An antistatic polymer film having a coated surface that resists the formation of static. The antistatic coating on the film layer includes a polythiophene, a surfactant and water. The ratio of the surfactant to the polythiophene can be at least about 1:1 by weight of said coating. In addition, the coating can contain less than about 1 percent by weight of polymeric binder and can also contain less than about 1 percent by weight of organic solvent.

The present invention relates to a self-supporting polymer film with a silicone-containing coating layer on the front surface that is capable of releasing free silicone oil and a slip control coating on the back surface, where the slip control coating has an exposed surface adapted to contact the free silicone oil. The slip control coating includes water soluble copolyester; and optionally includes a coupler, preferably a silane. A method for controlling the slip of silicone coated film by coating the back side of the film with this slip control coating is also disclosed.

The present invention provides a coated polymer film having release properties. The film includes a self-supporting polymer film layer, and a release coating on the film layer. The release coating, which can also be applied to alternate substrates, includes a cross-linkable acrylic and a polyolefin wax. The coating can optionally include a polysiloxane in combination with one or both of the acrylic and polyolefin wax.

The present invention provides a coated polymer film having an essentially streak-free coated surface that resists the formation of fog. The film includes a self-supporting polymer film layer, and an anti-fog coating on the film layer. The anti-fog coating, which can also be applied to alternate substrates, consisting essentially of a copolyester binder and an anionic surfactant, wherein the surfactant contains less than about 0.5 weight percent of a fluorosurfactant. A slip agent can also be included in the anti-fog coating.

A method is provided for forming a strippable or dissolvable release coating on the surface of substrate such as a flexible polymeric film or web. The release coating is subsequently coated with a layer of material and then dissolved in a solvent to release the layer. The release coating is made from a copolymer of methylmethacrylate and ethylacrylate or from a homopolymer of polyacrylic acid. Release coatings made of methylmethacrylate and ethylacrylate copolymers having glass transition temperatures of about 60.degree. C. or greater, or made of a ipolyacrylic acid homopolymer having a glass transition temperature of about 100.degree. C. or higher, are also provided. The release coatings provide excellent supporting substrates for the formation of an overcoated metallized layer, are readily strippable in acetone, and can be formed during an in-line process which begins with drawing a flexible film or web from a molten polymeric material. Methods are also provided for making metallized layers used in the production of optically variable flakes and devices.

A method is provided for forming a dissolvable or strippable polymeric release coating on the surface of flexible web, forming an overcoated metallized or optically variable layer on said release coating, and stripping or dissolving the release coating to release the overcoated layer. The release coating comprises a polymer of crotonic acid which is soluble in a solvent such as acetone. The polymer may be a copolymer of crotonic acid and at least one vinyl ester such as vinyl acetate. The release coating may be formed during an in-line process which begins with drawing the flexible web from a molten polymeric material. The methods are particularly advantageous for forming optically variable flakes and multilayered optically variable devices.

The present invention discloses a subbing coating composition for polyester films comprising:

A polyester film coated with a novel primer coating and overcoated with one or more gelatin-aziridine coatings makes an excellent photographic film. The primer coating has about 85-90% by weight of a water-dispersible copolyester and about 1-15% by weight of an anionic surfactant. The water-dispersible copolyester contains about 80-98 mol % of at least one dicarboxylic acid or its ester equivalent; about 1-20 mol % of a sulfomonomer containing a sulfonate group attached to a dicarboxylic nucleus; and about 100 mol % of at least one glycol having 2-11 carbon atoms. The gelatin-aziridine coating contains about 0.5 to 100% by weight of aziridine, based on the weight of the gelatin. The gelatin-aziridine coating is sufficient to provide adhesion to or serve as a photographic gelatin coating and the aziridine being sufficient to bond the gelatin to the primed film. The gelatin-aziridine coating may constitute a single uniformly blended layer, or separate layers of gelatin and of aziridine with each layer diffused into the other. A process for producing a film useful as a photographic substrate is also disclosed.

A polyester film coated with a novel primer coating and overcoated with one or more gelatin-aziridine coatings makes an excellent photographic film as well as for other suitable purposes like reprographic film, x-ray film, etc. The primer coating has about 85-90% by weight of a water-dispersible copolyester and about 1-15% by weight of an anionic surfactant. The water-dispersible copolyester contains about 80-98 mol % of at least one dicarboxylic acid or its ester equivalent; about 1-20 mol % of a sulfomonomer containing a sulfonate group attached to a dicarboxylic nucleus; and about 100 mol % of at least one glycol having 2-11 carbon atoms. The gelatin-aziridine coating contains about 0.5 to 100% by weight of aziridine, based on the weight of the gelatin. The gelatin-aziridine coating is sufficient to provide adhesion to or serve as a photographic gelatin coating and the aziridine being sufficient to bond the gelatin to the primed film. The gelatin-aziridine coating may constitute a single uniformly blended layer, or separate layers of gelatin and of aziridine with each layer diffused into the other. A process for producing a film useful as a photographic substrate is also disclosed.

A polyester film having a nodule surface is disclosed. The acrylic coating is preferably a crosslinked composition having a relatively high methyl methacrylate content and specific surfactants. The acrylic coating composition is applied as an aqueous dispersion to polyester film, preferably after corona treatment of the polyester film. The nodule surface reduces the coefficient of friction of the polyester film. The coating composition comprises from 60 to 90 mole percent methyl methacrylate; from 10 to 35 mole percent of at least one modifier selected from the group of ethyl acrylate, propyl acrylate, butyl acrylate, and mixtures of these; and from 3 to 10 mole percent of a crosslinkable monomer or a self-crosslinking monomer selected from the group of N-methylol methacrylamide, N-methylol acrylamide, acrylamide, methacrylamide, and mixtures of these; with from 2 to 15 weight percent of the nonionic surfactant and at least 0.1 percent by weight of the anionic surfactant.
