A compact, rugged and light weight condenser structure for a heat exchange system, preferably fabricated in layers and incorporating a jet fin structure for heat exchange with a single phase coolant fluid and tapered passages to maintain relatively constant vapor flow velocity and a consistent, high efficiency flow regime in a refrigerant fluid including vapor and liquid phases. Layered construction permits economical fabrication of the condenser in a plurality of configurations and heat exchange capacities. Tapered configuration of the refrigerant passages, together with the consistent distribution of jet fin heat exchange to the coolant allows a flow regime to be maintained which is highly tolerant of variation in the direction and force of acceleration forces on the condenser. Accordingly, a condenser capable of highly consistent heat exchange performance over a wide range of acceleration conditions is provided.

Shear flow/jet fin condenser

A helical jet impingement evaporator including a laminated evaporator core comprising a plurality of orifice plates (1) each including a plurality of jet impingement orifices (5) for enabling a passage of a first fluid therethrough on a single-phase side of the evaporator. A plurality of spacer plates (2) are interposed between adjacent orifice plates (1) and the orifice plates (1) and spacer plates (2) are stacked with adjacent orifice plates (1) and spacer plates (2) being offset with respect to each other in a circumferential direction. The orifice plate (1) include circumferentially and radially spaced elongate slots (7, 9, 11) in registry with elongated slots (8, 10, 14) in the spacer plates (2) so as to define separate helical two-phase evaporating flow paths for a second fluid on a two-phase side of the evaporator.

Helical jet impingement evaporator

A two-media laminated jet impingement heat exchanger comprising a heat exchanger core (1) including a plurality of soild heat exchanger or spacer plates (7) and a plurality of corrugated heat exchanger plates (8, 9) respectively interposed between and secured to the adjacent solid heat exchanger plates (7) so as to define between adjacent heat exchanger plates (7) second channels for respectively accommodating the two media. Each of the corrugated heat exchanger plates (8, 9) include a plurality of surface portions (8a, 9a) extending substantially parallel to one another. At least two rows of orifices (10) are provided in the surface portions of the corrugated heat exchanger plates (8) associated with one medium for enabling a flow of the one medium therethrough. At least one row of orifices (11) is provided in the surface portion of the heat exchanger plates (9) associated with the other medium of the two media for enabling a flow of the other media therethrough. The at least two rows of orifices (10) in the surface portions (8 a) of the corrugated heat exchanger plates (8) are offset with respect to the corresponding rows in adjacent surface portions such that the one medium flows through the orifices and impinges on adjacent surface portions so as to define a tortuous flow path for the one medium through the respective channels associated with the one medium of the heat exchanger core (1).

Jet impingement plate fin heat exchanger

A heat exchanger in accordance with the present invention transfers heat between first and second fluids (36 and 60) flowing transversely with respect to each other through a heat exchanger core (30) which is formed from a stack of a plurality of heat conductive first and second plates (32 and 34) with at least one first plate partially defining at least one first channel (55) and at least two plates each having at least one fluid orifice within each second channel (58). Each first plate comprises first and second slots which each extend through the first plate to form a passage, each first slot (52) extending across the first plate to opposed peripheral sides of the first plate and each second slot (59) extending across the first plate and not to the opposed peripheral sides. Each first slot is contained in a different first channel with the opposed peripheral sides respectively being disposed on different faces of the core and each second slot is disposed within a different second channel.

Crossflow jet impingement heat exchanger

A pressure sealed, laminated fluid-to-fluid heat exchanger is disclosed herein. The heat exchanger includes a laminated stack of alternating orifice and spacer plates with the orientation of the spacer plates relative to the orifice plates defining first and second fluid paths. A low pressure fluid conduit is provided for connecting a low pressure fluid supply to one of the fluid paths. A high pressure shell houses the stack and includes inlet and outlet ports for a high pressure fluid. The high pressure fluid enters the shells and traverses the other fluid path and also places the stack under compression to aid the bonds between the spacer plates and the orifice plates.
