A method for removing metals from fuel containing vanadium or nickel including intimately mixing an adsorbent with the fuel and isolating the treated fuel. The treated fuel has reduced levels of vanadium, nickel and other metals. Systems for fuel treatment are also provided.

A method for making an alkylhalosilane is provided wherein the method comprises heat treating silicon and a form of copper at a temperature greater than about 500&deg; C. to produce a contact mass and effecting reaction between an alkyl halide and silicon in the presence of the contact mass to produce alkylhalosilane.

Method for preparing a contact mass

A proportion of Cu Si in a contact mass is determined by treating the mass with an inorganic ammonium salt, which selectively dissolves all forms of copper including free copper in deference to Cu Si, which is not dissolved. An initial copper content of the contact mass is determined, the contact mass is treated with an inorganic ammonium salt composition to extract copper in a molecular form other than Cu Si and extracted copper is subtracted from the initial copper content.

Dialkyldihalosilane formation during direct method alkylhalosilane production is promoted by effecting reaction between alkyl halide and powdered silicon in the presence of a catalyst comprising copper, zinc, and aluminum and further comprising an amount of phosphorus and tin wherein the amount of phosphorus and tin substantially enhances the selectivity of dialkyldihalosilane formation in comparison to the selectivity of dialkyldihalosilane formation in the presence of the catalyst comprising copper, zinc, aluminum and tin without phosphorus.

Method for promoting dialkyldihalosilane formation during direct method alkylhalosilane production

A method for forming a dialkyldichlorosilane, comprising reacting elemental silicon with an alkyl chloride using copper as a catalyst together with promoters zinc, tin, and a special promoter. The special promoter is silver, a silver compound, gold, a gold compound, or combinations thereof. The alkyl may be methyl such that the dialkyldichlorosilane is dimethyldichlorosilane and the alkyl chloride is methyl chloride. The reacting generates the dialkyldichlorosilane in accordance with a first selectivity for the dialkyldichlorosilane that exceeds a second selectivity for the dialkyldichlorosilane. The second selectivity is a selectivity for the dialkyldichlorosilane that would have existed had the special promoter been absent.

Method for improving selectivity for dialkyldichlorosilane

A method is described for enhancing the formation of alkylhalosilane during the direct method reaction between powdered silicon and a catalyst comprising copper, zinc, tin, and phosphorus. An increase in the value of the Cu/Zn weight ratio has been found to promote the performance of the phosphorus-containing catalyst as shown by in an increase in the weight percent dimethyldichlorosilane in methylchlorosilane crude.

A method is provided for improving alkylhalosilane selectivity in the direct method for making alkylhalosilane. There is introduced into the alkylhalosilane reactor, an effective amount of an organophosphine, such as trimethylphosphine, to enhance the formation of dialkylhalosilane during the direct reaction of alkylhalide and particulated silicon-copper contact mass.
