A photon source capable of emitting, for example, a single photon or a single pair of photons on demand. The photon source may include an excitation region where a single instance of a quantum system is excited using excitation energy. A Stimulated Raman Adiabatic Passage (STIRAP) technique can be used for exciting the quantum system to a desired energy level. The photon source may include a photon emission region physically displaced from the excitation region. A transport device can be used for controllably moving an excited quantum system from the excitation region to the photon emission region. The photon emission region may include a resonant cavity tuned to the de-excitation frequency of the quantum system for inducing de-excitation of the quantum system and emission of a photon. The photon emission resonant cavity may be switchably coupled to an output port by a tunable resonant cavity coupling device.

Single photon source

A retaining apparatus that is attached to a toe portion of a shoelace section of a laced shoe for securing loops and loose ends of a shoelace. The apparatus is fabricated of a substrate having an engagement surface and an external surface. The substrate is apportioned via a lateral midline into a fixed securing section and a free securing section. The fixed section includes a fastening configuration for securing the apparatus to the shoe. The fastening configuration can be an elongated tubular structure, a pair of loops, an attachment strap, or other fastening configuration. A first coupling interface portion is disposed upon the engagement surface of the fixed securing section and a mating coupling interface portion is disposed upon the engagement surface of the free securing section. The coupling interface engages the free section with the fixed section entrapping the loop and free ends of the shoelace.

Shoelace retaining apparatus

A pill dispenser is provided for removing a pill from a blister pack having one or more foil sealed compartments in a plastic sheet, each containing a single pill. The pill dispenser includes a generally planar stage in generally horizontal orientation, a press assembly and a post. An opening is provided in the stage. The post extends upward, from the stage and the press assembly is rotatably coupled to the post. The press assembly includes a punch, configured such that the press assembly may be rotated to advance the punch through the opening. The blister pack may be loaded on the stage, with a compartment aligned with the opening and the foil adjacent to the stage. The press assembly may be operated to collapse the compartment, rupture the foil, and force the pill through the opening. A tray may be provided below the stage, for catching the pill.

Pill dispenser

A driving apparatus is disclosed for planting a vertically oriented shaft into a granular base. The driving apparatus includes an anvil integrally formed at an intermediate location on the shaft. A weight is attached on the shaft, above the anvil, in freely slidable engagement. The shaft is provided with a tapered lower end. With the lower end positioned adjacent to the granular base, the weights may be repeatedly propelled against the anvil, by sliding along the shaft in a hammering motion, to drive the shaft into the base. The shaft may serve to support an article such as a beach umbrella.

Driving apparatus for planting a shaft in a granular base

A device and method for angularly indexing an object (e.g., a mirror) relative to another at predetermined angles is provided. A rotatable mirror mount has the mirror mounted to a first element that rotates about an axis relative to an intermediate element. The intermediate element itself rotates about the same axis relative to a second element. The first and intermediate elements are formed with detents for establishing desired relative orientations at predetermined angles. The intermediate element can be locked at any position relative to the second element. When the intermediate element is locked, the first element remains rotatable with respect to the intermediate element and is restrained at desired relative orientations by the detents.

Apparatus for establishing predetermined positions of one element

A device and method to align the wheels of motor vehicles. A beam of collimated light from a low power visible laser is split into two generally parallel beams by a partially transmitting mirror and a series of plane front surface mirrors positioned in front and along side the vehicle being serviced. The two beams are reflected from a set of plane mirrors attached to the rims of the wheels to be aligned. The vertical and horizontal angles of each of the wheel-mounted mirrors are set by calibrated lead-screws to cancel the angular displacement of the wheels expected when the wheels are properly aligned. The reflected beams are imaged through a large aperture beam combiner on a common viewing screen. Correct toe-in and camber settings are indicated when the laser beams reflected from the wheel-mounted mirrors overlap at the center of the viewing screen. The caster settings of the front wheels are measured by observing the angle at which the reflected spots travel across the screen when the steering wheel is turned. The system can be used to align the front wheels only, or alternatively all four wheels simultaneously.

