A simple, reliable, and leak-proof electrochemical sensor for detection of toxic gases. The sensor comprises a housing having an electrochemical gas sensor cell with an electrolyte and first and second electrodes bonded to conductive plastic. Each of the first and second electrodes is a membrane formed from a fluoropolymer film having a layer adhered thereto of a catalyst-impregnated fluoropolymer. The layers of each of said first and second electrodes are bonded to conductive plastic, and are separated by an absorbent material having an electrolyte absorbed therein. The sensor is particularly intended for detection of carbon monoxide, but may be used to detect other gases.

The sensor comprises a housing having an electrochemical gas sensor cell with an electrolyte and sensing, counter and reference electrodes bonded to conductive plastic. Each of the electrodes is a membrane formed from a fluoropolymer film having a layer adhered thereto of a fluoropolymer-impregnated catalyst. The layers of each of the electrodes are bonded to conductive plastic, and are separated by an absorbent material having an electrolyte absorbed therein. The sensor is particularly intended for detection of carbon monoxide, but may be used to detect other gases.

A security system for monitoring and detecting security breaches in a home comprises a central monitor and a plurality of remote sensors for one or more of fire, smoke, intrusion, appliance operation and the like. Each of the sensors has a transmitter for transmitting an electronic message when the sensor goes into an alarm condition. The central monitor has a receiver to receive the electronic messages. An electronic microprocessor system decodes the received electronic message and takes the necessary course of action in accordance with a programmable scheme retained in electronic memory of the microprocessor system. The central monitor has a speech synthesizer responding to inputs from the microprocessor system. A keyboard is provided on the central monitor for allowing a user to interact with the security system. The microprocessor system is programmable via the keyboard to permit the user to customize the programmable scheme to render it unique to the user. The microprocessor system actuates the speech synthesizer to synthesize predetermined messages in response to input from the keyboard and in accordance with the programmable scheme based on received electronic message from the transmitters. The microprocessor system is capable of checking data as it is entered by the keyboard against what is required by the programmable scheme. This checking system permits the security system to announce an error message should the entered data be incorrect.

A security alarm system has a plurality of sensors for fire, smoke, intrusion and appliance operation. A central monitor is provided for monitoring and perceptibly indicating the status of each of the sensors. To provide for communication between the sensors and the central monitoring system, transmitters are located on the sensors and a receiver is provided on the central monitor. When one of the sensors establishes an alarm condition, its transmitter is actuated to transmit information indicating the type of alarm. A portable keyboard loads information data into an electronic memory of each of the transmitters and into the electronic memory associated with the receiver. The keyboard is separable from each memory to preclude altering of the information stored in the electronic memory of the respective transmitter. The receiver identifies data transmitted from a particular transmitter by accessing its memory which is loaded with the data from the keyboard, and obtaining a match of the data transmitted to the data stored to identify the sensor. The central monitor then indicates the appropriate alarm based on the identified transmitter of a particular sensor.

A tester device is disclosed for a photoelectric smoke detector. The tester, when actuated, increases the intensity of light emitted by a light source to simulate in the sample chamber by such light scattering and reflecting off chamber walls, an amount of light which would be scattered by a predetermined concentration of smoke to which a photoelectric sensor is responsive and causes an indication that the detector is functioning as intended.

In an electronic smoke sensing and alarm device, a dual ionization chamber arrangement comprises a single source of radioactive material and first and second chambers separated by a common electrically conductive electrode. A portion of the radioactive material ionizes the air in the first chamber and another portion of the radioactive material ionizes the air in the second chamber. This arrangement provides an accurate control on the current flow through each chamber.
