An intelligent locomotive brake control system which selects and optimizes use of dynamic, independent, and automatic brakes on the locomotive to assure intended brake power, to minimize in-train forces, minimize brake component wear, and to automate standard train brake protocol. The system may be programmed to alter an automatic brake application commanded by a train driver to omit or reduce the amount of the automatic brake application in favor of a dynamic brake application, and independent brake application, or combination thereof.

Intelligent locomotive brake control system

A locomotive air brake control system that responds to penalty braking requests from external systems by applying a varying amount of train brake level based on monitored and calculated parameters in order to enforce a defined train condition. The system may include a minimum acceptable train braking, a condition to be achieved to prevent further application of train brakes, and a maximum train brake level to be applied in response to the request. Alternatively, the system may apply braking in stepped levels according defined thresholds for a train behavior variable of interest such as speed or deceleration. The system may be configured to incrementally apply and release train brakes during the adaptive penalty, and may also adjust the level of braking according to calculated braking capacity of the train.

Adaptive penalty braking for locomotive air brake system

A system and method for automatically calibrating the flow measurement device of a locomotive air brake control system. The air brake control computer controls activates a magnet valve to create a predetermined flow from the brake pipe through an orifice to exhaust, thereby creating a reference flow value to enable the calibration of the flow measurement device. The system reduces the likelihood of human error and variability by automating the steps necessary for flow measurement calibration under computer control.

Automatic flow calibration for locomotive air brake system

A system and method for incrementally accomplishing brake pipe reductions using an operator button, touch sensitive screen or other human machine interface. The system is preferably made available to the user when the brake handle is positioned in the 'minimum' brake application position and allows an operator to create a more precise target reduction value without having to manually move the brake handle to the location that the operator believes may result in the desired reduction. Using small, predetermined increments, the system allows for more precise control over brake pressure without an operator having to estimate what handle movement will accomplish the desired brake pressure.

The dual vent valve includes a housing having brake pipe, emergency input and exhaust ports, and first and second valves. The emergency output port is fluidly connected to the emergency input port. The first valve selectively connects the brake pipe port to the exhaust port by opening the first valve in response to an emergency signal on the brake pipe port. The second valve selectively connects the brake pipe port to the exhaust port by opening the second valve in response to an emergency signal on the emergency input port.

A manifold includes first and second plates secured together at an inner face of each plate. A plurality of chambers and passages are in the inner faces of the plates and at least one port on an outer face of each plate connected to one of the chambers and passages. A crossover element in the inner face of the first plate separates a chamber or passage in the first plate from a chamber or passage in the second plate in the crossover area where the chambers or passages cross.

The present locomotive brake control system includes a vacuum relay valve responsive to air brake apply and release signals on the air brake pipe to provide vacuum brake apply and release signals on a vacuum brake pipe. A locomotive brake controller is responsive to the brake apply and release signals on the air brake pipe to control the brake cylinder to apply and release the locomotive brakes in an air mode, and is responsive to the brake apply and release signals on the vacuum brake pipe sensed by a transducer to control the brake cylinder to apply and release the locomotive brakes in a vacuum mode.

Locomotive air/vacuum control system

A control system which allows electro-pneumatic control of an equalizing reservoir with the capacity to create penalty applications in a purely pneumatic manner. A controller for the equalizing reservoir includes an electro-pneumatic source of pressure or atmosphere responsive to an electrical equalizing pressure control signal and a pilot valve selectively connecting the electro-pneumatic source or atmosphere to the equalizing reservoir in response to pressure in a pilot port of the first pilot valve. A magnetic valve is provided having a first input connected to a second source of pressure, a second input connected to atmosphere and an output connected to the pilot port of the first pilot valve. At least one penalty valve is connected to the pilot input of the first pilot valve and is responsive to a penalty signal to connect the pilot input to atmosphere. A fourth valve has a first input connected to the second input of the first pilot valve and an output connected to a third source of pressure lower than pressure in the equalizing reservoir prior to a penalty signal. The fourth valve connects its first input to its output in response to a penalty signal. A method of initializing the electro-pneumatic source of pressure or atmosphere responsive to an electrical equalizing pressure control signal.

A brake controller for a locomotive includes a train brake pipe, a locomotive brake pipe, a brake cylinder, a control valve and a relay valve. The first control input of the relay valve is selectively connected to one of the output of the control valve and the locomotive brake pipe; and the second control input of the relay valve is selectively connected to the locomotive brake pipe when the control valve output is a release signal. A first electro-pneumatic valve, when activated, causes the control valve to be a release signal. An electronic controller is connected to a first pressure transducer for the locomotive brake pipe, a lead/trail mode switch and the first electro-pneumatic valve; and activates the electro-pneumatic valve for brake release pressures in the locomotive brake pipe when the mode switch is in the trail mode.

Trail locomotive brake control

A control system which allows electro-pneumatic control of an equalizing reservoir with the capacity to create penalty applications in a purely pneumatic manner. A controller for the equalizing reservoir includes an electro-pneumatic source of pressure or atmosphere responsive to an electrical equalizing pressure control signal and a pilot valve selectively connecting the electro-pneumatic source or atmosphere to the equalizing reservoir in response to pressure in a pilot port of the first pilot valve. A magnetic valve is provided having a first input connected to a second source of pressure, a second input connected to atmosphere and an output connected to the pilot port of the first pilot valve. At least one penalty valve is connected to the pilot input of the first pilot valve and is responsive to a penalty signal to connect the pilot input to atmosphere. The pilot valve and the penalty valve pneumatically produce a brake application regardless of the state of the magnetic valve or its controller.
