A liquid delivery device for killing weeds. The liquid delivery device includes a main tube, a handle, and a pump housing that includes a pump chamber. A reservoir is disposed in the main tube, and a plunger is connected to the reservoir and positioned in the pump chamber. The plunger is operative to push a liquid contained in the pump chamber through a check valve and dispensing orifices when a user moves the reservoir with respect to the main tube and pump housing. The device also includes a spike extending from the pump housing and an annular stand-off surrounding the spike. The spike is adapted to disrupt the soil and damage the root structure of a target weed.

Fluid delivery device for killing weeds

The present invention relates to noninvasive transdermal systems comprised of a noninvasive transdermal patch and a reflectometer. The noninvasive transdermal patches are comprised of a wet chemistry component and a dry chemistry component. The wet chemistry component is a liquid transfer medium in the form of a gel layer for the extraction and liquid bridge transfer of the analyte of interest from the biological fluid within or beneath the skin to the dry chemistry component. The dry chemistry component is a reagent system for interacting with the analyte of interest (glucose) to generate a color change. The reflectometers include a modulated light source for emitting light to illuminate a target surface which possesses a certain color and shade of color for detection by an optical detector. The output signal is processed for determining a corresponding quantity or quality measurement.

Noninvasive transdermal systems for detecting an analyte in a biological fluid and methods

The present invention comprises reflectometer for detecting and measuring subtle changes in color and shade of color. In general, a pulsating light source illuminates a target surface which possesses a certain color and shade of color. An optical detection circuit synchronously detects light that is reflected from the target surface and generates an output signal whose voltage is indicative of the color and shade of the target surface. This voltage is then processed to make an evaluation and identification of any measurable quantity or quality that is represented by the detected color or shade of color.

Reflectometer

A modulated light source emits light to illuminate a target surface which possesses a certain color and shade of color. Light that is reflected from the target surface is detected by an optical detector. The output from the optical detector is processed and fed back to the optical detector to compensate for any shift caused by ambient light, temperature or other external factors, and is differentially amplified to generate an output signal indicative of the color and shade of the target surface. The output signal from the differential amplifier is then demodulated by a synchronous detector to produce a substantially steady DC voltage that is indicative of the color or shade of color at the target surface. Where the target surface color shade is indicative of a certain measurable quantity or quality (such as an analyte concentration), the steady DC voltage is converted using a look-up table or mathematical formula into a corresponding quantity or quality measurement. In performing this conversion, compensation is made for any variations in modulated light source intensity due to temperature change.

A selectively configurable storage container for storing and transporting items through various environments includes a housing having at least one surrounding sidewall and a bottom which defines an enclosure. The storage container also includes a motor with at least one drive assembly. The drive assembly is selectively engagable with a first member, e.g., a wheel, and is configured to move the housing relative to a first terrain, e.g., a floor. The drive assembly is also interchangeable with at least one additional member configured to move the housing relative to a different terrain or environment, e.g., sand, water, grass, etc. A steering control cooperates with the drive assembly to navigate the housing through either the first or the different terrain.

A digital thermometer, having a sensing tip that is integral with a heater, a display, and a microcontroller which samples for rise time and proportionally operates the heater to increase the temperature of the sensing tip in an alternating control sequence that includes a post-heating delay and, thus, the sensing tip quickly arrives at a stable temperature when no further heating is required.

A system for detecting the existence of a hazardous condition in an area includes a number of battery-powered detecting units whereby each detecting unit is respectively located within a zone within the area and each detecting unit includes a sensing circuit, a battery level monitoring circuit and a transmitting circuit. The sensing circuit senses the existence of a hazardous condition within that respective zone and generates a hazardous condition alert signal in response thereto. The battery level monitoring circuit monitors the level of the battery powering the detecting unit and generates a battery status signal when the battery is at an acceptable level. The transmitting circuit transmits the hazardous condition alert signal and/or the battery status signal. The system also includes a receiving unit which is responsive to the detecting units and includes a receiving circuit, a battery status indicating circuit and a hazard condition alert circuit. The receiving circuit receives the hazardous condition alert signals and/or the battery status signals. The battery status indicating circuit is responsive to the battery status signals and includes a number of visual indicators, corresponding to the number of detecting units, which are respectively responsive to the battery status signals such that each indicator provides a first visual indication when the respective battery status signal corresponding thereto is received and a second visual indication when the respective battery status signal is not received. The hazardous condition alert circuit is responsive to the hazardous condition alert signals such that the alert circuit respectively activates the visual indicators corresponding to one of the detecting units when an alert signal is received therefrom. The battery status signals are preferably periodically transmitted by the detecting units to the receiving unit.

