A mold assembly including moveable mold parts, one of which includes a plurality of hollow cavities. Each hollow cavity forms an outer wall of an elongated, generally annular portion of a molded part and the other mold part includes a corresponding plurality of core elements, which form an inner wall of the same portion of the molded part. Each core is disposed within a corresponding cavity to define a generally annular mold chamber portion for receiving molten material to be molded to form the shape of the portion of the molded part. Each core element includes a cooling apparatus and each cavity includes an outside cavity-cooling device. Each core element includes a first portion made of high strength material and a tip portion made of material having a greater heat diffusivity and heat transfer coefficient than said first portion.

A mold assembly has a mold part with a plurality of elongated cavities therein forming the outer wall of a molded part and wherein a fluid cooled core is inserted within each of the elongated cavities having an outer surface forming the inner wall of the molded part and the fluid cooled core includes an inner surface having a plurality of circumferentially spaced, longitudinally directed ribs for reinforcing the fluid cooled core radially inwardly of the elongated cavities and along the length of said fluid cooled core to control core deflection. A fluid inlet pipe is located axially of the inner surface in spaced relationship thereto having one end thereof adapted to be connected to a source of coolant and including a second end thereon in communication with a plurality of circumferentially spaced passages formed between each of the longitudinally directed ribs and wherein each of the passages returns flow to an elongated annular passage between the fluid inlet pipe and the inner surface.

High thermal capacity mold assembly

An electrical discharge machine including a pick-and-place system for transferring electrode refeed cartridges from a storage turret to an EDM work station from either one or two indexable turrets. A plurality of equally spaced electrode cartridge assemblies are each removably mounted on each turret by magnets and guide pins. A slide assembly is vertically positioned between a cartridge assembly load and unload elevation and an EDM work station elevation. The slide assembly includes a movable connector plug assembly selectively driven by an EDM cylinder fixed on the slide assembly. The connector plug assembly supplies refeed cylinders on a slide mounted cartridge assembly and vertically reciprocates a power connector receptacle and drive head on such cartridge assembly. The receptacle and drive head include an electrode guide board guiding one or more electrodes with respect to a workpiece. The slide-mounted, fixed EDM cylinder moves the drive head to position such electrodes toward and away from the workpieces to spark erode desired openings therein. The connector plug assembly and receptacle cooperate to disconnect and connect the respective electrode cartridge assemblies with respect to the drive unit and with respect to a source of air and electricity operative to sense when the respective electrodes become worn and to refeed electrodes to compensate for electrode wear.

Electrical discharge machining apparatus with exchangeable electrode

A wire guide directs a wire electrode from a refeed mechanism in an electrical discharge machine EDM to a workpiece. The wire guide has ceramic inserts defining a precision guide slot for the electrode and wherein one of the inserts is carried by a deflectable member spring biased to damp the electrode so as to maintain concentricity of holes formed by the electrode and thereby closely control the hole diameter.

Apparatus and method for finishing fuel injector spray tips using EDM

A steady rest follower for a workpiece comprising a frame supporting a slide which is movable in directions toward and away from the workpiece. A pair of vertically spaced support wheels are mounted on the slide for engagement with the workpiece. A pair of springs yieldably urge the slide rearwardly away from the workpiece and into engagement with the peripheral surface of an eccentrically configured roller member that is mounted on the frame. During the machining of the workpiece, the eccentric roller member is rotated to move the slide against the pressure of the springs toward the workpiece so that the support roller members are maintained in continuous engagement with the workpiece as the size of the workpiece is reduced.

Two-point contact steady rest follower

Electrical discharge machining apparatus in which a plurality of generally parallel electrodes are moved during machining and during refeed in generally parallel paths. A drive roller assembly is provided for refeeding the electrodes after each machining cycle to compensate for erosion of the electrodes that occurred during the preceding machining cycle. The drive roller assembly consists of a plurality of rollers arranged on opposite sides of the electrodes so that the electrodes are drivingly engaged between the rollers. The apparatus is further equipped with a movable gage member having an electrode engaging surface. After each machining cycle, the gage member is moved to a predetermined position between the location of the workpiece and the electrodes. The electrodes are refed into engagement with the electrode engaging surface which defines a reference surface between the workpiece and the electrodes. Refeed of the electrodes is terminated when the electrodes engage the gage member. After refeed is completed, the gage member is retracted and the machining cycle is initiated.

Electrode positioning gage for multiple electrode electrical discharge

Electrical discharge machining apparatus in which a plurality of generally parallel electrodes are moved during machining and during refeed in generally parallel paths. A drive roller assembly is provided for refeeding the electrodes after each machining cycle to compensate for erosion of the electrodes that occurred during the preceding machining cycle. The drive roller assembly consists of a plurality of rollers arranged on opposite sides of the electrodes so that the electrodes are drivingly engaged between the rollers. In one embodiment of the invention, the rollers slip on the electrodes after the electrodes have been moved to positions engaging the work until all of the electrodes have been moved into engagement with the work. In another embodiment of the invention, each electrode is independently driven and engagement of each electrode with the work is electrically sensed and in response to such sensing, the drive for that electrode is discontinued. In all cases, the drive roller assembly for refeeding the electrodes is deactivated during machining and the electrodes are firmly clamped against the carriage on which the drive roller assembly is supported.
