A method of significantly improving the brightness and shade properties of a high quality PCC product. The method includes providing a calcium containing feed source that contains discoloring impurities. The calcium containing feed source is formed into an aqueous slurry of calcium carbonate. Thereafter, the slurry is fine screened through a 325 mesh screen in order to yield a slurry of filler grade calcium carbonate. The filler grade calcium carbonate slurry is wet milled in order to liberate the discoloring impurities and reduce the median particle size of the calcium carbonate to less than 2 microns. The discoloring impurities are then magnetically separated from the milled calcium carbonate slurry by subjecting the slurry to a high intensity magnetic filed. After the magnetic separation step, the purified slurry may be de-watered to yield a dry powder; or alternatively, the slurry may be retained in aqueous form. In any event, the resultant calcium carbonate product has a median particle size of less than 2 microns and a TAPPI brightness of greater than 96.

A coarse particle kaolin clay is provided having an average Stokes equivalent particle diameter of about 4.5-6.0 microns, a BET surface area of about 8-11 m.sup.2 /g, and preferably having a median Malvern particle size of about 9.0-10.5 microns as determined by laser light-scattering measurement and a high aspect ratio preferably of about 12-14 as determined by Sphericity Model calculations. The coarse particle kaolin clay provides low viscosity build, good reinforcement properties and excellent surface finish qualities as a filler in thermoset composite materials, such as polyester molding compounds, and also provides excellent pigmenting properties in paints and industrial coatings. Preparation of the coarse particle clay involves blunging and degritting a crude kaolin clay, conducting three separate centrifugation steps with the desired product stream being, in sequence, the coarse underflow clay from the primary centrifuge, the coarse underflow from the secondary centrifuge, and then the fine overflow from the tertiary centrifuge, followed by magnetic separation, screening, chemical leaching, drying and milling to produce a kaolin clay product having the above-described physical properties and performance characteristics.

Automatic toll processing apparatus

A flotation chamber separates fine kaolin particles or the like by flotation out of a slurry. A generally cylindrical column has an inlet for injecting slurry into the column, a froth launder at an upper end of the column, and a tailings outlet at the lower end of the column. A draft tube is vertically oriented within the column and has upper and lower open ends. A sparger within the draft tube injects air into the slurry within the draft tube, and a rotary impeller immediately above the top end of the draft tube produces a fine bubble in the slurry and permits quiescent zones in the slurry above and below the position of the impeller. Aeration of the slurry supplied to the impeller lowers power draw.

A system is disclosed which may readily be added to an existing system of phones and electrical outlets. It includes circuitry that, responsive to sensing of a condition, seizes a telephone line, dials a single digit and introduces a preferably beeping signal into the line to warn the switchboard operator of the sensed condition. The system repeats the cycle until the sensed condition ceases.
