A number of rare earth-cobalt permanent magnet segments are temporarily secured together by means of a tool. Before securement the segment surfaces at each interface are pre-tinned. A solder pre-form in the shape of a 'wagon wheel' rests on one transverse end of the magnet so that the spokes of the pre-form overlie the interface joints. The magnet is then lowered into a gradually heated glycerine bath until the solder melts and directly flows over each interface. Upon slow cooling of the cylinder, metallurgical bonding is effected between the various segments of the magnet.

Bushings are embedded within a production drill plate to replicate the hole pattern of a master hole pattern plate. The exterior surface of each bushing is threaded, as is the wall of a receiving hole in the production drill plate. The pitch of the bushing and hole are the same but the pitch diameters are somewhat different so that the threads of the bushing are loosely engaged within the threads of the hole. When the bushing is potted in a properly aligned position, the containment potting material becomes compressed in the thread engagement area thereby resisting axial displacement of the bushing.

Apparatus for measuring the displacement of a member relative to a reference plane has a transmitter and a receiver spaced therefrom at a predetermined distance. A reference energy beam coaxially passes through a light diffraction grating having a ruled surface. The grating passes a zero order part of the beam through undeviated and diffracts a multiplicity of beams of first, second, third, and higher order, at constant angles with the zero order part, the angles varying with the frequency of the ruled surface of the grating. A coaxial sleeve movably mounts the light diffraction grating to provide a roll zero reference. The zero order part of the beam provides the zero reference for pitch and yaw and the first order beams provides zero reference for roll. The lines of the ruled surface of the grating have a frequency matching the predetermined distance. The receiver has a container movably mounted to provide a roll zero reference, a pitch and yaw displacement indicator in the container and a roll indicator in the container.

Multi-axis alignment apparatus

An apparatus for measuring the relative positions of hole patterns is disclosed wherein two or more fiber optic bundles disposed within first and second holes and connected to one or more sources of light and light sensitive, position sensing devices provide two, three, four, or five axis measurements of the relative positions of the two holes. By measuring the position of the light from the source transmitted via an optical bundle in the first hole and received by an optical bundle in the second hole, a precise measurement system that senses mismatch and the direction thereof with a very high degree of accuracy is achieved. The movement of plane surfaces may also be measured with the present apparatus by attaching either the transmitting or receiving side of the apparatus to a part which is subjected to a load, and measuring the resulting change in the position of the light beam illuminating the light sensitive, position sensing device.

A clamping device for setting a detail which has at least one oversized throughbore to a fixture base which has at least one threaded throughbore, the clamping device has six degrees of freedom, a longitudinally adjustable body portion which has an upper threaded portion and a lower threaded portion and is fixed in space so as to form a firm point for longitudinal rotation eliminating bending of the body portion during the setting, a flange disposed on the body portion which separates the upper threaded portion from the lower threaded portion, and a clamping arrangement disposed on the upper threaded portion of the body portion which provides single load line jacking and clamping to adjust and hold the detail in position with relation to the fixture base so that lock-up of the clamping device and the detail is prevented.

A unitary targeting device is used to align a machined plane of a workpiece, for instance an industrial assembly fixture, with the optical axis of a reference instrument. The disclosed device and method are designed to fully utilize the depth of field of the reference instrument to sense misalignment in a single sighting.

A method for surveying is disclosed which functions to define all curves, grades and super elevations to a parabolic shape by impinging two laser beams, each of which is provided with a grid type means so as to create a diffracted fan of beams emitted from each laser. The intersections of these beams are utilized to form the parabolic shapes.

A system and method of determining the angular displacement of one or more members is disclosed. A reference laser beam is diffracted, reflected and impacted upon a face of a display as a light pattern in which the pattern spacing is representative of a determinable angular displacement relative to a reference pattern.
