A turbine assembly including a turbine stationary component, which includes an inner ring and a packing segment positioned relative to the inner ring such that a steam joint is defined therebetween. The packing segment defines a groove open to the steam joint, a first seal face within the groove and opposite from the portion open to the steam joint, and a second seal face within the groove and adjacent to the first seal face. An inserted ring includes a body having a first face, a second face adjacent to the first face, and a third face opposite from the first face. The first face is positioned in close proximity to the first seal face of the packing segment, the second face is positioned in close proximity to the second seal face of the packing segment, and the third face is positioned in close proximity to the inner ring.

A method of forming an erosion shield for a turbine blade includes depositing a layer of filler material defining an upper surface. The method also includes depositing a layer of erosion-resistant material across the upper surface of the layer of filler material. An interface is defined between the layer of filler material and the layer of erosion-resistant material and has a shape of the upper surface. The method also includes machining the layer of filler material to produce the erosion shield. The erosion shield has the layer of erosion-resistant material, the machined layer of filler material, and the interface defined therebetween. An inner surface of the erosion shield is defined by the machined layer of filler material that is sized and shaped for attaching to a leading edge of the turbine blade. Each of the interface and the inner surface extend a length of the erosion shield.

A block assembly for locking a toothed gear housed in a frame includes a body shaped to couple to a portion of the frame adjacent to the gear for translation in a first direction parallel to an axis of the gear, and a locking block coupled to the body that includes at least one locking tooth shaped complementary to at least one gear tooth of the gear. The block assembly further includes an adjustment mechanism operable, when the body is coupled to the frame, to move the locking block in a second direction that is substantially orthogonal the axis of the gear, such that at least one locking tooth is received between a circumferentially spaced pair of the gear teeth to prevent movement of the toothed gear.

Various embodiments include a system for machining a hole in a turbine blade. The system can include: a mount for engaging a first side of a turbine rotor, the mount including: a drill plate for coupling with the first side of the turbine rotor, the drill plate having: a body; a feed opening on a first side of the body; a passage extending from the feed opening through the body; and a second opening on a second side of the body, the second opening coupled with the passage and positioned to align with the pre-formed hole in the turbine rotor; an alignment bushing for engaging the pre-formed hole in the rotor at a second side of the rotor; and a cutting device for extending through the body and alignment bushing, the cutting device for machining the hole in the blade, the cutting device aligned along a chamfer axis relative to a primary axis of the turbine rotor.

In one embodiment, an induction temper system for a turbine includes: an induction member; a control system operably connected to the induction coil; and a temperature sensor operably connected with the control system, wherein the control system is configured to control an electrical current supplied induction member in response to a temperature indicator about a component of the turbine obtained from the temperature sensor.

This disclosure describes embodiments of a method of repairing a diaphragm found in a turbine, and a diaphragm assembly resulting from the same, that does not require welds in between the partitions. The method inserts a replacement part in place of certain machine-removed portions of the existing partitions on the diaphragm. The replacement part includes coupons that work in combination with the remaining portions of the partitions to form the aerodynamic shape of the original partitions.

Method for repairing a turbine diaphragm and diaphragm assembly resulting therefrom

A turbine diaphragm airfoil, a turbine diaphragm assembly employing such an airfoil, and a method of repair are described. In one embodiment, a turbine diaphragm airfoil includes: a composite airfoil body which includes a pressure side and a suction side, the composite airfoil including: a leading edge section forming a portion of each of the pressure side and the suction side; and a trailing edge section integral with the leading edge section, the trailing edge section including: a prefabricated member affixed to the leading edge section, the prefabricated member forming a remainder of the pressure side of the composite airfoil body; and a weld or braze section contacting the leading edge section and the prefabricated member, the weld or braze section forming a remainder of the suction side of the composite airfoil body.

An apparatus is provided comprising a base frame having a turntable, and a vertical section configured to be mounted on the turntable via a slidable mounting platform. The vertical section has a tapered wedge configured to move up and down the vertical section. The turntable is configured to rotate at least 360 degrees, and the vertical section is configured to move in a radial direction with respect to a center of rotation of the turntable.

