Methods and systems of emitting different light from a multiple mode light emitting device are disclosed. An exemplary embodiment has a LED portion with a plurality of first LEDs and a plurality of second LEDs arranged in a first ring centered about a central axis, and a rotatable portion with a plurality of light conditioning elements arranged in a second ring centered about the central axis. The plurality of first LEDs emit and the plurality of second LEDs emit different types of light. Each light conditioning element receives and conditions light from one of the plurality of first LEDs when the light conditioning element is in a first position. Each light conditioning element receives and conditions light from one of the plurality of second LEDs when the light conditioning element is in a second position. The light conditioning elements may be reflector cups or may be lens.

Multiple mode light emitting device

A system and method for determining when a LED-based position light is nearing its end of life by providing to maintenance personnel visible indication that end of life is approaching. An example system includes a controller, a main LED light, an indicator LED light, a first elapsed time counter, a second elapsed time counter, and an oscillator. The first elapsed time counter recognizes when a first time threshold is exceeded, causing the indicator LED light to flash and triggering the second elapsed time counter to start counting. The second elapsed time counter recognizes when a second time threshold is exceeded, disabling both the indicator LED light and the main LED lights, thereby notifying maintenance personnel that the main LED lights have reached their end of life.

Near end-of-life indication for light emitting diode (LED) aircraft navigation light

An aircraft position light assembly having one or more light emitting diode (LED) modules. The LED module can be installed in a variety of aircraft wing-tip cavities. An example LED module includes a support device that mounts within an aircraft wingtip, a bracket device that attaches to the support device, at least one circuit board that mounts to the bracket, and two pairs of LEDs. Each pair of LEDs is mounted on opposing major surfaces at a first end of the circuit board. A first pair of reflectors is attached to the circuit board adjacent to two of the LEDs on the opposing major surfaces. A second pair of reflectors is attached to the circuit board adjacent to the other two LEDs on the opposing major surfaces.

Aircraft position light assembly

Aircraft anti-collision light (ACL) systems and methods are operable to emit light from light emitting diode (LED) lamps. An exemplary embodiment includes a housing, a plurality of LED lamps within the housing and configured to emit light in a direction substantially perpendicular to the direction of light emitted from the ACL, and a reflector within the housing that is configured to reflect the light received from the plurality of LED lamps in the direction of light emitted from the ACL.

Systems and methods for aircraft LED anti collision light

Pilot Director Lights (PDLs) mounted on the exterior of a refueling tanker aircraft utilize visible light emitting diodes (LEDs) and infrared LEDs as light sources to provide visual information to the pilot of an approaching aircraft The PDLs are switchable between a visible mode that uses the visible LEDs and a covert mode that uses the infrared LEDs. The PDLs may include a plurality of light emitting devices arranged in arrays, rows, or other patterns, each light emitting device being configured to illuminate a particular symbol/pattern in one example. Each light emitting device may include a plurality of modular banks of LEDs which are configured to emit light through a clear lens within a particular field of view. The PDL arrays may provide visual feedback regarding the elevational and fore-aft position of the approaching aircraft relative to the boom envelope of the tanker aircraft.

A white anti-collision light mounted on an aircraft utilizes a set of high-power light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and dedicated reflectors to distribute the light in a particular pattern that satisfies predetermined intensity requirements along a horizontal coverage area. The anti-collision light may include heat pipes for transferring heat from the LEDs to a set of cooling fins. Also, the LEDs may be electrically connected and controlled to provide redundancy and mitigate the effects of LED failures.
