefore.

Metal cleaning process

A cleaning process is provided that is particularly advantageous for removing oil or oil-like material from porous parts such as porous internal combustion engine components such as valves. The process utilizes oil solubilizing solvents as well as alkaline soap and water solutions and mixtures of water soluble amines and water or deionized water in conjunction with alternate pressure and vacuum cycling to effect the cleaning.

Disclosed is a process for removing foreign matter and tramp oil from a continuously recirculating metal working fluid. The process includes the use of saturated dissolved air flotation which, contrary to prior belief, is able to effectively remove the foreign matter and tramp oil in a quiescent manner with little or no foaming and without removing or harming any emulsions present in the metal working fluid. The process further includes the use of water soluble organic cationic and anionic polyelectrolytes where desired to flocculate the foreign matter and tramp oil to enhance their removal from the metal working fluid and a process by which the formation of foam at or near the surface of the metal working fluid being clarified is able to be suppressed.
