A printing ink useful for 'waterless' printing processes comprising a water-in-oil microemulsion wherein the water phase is present in an amount of about 5 to 20 wt. %, based on the weight of the ink. The water phase contains about 0.5 to 3 wt. %, based on the weight of the ink, of a surfactant which will not lower the surface tension (as measured at ambient temperature) of the ink, but will preferably increase the surface tension of the ink by at least about 5%. The ink optionally contains about 0.05 to 0.5 wt. %, based on the weight of the ink, of a water-soluble polymer capable of producing a viscosity in the water phase of about 5 to 10 poise as measured at ambient temperature.

Microemulsion printing ink

A thermosetting printing ink composition comprising a functional copolymer of a thermosettable polyester and a polysiloxane, a pigment, a crosslinking agent and a curing catalyst which may be a strong acid or a metal salt thereof. The composition desirably also includes a reactive diluent such as a glycol, glycol ether or alcohol. The compositions are especially useful for imprinting metal containers such as beer and soda cans.

An encapsulating composition for electronic devices comprises a curable material such as a silicone resin and an ion scavenger compound selected from certain calixarene or oxacalixarene compounds in which at least half of the phenolic groups have been substituted by specific groups and certain silacrown compounds. Exemplary ion scavenger compounds include ##STR1## the tetraethyl acetate of 7, 13, 19, 25-tetra-tertbutyl-27, 28, 29, 30-tetrahydroxy-2,3-dihomo-3-oxacalix-4-arene and 1,1-dimethasila-17-crown-6.

Chemical compositions such as adhesive, sealing or coating compositions containing one or more microencapsulated ingredients are activated by directly contacting an ultrasonic device (2) to the composition (8) and sonicating the composition to rupture the microcapsules. The method may be carried out in a sonication chamber (1) in which the ultrasonic device (2) is immersed in the composition (8) and from which the composition flows before it sets. Alternatively the ultrasonic energy may be applied to the composition in situ.

Cyanoacrylate adhesive compositions which employ calixarene compounds as accelerators give substantially reduced fixture and cure times on de-activating substrates such as wood. The calixarene compounds are preferably employed at levels of about 0.1-1% by weight of the composition. The calixarene compounds particularly useful in this invention may be represented by the formula: ##STR1## where R.sup.1 is alkyl, alkoxy, substituted alkyl or substituted alkoxy; R.sup.2 is H or alkyl; and n=4, 6, or 8.

Polymer bound calixarenes

A method for imaging vapor deposited photoresists of cyanoacrylates or related anionically polymerizable monomers without the use of solvent development. This method consists of treating the substrate with a compound which releases acid when exposed to high-energy radiation. In certain cases when the surface of the substrate is slightly acidic or neutral, it is necessary to activate the surface with a basic liquid or vapor which must be chosen so as not to react with the radiation-sensitive acid precursor. The substrate is exposed to actinic or ionizing radiation through a mask or to steered high-energy beams. Finally, the substrate is exposed to a vapor of cyanoacrylate monomer which condenses and polymerizes on the unirradiated regions forming a relief image.

The compositions are further characterized by a thickener component, which may suitably be selected from various polymers such as poly(methyl methacrylate), methacrylate type copolymers, acrylic rubbers, polyvinyl acetate and poly(.alpha.-cyanoacrylate) or silicas treated with polydialkylsiloxanes or trialkylsilanes.