An improved heater wire and electro-thermal controller suitable for use in electric heating appliances such as electric blankets and heating pads. The heater wire is formed with a first conductor for heat generation and a second conductor for sensing. The first conductor and second conductor are wound as coaxial spirals with an insulation material electrically isolating the two conductors. The two spirals are counter-wound with respect to one another to insure that the turns cross, albeit on separate planes, several times per inch. With the conductors thus formed, if the insulation separating the conductors fails, the first and second conductors will come into electrical contact to facilitate detection of this hazardous condition. The controller of the present invention includes an electronic control unit a sensor input circuit, a heater driver circuit and a user interface circuit. The heater driver circuit is operatively coupled to the first conductor and provides a heater voltage in response to a signal received from the electronic control unit. The sensor input circuit is operatively coupled to the second conductor, measures a resistance and voltage associated therewith, and provides a signal to the electronic control unit in response thereto. The electronic control unit is responsive to signals received from both the user interface circuit and sensor wire input circuit and controls the heater driver circuit accordingly.

A digital fever thermometer includes a backlit LCD display, which may act as a non-audible annunciator indicating that a stable temperature has been achieved. The digital fever thermometer includes a photo detector and a single mode-select switch to determine when the backlight should be enabled. When the backlight is enabled, the thermometer activates the backlight, indicating that a temperature reading is complete.

A safety-assuring control device for an electric blanket which includes a PTC heater includes an integrated circuit microcontroller unit having first and second safety circuit inputs and an output connected to a control input of an electrically controlled heater switch. A neon tube is connected between the primary safety link return conductor of the heater and the first safety circuit input, to indicate whether there is a first type of fault in the PTC heater. A connection between the second safety circuit input and the secondary safety link return conductor of the PTC heater is provided which indicates whether there is a second type of fault in the heater. The microcontroller unit includes a preliminary fault detection circuit for supplying a limited power test signal in a test mode to the heater for a predetermined period of time prior to a full power operation of the heater. The microcontroller unit also includes a circuit for controlling operation of the microcontroller unit to terminate supply of current to the heater if at least one fault is detected by the microcontroller at least one of the first and second safety circuit inputs during the predetermined period of time, and for controlling operation of the microcontroller unit to supply current to the heater in the full power operation if no fault is detected during the predetermined period of time.

Resettable safety circuit for PTC electric blankets and the like

A two-terminal electronic thermostat connectable in series with an electrical heater and a source of AC power and selectively providing AC power to the electrical heater, and a power supply incorporated in the thermostat for providing DC power to the control circuitry of the thermostat, includes a relay connectable in series with the electrical heater, a control circuit for selectively actuating the relay, an ambient temperature sensor and a potentiometer for setting a set point temperature. The power supply includes a current transformer having its primary winding connected in series with the relay and the electrical heater. The power supply also includes a first bridge rectifier circuit, a second bridge rectifier circuit connected to the secondary winding of the current transformer and a capacitor divider network formed from first and second capacitors and providing a desired DC voltage to the control circuit. The first capacitor is coupled to the first bridge rectifier circuit. The first and second bridge rectifier circuits have DC outputs which are connected across the second capacitor of the network, which also acts to filter the DC voltage provided to the control circuit of the thermostat.

A humidity control device includes a microcontroller, a variable impedance humidity sensing circuit and a zero crossing detector circuit. The humidity sensing circuit and zero crossing circuit are provided with an AC line voltage and both have outputs which are provided to the microcontroller. The humidity control device also includes a semiconductor switch circuit which switches the AC line voltage to an external electrical device, such as a dehumidifier or heater, at the zero crossing.
