A system and method are described to determine a pump intake pressure in a petroleum producing well. The system includes a controller at a well site of the petroleum producing well, a system of valves connected to pipes collecting the well casing gas produced from a casing annulus of the producing well. The valves are controlled by the controller and a pressure sensor measures the pressure of the well casing gas in the casing annulus. The system determines a well casing gas flow rate by measuring a build-up pressure of the well casing gas in a casing annulus when a valve from the casing annulus is closed. A fluid level in the casing of the well is determined using a pressure wave created in the well casing gas using the controller and the one or more valves. A fluid gradient correction factor is found using an actual fluid level in the casing. The controller then calculates the pressure using the gas flow rate, the fluid level and the fluid gradient correction factor.

System and method for determining pump intake pressure or reservoir pressure in an oil and gas well

A sand bypass separator is provided for separating particulate matter from a fluid mixture in a production well and directing the separated particulate matter away from a pump intake. The separator includes an outer tube, an inner tube positioned within the outer tube. The outer tube has a plurality of slots to allow the fluid mixture to enter the separator between the outer tube and the inner tube. As the fluid mixture moves downward, the fluid mixture reaches a downward velocity sufficient to allow the particulate matter in the fluid mixture to continue downward as the fluid is drawn into the inner tube through the pump intake. A bypass that extends from above the pump intake to below the pump intake to collect and direct the separated particulate matter separated below the pump intake may also be included.

Sand and solids bypass separator

A method of separating gas from a fluid mixture in a production stream of a well where the method includes using an outer tube and an inner tube positioned concentrically with the outer tube to separate gas and liquid from a mixture. The production stream is directed through the outer tube and into a space between a well casing of the well and the outer tube where gas in the production stream can separate from fluid in the production stream. The separated fluid is then directed through the inner tube to a pump.

Fluid and gas separator

A separator for separating gas from a liquid mixture in a production stream of a well. The separator includes an outer tube and an inner tube positioned concentrically with the outer tube. The production stream is directed through the outer tube where gas in the production stream can separate from liquid in the production stream. The separated liquid is then directed through the inner tube to a pump. The separated gas is directed through a gas bypass to an area above a fluid intake for the pump.

Gas bypass separator

A sand bypass separator is provided for separating particulate matter from a fluid mixture in a production well and directing the separated particulate matter away from a pump intake. The separator includes an outer tube, an inner tube positioned within the outer tube, and a bypass. The outer tube has a plurality of slots to allow the fluid mixture to enter the separator between the outer tube and the inner tube. As the fluid mixture moves downward, the fluid mixture reaches a downward velocity sufficient to allow the particulate matter in the fluid mixture to continue downward as the fluid is drawn into the inner tube through the pump intake. The bypass extends from above the pump intake to below the pump intake to collect and direct the separated particulate matter separated below the pump intake.

A separator for separating gas from a fluid mixture in a production stream of a well. The separator includes an outer tube and an inner tube positioned concentrically with the outer tube. The production stream is directed through the outer tube and into a space between a well casing of the well and the outer tube where gas in the production stream can separate from fluid in the production stream. The separated fluid is then directed through the inner tube to a pump.

A horizontal gas and liquid bypass separator for use in a hydrocarbon producing well bore is provided for allowing gas to bypass over the top of a pump intake in a horizontal portion of a well bore. The separator includes at least one valve having a body, a conduit extending longitudinally through the body, a channel extending transversely through the body from an outer surface of the body to the conduit, and a plunger positioned within the conduit. The plunger is translatable within the channel to selectively seal the conduit relative to the channel to thereby inhibit gas from entering the conduit when the plunger is translated to a closed position and to allow liquid to flow within the conduit when the plunger is translated to an open position.

Horizontal gas and liquid bypass separator

A new method separating sand, solids, and produced particulates down-hole in a well producing hydrocarbons. The separation assembly can include ether one, two, or more segments or stages of varying lengths depending upon the individual application. The assembly is installed into the tubing string or delivery conduit of a well producing hydrocarbons. One stage can consist of a velocity chamber whereby separation of particulates occurs by increasing the downward velocity of particulates and reducing the upward velocity of hydrocarbons thereby allowing the particulates to 'fall-out' into a lower chamber where the particulates are captured. Another stage can consist of a filter whereby particulates are captured in a chamber that can consist of filtering materials such as gravel, rock, sand, wood, or manmade materials. Each of the stages can be employed individually or in combination.

Down-hole sand and solids separator utilized in producing hydrocarbons

A particulate separator system and method for petroleum wells are described. An embodiment comprises a two stage separator. A fluid mixture flows into an outer casing that surrounds an inner tube. The first stage comprises a number of baffles that help to separate gas from fluid as the fluid mixture falls downward within the casing. A second stage comprises a widened inner tube and a fin causing the fluid mixture to fall radially around the inner tube and downward. As the mixture gains speed the particulate matter is forced to the periphery of the mixture by centrifugal force. A pump intake on the bottom of the inner tube pulls in the fluid while the particulate matter falls away.

Down-hole gas and solids separator utilized in production hydrocarbons

A system for determining rod position in a rod pumped well is described that includes a laser unit mounted on an underside of the walking beam and a reflector plate mounted on the sampson post of the rod pumped well in a position near the laser unit. The laser transmits a beam onto the reflector plate allowing the laser unit to determine the distance between the laser and the reflector plate. The distance between the laser and reflector plate as determined by the laser is transmitted to a controller which calculates the position of the rod in the rod pumped well based on the distance determined by the laser.
