An apparatus and method for multi-mode fuel injection is disclosed. A sleeve is disposed about a fuel injector tip movable between a first and second position and wherein the sleeve is capable of impinging the fuel spray as it enters into the combustion chamber. By impinging the fuel spray, different spray profiles or plumes can be obtained allowing the fuel injector to inject in different modes, including homogenous charge compression ignition.

The present invention relates generally to the field of homogeneous charge compression engines. In these engines, fuel is injected upstream or directly into the cylinder when the power piston is relatively close to its bottom dead center position. The fuel mixes with air in the cylinder as the power piston advances to create a relatively lean homogeneous mixture that preferably ignites when the power piston is relatively close to the top dead center position. However, if the ignition event occurs either earlier or later than desired, lowered performance, engine misfire, or even engine damage, can result. Thus, the present invention divides the homogeneous charge between a controlled volume higher compression space and a lower compression space to better control the start of ignition.

A two stroke homogenous charge compression ignition engine includes a volume pulsed air supplier, such as a piston driven pump, for efficient scavenging. The usage of a homogenous charge tends to decrease emissions. The use of a volume pulsed air supplier in conjunction with conventional poppet type intake and exhaust valves results in a relatively efficient scavenging mode for the engine. The engine preferably includes features that permit valving event timing, air pulse event timing and injection event timing to be varied relative to engine crankshaft angle. The principle use of the invention lies in improving diesel engines.

Internal combustion engines have been developed having regeneration mechanisms for increasing efficiency and reducing emissions. Previous regeneration mechanisms have been complicated and costly. The present invention provides a simple regeneration member which is attached within a piston assembly. Thus the apparatus for attaching the regeneration member within the internal combustion engine greatly reduces the cost of the engine.

An exhaust gas recirculation system for use with an internal combustion engine comprising a heat exchanger, a first turbocharger, and a generator. The first turbocharger provides compressed fresh air to an intake manifold. The heat exchanger cools the exhaust gas for recirculation into the intake manifold. The generator provides turbocharger control by imparting stored energy back into the turbocharger. Turbocharger control allows the exhaust gas recirculation system to operate more efficiently and over a wide range of operating conditions.

Most internal combustion engines may be optimized for either power or efficiency. A dual mode internal combustion engine may operate in either a power mode or an efficient mode. The dual mode internal combustion engine has two four-cycle combustion chambers and a two-cycle compression/expansion chamber. The valve system is set up to introduce a fluid charge into the compression/expansion cylinder during the power mode. The fluid charge is compressed in the compression/expansion chamber and one of the combustion chambers. During the efficiency mode, the fluid charge is expanded first in one of the combustion chambers and further expanded in the compression/expansion chamber.

A thermal regenerator used on an internal combustion engine normally absorbs heat from expanded hot combustion gases when moved in one direction and transfers the absorbed heat to the compressed intake air when moved through the air in an opposite direction. In order to improve efficiency of the thermal regenerator, finely dispersed cooling liquid is added into the intake air to cool the intake air to a lower temperature before the thermal regenerator transfers the absorbed heat. When compressing a mixture of finely dispersed cooling liquid in the intake air, the vaporization of the cooling liquid reduces compression work and the resultant temperature. The reduced compression temperature allows more heat to be extracted from the exhaust, raises the effectiveness of the regenerator and the efficiency of the engine.
