A homogenizer includes a homogenizing valve assembly mounted to a pump block. A set of one or more pump chambers is formed in the block and a plunger is positioned in each chamber. Each pump chamber is formed along a substantially horizontal pump axis and extends through the pump block. A removable check valve module comprising a suction valve assembly and a discharge valve assembly is positioned in a bore which intersects each pump chamber. Each valve module is secured in the bore by a retaining pin such that the module can be easily and quickly removed as a single unit.

A homogenizer comprises a homogenizing valve mounted to a pump block. The homogenizing valve includes a valve seat and a valve member positioned adjacent to the valve seat forming a gap through which fluid is expressed during homogenization. The homogenizer also comprises magnetostrictive actuator assembly which maintains a process pressure by controlling the size of the gap. The actuator assembly includes a magnetostrictive member which is coupled to the valve member and a generator for applying a magnetic field to the magnetostrictive member. The presence of the magnetic field produces magnetostriction of the magnetostrictive member which causes actuation of the valve member, thereby adjusting the size of the gap.

A homogenizer comprises a homogenizing valve mounted to a pump block. Sets of three suction valves and discharge valves are positioned in valve bores in opposite faces of the block. Each of the valve bores has a hemispherical termination. The hemispherical termination of a pump chamber is formed in an adjacent surface of the block and is in communication with the valve bores through oblique conduits. The pump cylinder is formed in a packing box mounted in the block by bolts extending through the block. Integral valve assemblies removable as units are positioned in the valve bores. A pressure sensor is coupled to a discharge manifold through an isolating piston.
