A disk antenna for use in a PCMCIA card or the like having a disk made from conventional moldable plastics and a radiating element that has a low capacitive impedance relative the inductance of the antenna feed such that the tuning element is capacitive. The disk antenna maximizes the ratio of bandwidth to disk size by maximizing the surface area of the radiating element. The antenna is application specific in that it can be adapted for various environmental resonant variations.

Disk antenna

In one preferred embodiment, a dual band antenna having a radiating element which includes: a one-quarter PCS wavelength radiating portion which serves as a base; a one-half PCS wavelength radiating portion; a PCS phasing coil joining the one-quarter PCS wavelength radiating portion to the one-half PCS wavelength radiating portion, wherein the PCS phasing coil substantially allows energy in the AMPS band to pass therethrough; a one-half AMPS wavelength radiating portion; and an AMPS phasing coil joining the one-half AMPS wavelength radiating portion to the one-half PCS wavelength radiating portion, wherein the AMPS phasing coil substantially prevents energy in the PCS band from passing therethrough, and wherein the AMPS phasing coil provides a 180 degree phase shift for energy in the AMPS band. Thus, the one-quarter PCS and the one-half PCS wavelength radiating portions together behave as a one-quarter wavelength radiating sub-element for energy in the AMPS band, and the radiating element behaves as a one-half wavelength over one-quarter wavelength radiating element in the AMPS band. Furthermore, the one-half AMPS wavelength radiating portion is substantially inactive in the PCS band, such that the one-half PCS and the one-quarter PCS wavelength radiating portions behave as a one-half wavelength over one-quarter wavelength radiating element in the PCS band.

Dual band antenna

A communication system for transferring data through the air over a relatively short fixed distance comprising a transmitting antenna which comprises a leaky coaxial cable for radiating electromagnetic energy modulated with data to be transferred; and a plurality of non-linear fixed beam array antennas for receiving the modulated electromagnetic energy from the leaky coaxial cable. The plurality of fixed beam array antennas are juxtaposed with the transmitting antenna such that the transmitting antenna extends at least partially through the near-field regions of the plurality of fixed beam array antennas. The communication system also comprises a selection means which determines which radio frequency output from the plurality of non-linear fixed beam array antennas exhibits the greatest radio frequency power and outputs that particular radio frequency output to a receiver. Also described is a method of increasing the performance of an antenna system, which comprises the steps of inputting radio frequency signals from a plurality of antennas, selecting that radio frequency signal which comprises the greatest radio frequency power, and outputting the radio frequency signal comprising the greatest radio frequency power.

Dual near-field focused antenna array

An apparatus and method for exciting an antenna with dual frequency bands which comprises feeding a first channel of the antenna with a first signal in the VHF band such that a first current is established in a first direction resulting in a first polarization, feeding a second channel of the antenna with a second signal such that a second current is established in a second direction resulting in a second polarization, and isolating characteristics of the first channel from characteristics of the second channel and the characteristics of the second channel from the characteristics of the first channel such that both the first channel and the second channel are adapted to transmit and receive energy within the same antenna structure without appreciable coupling between the first channel and the second channel.

Method and apparatus for a dual frequency band antenna

A composite antenna comprising a first and second antenna suitable for transceiving independent signals in the cellular communication and GPS bands. The first antenna has upper and lower electrically conductive discs of substantially the same size aligned substantially in parallel, a first means for application of a first electrical signal between and at substantially geometric centers of the discs, and a plurality of electrically conductive shunts. The second (GPS) antenna is attached atop the upper electrically conductive disc and has a second means for application of a second electrical signal to the GPS antenna which traverses the electrically conductive discs whereby there is no significant degradation in performance of either the first cellular antenna or the second GPS antenna. The shunts are electrically connected to the first electrically conductive disc and the second electrically conductive disc, whereby the first and second electrically conductive discs are spaced from each other by a volume of free space or a volume occupied by a dielectric material. Also described is an antenna for cellular communications alone, with first and second electrically conductive discs spaced from each other by a volume of free space or a volume occupied by a dielectric material, without the second GPS antenna.

Composite antenna for cellular and gps communications

A communication system for transferring data through the air over a relatively short fixed distance comprises a transmitting antenna comprising a leaky coaxial cable for radiating electromagnetic energy modulated with data to be transferred; and a non-linear fixed beam array antenna for receiving the modulated electromagnetic energy from the leaky coaxial cable. The fixed beam array antenna is juxtaposed with the transmitting antenna such that said transmitting antenna extends at least partially through the near-field region of the fixed beam array antenna. The fixed beam array antenna comprises four conductive patch elements comprising two inner patch elements and two outer patch elements juxtaposed linearly on a substantially flat substrate, wherein each of the patch elements is arranged to transduce electromagnetic energy with corresponding electric signals. The antenna also comprises means for shifting the phase of the signals obtained from each of the two inner patch elements by an amount substantially equivalent to the difference between the time the electromagnetic beam is incident upon each inner element and the time the electromagnetic beam is incident upon each outer element; and signal adding means for coherently adding the phase-shifted signals from each inner element and the non-phase-shifted signals from each outer element.

Near-field focused antenna

A planar patch array antenna for satellite communications. The antenna includes a planar patch array and a dual axis positioner for rotating the array about azimuth and elevation axes. The dual axis positioner is unique in that it consists of a plurality of individual modules which can be easily assembled and disassembled. The positioner consists of the following modules: a fixed pedestal, an azimuth drive module, an azimuth rotary module, an RF/slip ring module, an elevation drive module, an antenna support and an electronic module. According to the invention, the pedestal remains fixed and the azimuth drive module is received in a recess defined by the pedestal. The azimuth rotary module is rotatably supported on the pedestal and is driven by the azimuth drive module so that it rotates about the vertical or azimuth axis. The elevation drive module is fixed to the rotary drive module and rotatably supports the antenna support module. The elevation drive module includes a drive mechanism for causing the antenna support module and, attendantly, the antenna array secured thereto, to rotate about the elevation axis. Finally, the RF/slip ring module is provided within the elevation drive module for supplying RF power to the antenna array and for supplying DC power to the elevation drive module.
