A system and method for communicating data between a user connected to a subscriber line and a data network comprising a first module connected to the subscriber line and a second module, physically separate from the first module, connected to the data network. The first module includes a signal converter for converting analog signals received from the subscriber line to a digital signal for sending over an interconnection path to the second module. The second module includes a modulator/demodulator for converting the digital signal to data packets. The first module may be pooled with M first modules and connected over a shared interconnection path to N second modules. The interconnection path may be concentrated to permit communication of signals from those first and second modules communicating user data at any given time.

System and method for providing high-speed data access using a distributed modem

A method and device for providing telephone subscribers serviced from digital loop carrier (&ldquo;DLC&rdquo;) systems access to a computer network. The described device includes a redirect repeater with the capability to redirect multiplexed channels of the DLC to a computer network. The redirect repeater is interfaced to the DLC and redirects channels of the multiplexed DLC system to the computer network in response to a redirect signal. The described method includes monitoring the DLC for a call origination message indicating a subscriber is originating a telephone call, buffering messages from the originating telephone call and recognizing a redirect signal indicating the telephone call is to be directed to the computer network. Messages indicating the telephone call is redirected to the computer network are inserted and the messages from the telephone call can then be redirect to the computer network.

Method and system for a redirect repeater providing network access

A method and apparatus of powering components on a network by using a load-share technique and by using over-voltage and current-limiting circuitry. The power subsystem for a component in a network is designed in a load-share manner whereby the power subsystem will supply power to the network bus and to the component load. Under normal operation of the power subsystem, the load will be powered directly from the power subsystem. In the event of a failure, the load will immediately pull power from the bus and thereby maintain network operation. The power subsystem and the power supply are protected from disruptions due to voltage or current surges. Further, the power subsystem is in compliance with the IEEE 1394 specifications in terms of recommended current levels and galvanic isolation of the power sources.

In a communication system which includes a plurality of stations interconnected for communications by a first bus, a second station includes a device, such as a processor, and a resource, such as a memory or a peripheral unit, interconnected for communication by a second bus. An interface mechanism connecting the first bus with the second bus allows the device to access the first bus over the second bus, and allows a first station to access the resource via the first and second buses. Deadlock detection circuitry detects cotemporaneous attempts by the device to access the first bus and attempts by the first station to access the resource. Deadlock resolution circuitry responds to deadlock detection by disconnecting the device from the second bus to allow the first station to access the resource, and by reconnecting the device to the second bus when the first station ceases to access the resource. If the device is operating under program control, the deadlock detection and resolution are transparent to the program.