Laser-based wheel alignment system

The present invention provides in a Free electron laser a means to increase the temporal resolution of the optical pulses while simultaneously increasing the spectral resolution of the pulse train. The increase in temporal resolution is achieved by introducing a quadratic temporal phase variation (i.e. linear frequency chirping) across the pulses, and then propagating the outcoupled pulses through a dispersive relay line to compress them to the transform limit of the broadened spectrum.

Free-electron laser oscillator for simultaneous narrow spectral

A device and method to align the wheels of motor vehicles. The performance of free electron lasers can be greatly enhanced by including a non-linear optical element within the resonator for the oscillator. A system is described to enhance the peak or average power output of the FEL oscillator, or to modify the time structure of the oscillator output through the use of a non-linear element which modulates or diverts a portion of the optical wave circulating in the resonator.

Non-linear intractivity optical devices for free electron lasers

A technique for the simultaneous measurement, in real time, of the changes in mode size, pulse length, and power of a wavetrain of laser pulses delivered by mode-locked or other pulsed laser systems contemplates directing respective portions of the beam along each of three beam paths. The beam portions along the first and second beam paths are subjected to respective, and different, degrees of focusing, and then passed through respective non-linear elements which generate radiation at the second harmonic. The first harmonic components are removed, and the second harmonic components are passed to respective first and second detectors which generate signals representative of the total second harmonic energy along each of the first and second beam paths. The beam portion along the third beam path is passed to a detector which generates a signal representative of the total energy in the beam pulse. The three signals are combined to give values proportional to peak power, pulse length, and mode size.

Real time analyzer for pulsed laser systems

The invention envisages control devices acting on the laser to vary in time the electron/photon interaction, means proceeding to a State I in which they alter the optimal conditions for laser amplification; and a State II in which that reestablish said optimal conditions, which control devices permit the improvement of the peak amplitude and stability of the laser pulses and the rate and stability of the pulse period. According to another aspect of this invention, the two states are alternated, preferably periodically or almost periodically. The duration of State I should be selected by comparison with the characteristics of the electron packet and, in particular of the relaxation time observed for said packet. If the duration of State II is set to a value to be comparable to or longer than the electron relaxation time, the peak amplitude of the laser pulses is increased. The duration of State II should be selected by comparison with the natural macropulse width. If the duration of the State II is set to a value shorter than the natural duration of the laser macropulses, the repetition rate of the laser pulses can be increased.

Free electron laser

An electron gun (10) that suppresses the non-linear space charge forces and phase-dependant focusing forces that are chiefly responsible for the high emittance of conventional electron guns. The gun comprises a resonant microwave cavity (15), a cathode (12) mounted in the cavity wall, and a momentum analyzer system (17). The resonant microwave cavity, when supplied with microwave power, supports an electromagnetic field having a high-gradient electric component directed along an acceleration axis. The cavity is formed with an exit aperture (32) at a location relative to the cathode such that emitted electrons are accelerated along the axis and pass through the exit aperture. The cavity length is chosen to allow the microwave field within the cavity volume to accelerate the electrons to an energy of about 0.5-1.0 MeV prior to the electrons' passing through the aperture. Bunching is provided by the momentum analyzer. An electron emerging from the cavity has an energy determined by the phase of the microwave field at the time of that electron's emission. Those electrons having energies corresponding to the desired initial phase value are permitted to pass through the momentum analyzer, thereby forming a prebunched electron beam for injection into a linear accelerator.

Microwave electron gun

A storage-ring free-electron laser in which the electrons remain trapped in the optical potential wells formed by the laser fields. This is accomplished by preserving the electrons' bunched structure from pass to pass.

Isochronous free electron laser

A gain-expanded free electron laser in which a relativistic electron beam exchanges energy with an electromagnetic wave in an interaction region defined by a magnet system is configured to suppress betatron excitation. The magnet system, the electromagnetic wave, and electron beam are characterized by a net optical phase slip qL during the interaction between the phase of the electromagnetic wave and the phase of the electron transverse velocity, and a net betatron phase advance .LAMBDA.L. The optical phase slip and the betatron phase advance are chosen to satisfy the following constraints