Method and apparatus for removing a coil from a slot of a dynamoelectric machine

A retaining ring configuration system is disclosed. In one embodiment, the system includes a set of adjustment apparatuses configured to contact a portion of a generator rotor, each of the set of adjustment apparatuses including: a base member for contacting the portion of the generator rotor; an adjustment member for adjusting a position of the generator retaining ring relative to the generator rotor; and an actuation member coupled to the base member and operably attached to the adjustment member, the actuation member for actuating movement of the adjustment member to adjust the position of the generator retaining ring relative to the generator rotor.

A tool and a method are disclosed for cutting coils in a dynamoelectric machine. In an embodiment, the tool includes a blade having a cutting edge on a distal end thereof. The blade is operably connected on a proximal end thereof to a double acting hydraulic cylinder. The tool further includes at least one guide arm coupled to and extending longitudinally in a distal direction from the double acting hydraulic cylinder, wherein the at least one guide arm is disposed alongside the blade and extends parallel to a path of the blade.

Coil cutting tool and method

A method of welding a bearing is provided. The method includes providing an apparatus including at least one welding torch and a processor, positioning a holding fixture proximate the apparatus, securing a bearing in position in the holding fixture, applying a bead of weld to facilitate repairing a damaged surface of the bearing and incrementally rotating the bearing with the apparatus.

A drilling apparatus capable of having a minimal axial length to permit its use within limited confines. The drilling apparatus includes a housing with a housing bore and a first housing end, a spindle rotatably supported within the housing bore, bearing elements within the housing bore and surrounding the spindle to rotatably support the spindle within the housing, and a drive unit for rotating the spindle. The spindle is configured to secure a shank of a drill bit at a first end thereof exposed at the first housing end, and the drive unit is transversely offset from an axis of rotation of the spindle.

Drilling apparatus

An insert and method for altering a through-hole in a body, such as a steam balance hole in a steam turbine rotor wheel. The insert has a body with oppositely-disposed first and second ends, a flange radially extending from the second end of the body, and an outer surface at a perimeter of the body between the first end and the flange. A first bore within the body defines a first opening at the first end, and the first bore and outer surface of the body cooperate to define therebetween a wall capable of being plastically deformed in a radially outward direction. A second bore within the body communicates with the first bore and has a smaller cross-section than the first bore. The installation method entails installing the insert in a through-hole and flaring the wall to clamp the axial thickness of the body between the flange and flared wall of the insert.

A multi-functional rotary turning and positioning apparatus and method for performing multiple service operations on a turbomachinery rotor while the rotor remains continuously supported with the apparatus. The apparatus includes a platform, a rotary headstock mounted to the platform, a spindle coupled to and rotatably supported by the headstock and adapted for coupling to a turbomachinery rotor, bearing pedestals mounted to the platform and adapted for rotatably supporting the rotor, at least one motor for turning the spindle at least two different rotational speed ranges, equipment mountable to the platform for performing multiple service operations on the rotor, and equipment for controlling the rotational speed and position of the spindle for the purpose of performing the service operation with the operating equipment.

Multi-functional rotary turning and positioning apparatus and method

An apparatus and method suitable for supporting a cylindrical component. The apparatus includes a pedestal having an upper surface with a semispherical concave shape, and a carriage supported on the upper surface of the pedestal. The carriage has a lower surface and an oppositely-disposed upper surface with elements for contacting and rotatably supporting the cylindrical component. The lower surface of the carriage engages the upper surface of the pedestal and has a semispherical convex shape complementary to the semispherical concave shape of the upper surface of the pedestal. The apparatus further includes a reservoir at and recessed in the upper surface of the pedestal, and a feature for delivering a lubricant to the lubricant reservoir. The lower surface of the carriage and the upper surface of the pedestal define an enclosure around the reservoir.
