The present invention relates to a razor blade having one or more coatings formed by the atomic layer deposition (ALD) process, the formed coatings being uniform, conformal, and dense. The coatings may be on an entire surface of a blade flank, and at least a portion or an entire surface of a blade body. The coatings may be etched. The invention relates to a razor blade having a first coating of a first material and a second coating of a second material where at least one of the first and second coatings is deposited using an ALD process and the second coating is deposited on a top surface of the first coating. The first and second materials may be similar or different. The present invention relates to a razor component having one coating of at least one layer of one or more materials formed using an ALD process.

Atomic layer deposition coatings on razor components

A razor blade including a substrate with a cutting edge, the substrate includes a mixed nitride-substrate interregion disposed at or beneath a surface of the substrate, the mixed nitride-substrate interregion being substantially free of a compound layer.

Strengthened razor blade

A novel application of the atomic layer deposition (ALD) process for producing a conformal coating on a razor blade is disclosed where a uniform, conformal, dense coating is deposited on an entire surface of a blade flank and at least a portion or an entire surface of a blade body. To improve the shaving ability of the coated blade edge (e.g., decrease the blade tip radius), the ALD-produced coating may be etched during, after, or both during and after, the ALD process.

Razors cartridges including a guard, a cap, and at least two blades with parallel sharpened edges located between the guard and cap are provided. A first blade defines a blade edge nearest the guard and a second blade defines a blade edge nearest the cap. The first blade has a cutter force less than the cutter force of the second blade.

Razors and razor cartridges

A razor blade having a substrate with a cutting edge being defined by a sharpened tip. The substrate has a thickness of between about 1.3 and 1.6 micrometers measured at a distance of four micrometers from the blade tip, a thickness of between about 2.2 and 2.7 micrometers measured at a distance of eight micrometers from the blade tip, a thickness of between about 3.8 and 4.9 micrometers measured at a distance of sixteen micrometers from the blade tip, a ratio of thickness measured at four micrometers from the blade tip to the thickness measured at eight micrometers from the blade tip of at least 0.55 and a ratio of thickness measured at four micrometers from the blade tip to the thickness measured at sixteen micrometers from the blade tip of at least 0.30.

Razor blades

The present invention relates to a process for forming a razor blade. The process includes the steps of: a) providing a substrate, b) forming a wedge-shaped sharpened edge on the substrate that has an included angle of less than thirty degrees and a tip radius of less than 1,000 angstroms, c) placing the substrate in a vacuum chamber, d) placing a first solid target in the vacuum chamber, e) providing a gas to be ionized in the vacuum chamber, and f) generating ions from the first solid target by applying a negative voltage to the first solid target in pulses, the ions forming a thin film coating on the wedge-shaped sharpened edge on the substrate.

Process of forming a razor blade

A razor blade includes a substrate with a wedge-shaped edge at a distance of forty micrometers from the sharpened tip, and a layer of diamond or diamond-like material defined by facets that have an included angle of less than seventeen degrees that has a thickness of at least twelve hundred angstroms from the sharpened tip of said substrate to a distance of forty micrometers from the sharpened tip, and an ultimate tip defined by facets that have lengths of at least about 0.1 micrometer and define an included angle of at least sixty degrees, and that defines a tip radius of less than about 400 angstroms, an aspect ratio in the range of 1:1-3:1, a hardness of at least thirteen gigapascals and an L5 wet wool felt cutter force of less than 0.8 kilogram.

Razor blade technology

A shaving system with a blade member with a cutting edge of wedge shape that is defined by main facets with an included facet angle in the range of 10.degree.-17.degree. in the region forty micrometers from the cutting edge. The blade is mounted between leading and trailing skin-engaging surfaces so that the blade tangent angle is less than 20.degree. and the interior main facet of the blade is disposed at an angle of more than 150.degree. to a reference line that extends from the cutting edge of the blade to the skin-engaging point next forward of the blade edge.

Shaving system

A razor blade includes a substrate with a wedge-shaped edge, an interlayer of material selected from the group consisting of silicon, silicon carbide, vanadium, tantalum, nickel, niobium, and niobium-molybdenum alloy and alloys of such materials on the tip and flanks of the wedge-shaped edge, the thickness of the interlayer preferably being in the range of about 50-500 angstroms, and a layer of diamond or diamond-like carbon material on the interlayer that preferably has a thickness of about two thousand angstroms and that defines a tip radius of less than about 1000 angstroms.

A razor blade includes a substrate with a wedge-shaped edge, a layer of molybdenum on the tip and flanks of the wedge-shaped edge, the thickness of the molybdenum layer preferably being in the range of about 50-500 angstroms, and a layer of diamond or diamond-like material on the molybdenum layer that preferably has a thickness of about 200-2,000 angstroms and that defines a tip radius of less than about 500 angstroms, an aspect ratio in the range of 1:13-3:1, a hardness of at least thirteen gigapascals and an L5 wet wool felt cutter force of less than 0.8 kilogram.
