On embodiment of the present invention sets forth a technique for automatically computing exposure parameters for a digital video camera (DVC) system. The exposure parameters include exposure gain, analog gain, and digital gain. Each frame is analyzed with respect to an image luma value. Exposure gain and analog gain are adjusted to reduce differences between a target image luma value and measured image luma values over sequential frames. Digital gain is adjusted with respect to each frame to reduce visually abrupt changes in sequentially captured video frames.

Various methods and apparatus to detect red eye in a digital image are described. In an embodiment, a method identifies one or more red eye candidate zones within an identified skin region in a digital image. A first red eye candidate zone includes connected regions of pixels of a different color in the digital image than their natural color and exceeds a minimum size. The first red eye candidate zone is determined to be an actual red eye by comparing a red eye candidate score to a detection threshold value.

A digital video camera may include a digital video image sensor for capturing digital video footage to be stored on an internal memory. Various methods, apparatuses, and systems in which a digital photography device includes a global shutter to control exposure time, a sensor array, and a flash illumination are described. The global shutter is in the optical path of light going to the sensor. The flash illumination generates a pulsed illumination. The shutter speed of the global shutter during a pre-flash illumination substantially matches the shutter speed during the flash illumination during the taking of a picture using the flash illumination based on the global shutter receiving a trigger signal from a controller.

In an embodiment, a method receives an input that identifies an actual red eye in a digital image and a red eye candidate score associated with the actual red eye. The red eye candidate score of the actual red eye exceeds a detection threshold value. The method corrects the coloration of the actual red eye with a level of correction based on the red eye candidate score.
