A method includes providing an exhaust stream for an internal combustion engine, where the exhaust stream is fluidly coupled to an aftertreatment component. The method includes optically determining an amount of an exhaust gas constituent in the exhaust stream. The method further includes modifying a model stored on a computer readable medium in response to the amount of the exhaust gas constituent. The model is an engine NOgeneration model, a catalyst NOstorage model, a catalyst NOconversion model, a catalyst NO to NOconversion model, a catalyst conversion efficiency model, an engine soot generation model, and/or a urea hydrolysis model.

Apparatus, system, and method for aftertreatment control and diagnostics

A system for detecting engine fluid constituents includes an engine having a sample channel having a conduit for a working engine fluid. The system includes an electromagnetic (EM) source that emits EM radiation through a first metal tube, where the EM radiation is EM energy at a wavelength of interest. The system further includes an EM detector that receives a remainder radiation through a second metal tube, the remainder radiation including the remaining EM radiation after passing through the sample channel. The system includes a controller that determines a composition indicator signal representative of an amount of a constituent in the working engine fluid in response to a strength of the remainder radiation, and determines a concentration of a component of interest according to the composition indicator signal.

EGR apparatuses, systems, and methods

A preferred embodiment EGR valve permits exhaust gas to be induced into the intake line downstream of the compressor, while minimizing the need to reduce the size of the turbocharger. The preferred embodiment EGR valve exploits variations around the mean pressure in the EGR passage created by the engine cycle by selectively opening when the pressure in the EGR valve exceeds the pressure in the intake line. Thus, exhaust gas is recirculated even when the engine is running near torque peak. The preferred embodiment EGR valve also exploits the higher mean pressure in the exhaust line relative to the intake line at higher engine speeds by remaining open, in order to minimize the energy consumed in opening and closing the EGR valve.

Dual mode EGR valve

An EGR valve position control system includes an EGR valve manager responsive to an EGR valve command to drive an EGR valve actuator. The EGR valve manager is operable to schedule control gains as a function of valve actuation direction to provide for faster response during valve closing events. Valve closing events are also staged such that a large valve position step is followed by a steady ramp to the valve closed position to thereby prevent damage to the valve and/or valve seat. The EGR valve manager further includes a prioritized switching feature for strategically switching between closed and open loop control modes, and a forward gain adjustment feature responsive to battery voltage to maintain constant system DC gain under changing battery voltage conditions.
