The invention relates to an ophthalmic product which has a capability of delivering a guest material (e.g., a lubricant or a drug) in a time-controlled-releasing manner. The invention also provides a process for making an ophthalmic product of the invention. In addition, the invention provides a method for time-controlled delivery of a drug or a lubricant.

Ophthalmic devices for sustained delivery of active compounds

The present invention provides a method for preparing a medical device, preferably a contact lens, having an antimicrobial metal-containing LbL coating on a medical device, wherein the antimicrobial metal-containing LbL coating comprises at least one layer of a negatively charged polyionic material having &#x2014;COOAg groups and/or silver nanoparticles formed by reducing Agions associated with the &#x2014;COOgroups of the negatively charged polyionic material. In addition, the present invention provides a medical device prepared according to a method of the invention.

Method for making medical devices having antimicrobial coatings thereon

The present invention provides methods for making an antimicrobial medical device, preferably an antimicrobial ophthalmic device, more preferably an antimicrobial extended-wear contact lens, which contains silver nano-particles distributed uniformly therein. The antimicrobial medical device can exhibit antimicrobial activity over an extended period of time.

Antimicrobial medical devices

The invention is concerned with the problem that with known plastic casting molds, especially those of polypropylene, the lenses produced with these molds have a slippery surface. The invention solves this problem through the use of polymers which are notable for their very low oxygen permeability.

Process for the production of contact lenses using plastic castings molds

The present invention provides a medical device, preferably a contact lens, which comprises an antimicrobial LbL coating containing one or more antimicrobial pepetides. The antimicrobial coating of the invention can impart to the medical an increased surface hydrophilicity and a relatively high antimicrobial activity coupled with low cytotoxicity. The antimicrobial coating of the invention has a minimal adverse effects on the desirable bulk properties of a contact lens, such as oxygen permeability, ion permeability, and optical properties. An antimicrobial coating of the present invention may find particular use in extended-wear contact lenses. In addition, the invention provides a method for making a medical device, preferably a contact lens, having an antimicrobial LbL coating thereon.

Medical devices having antimicrobial coatings thereon

The present invention provides a composite material, preferably an ophthalmic device, more preferably a contact lens, which comprises a vesicle-containing coating including at least one layer of a vesicle and one layer of a polyionic material having charges opposite the charges of the vesicle. Such composite material can find use in biomedical applications, for example, a device for localized drug delivery and an in vivo analyte sensor such as glucose sensing contact lens. By lifting off the vesicle-containing coating from a substrate, a self-standing membrane (film) capable of encapsulating a wide variety of guest materials can be prepared. In addition, the invention provides methods for making vesicle-containing composite and film materials of the present invention.

Materials containing multiple layers of vesicles

Biomedical devices, such as ophthalmic lenses, and methods of making such devices having a surface coating including at least one polyionic layer. A preferred method involves spray coating a polycationic material onto a core lens, rinsing and drying the lens, followed by spray coating a polyanionic material, rinsing and drying. The coating process may be applied a plurality of times to achieve a multi-layer coating on the lens surface. A particularly preferred embodiment is a contact lens comprising a highly oxygen permeable hydrophobic core coated with a 5 to 20 bilayers of hydrophilic polyionic materials.

The present invention provides a medical device, preferably an ophthalmic device, more preferably a contact lens, which comprises a lubricious coating including a capping layer of polyvinylpyrrolidone and/or at least one layer of a lubricious coating material and one layer of a polyionic material having charges opposite of the charges of the lubricious coating material. The lubricious coating on the medical device of the invention has increased lubricity, preferably characterized by an averaged CoF of about 3.0 or less, increased hydrophilicity characterized by an averaged contact angle of about 80 degree or less, and increased bacterial adhesion resistance, while maintaining the desired bulk properties such as oxygen permeability and ion permeability of lens material. Such lenses are useful as extended-wear contact lenses. In addition, the invention provides a method for making a medical device, preferably a contact lens, having a lubricious coating thereon.

Biomedical device having improved surface characteristics

The present invention provides a method for forming on a medical device, preferably an ophthalmic lens, more preferably a contact lens, a diffusion-controllable coating capable of controlling the out-diffusion or release of guest materials from the medical device. The method of the invention comprises: (1) applying one layer of clay and optionally one or more layers of polyionic materials onto the medical device; or (2) applying alternatively a layer of a first polyionic material and a layer of a second polyionic material having charges opposite of the charges of the first polyionic material onto the medical device and releasing the coated medical device into a releasing medium having a composition capable of imparting a desired permeability to the diffusion-controllable coating on the medical device.

Diffusion-controllable coatings on medical device

The present invention provides a medical device, preferably an ophthalmic device, more preferably a contact lens, which comprises a core material and a biocompatible LbL coating non-covalently attached to said core material. The biocompatible LbL coating comprises at least one charge/non-charge bilayer, wherein said charge/non-charge bilayer is composed of, in no particular order, one layer of a charged polymeric material and one layer of a non-charged polymeric material which is capable of being non-covalently bond to the charged polymeric material.

LbL-coated medical device and method for making the same

The present invention provides a medical device, preferably a contact lens, which comprises an antimicrobial coating including at least one layer of polyquat of formula (I) or (II). The antimicrobial coating on the medical device of the invention has a high antimicrobial efficacy against microorganisms including Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial, a low toxicity, low coefficient of friction, and increased hydrophilicity while maintaining the desired bulk properties such as oxygen permeability and ion permeability of lens material.
